Docker packages your streaming chatbot; it does not make the app public by itself. To move from localhost to a live URL, you must run the app in a container, deploy that image to a reachable host or managed platform, configure routing and—if you manage the domain—DNS and HTTPS, then verify that responses still arrive incrementally through the complete network path.

What changes between localhost and a live URL?

There are three separate stages: the web server runs on your development machine; the same server runs inside a container; and a host or platform routes requests from the public internet to that container. A successful local container test proves the image can run locally. It does not establish public access, a domain name, or TLS.

The application must keep running as a web server and listen on the port expected by its deployment environment. In the tutorial’s described example, the local app uses port 3000. Treat that as the example’s port, not a requirement for every chatbot: use the port your application and chosen host are configured to use.

Make the app ready to run in a container

Keep the web server alive and reachable

Ensure the app starts its server as the container’s main process and binds to a network-reachable interface inside the container, rather than accepting connections only from its own loopback interface. The container’s listening port and the host or platform’s routing configuration must agree. A browser-visible interface alone is not enough; the server endpoint that produces the stream must also be reachable.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build an image without bundling local secrets

Add a Dockerfile that installs the app’s runtime dependencies and starts the web server, plus a .dockerignore that excludes local dependencies, generated files, and secret-bearing files such as .env. The exact-title tutorial’s search excerpt describes a Node.js app, a Dockerfile, and a .dockerignore; it does not establish the project’s package scripts or a verified Dockerfile, so adapt these files to your repository instead of copying an assumed one.

Do not put API keys or other credentials into the image with a Dockerfile ENV instruction or copy them into the build context. Supply them when the container runs, using the secret or environment-variable mechanism supported by your host.

Build and check the container locally

The tutorial excerpt gives this local pattern for its port-3000 example. Run it from the directory containing the Dockerfile and the environment file:

docker build -t streaming-chatbot .
docker run --rm -p 3000:3000 --env-file .env streaming-chatbot

The left side of -p is the host port and the right side is the port inside the container. Open http://localhost:3000 if those are the ports configured for this app. Keep .env out of the image and out of version control; an environment file is convenient for a local check, but use your deployment platform’s protected configuration for production secrets.

Check both the page and an actual chatbot response. A page loading successfully does not prove that the response stream works. Test the same interaction your users will perform and confirm that output appears progressively rather than only after the complete response is ready.

Choose a deployment route

Route What it provides What you still need to handle
Managed platform, such as Railway A provider-managed deployment path; Railway’s surfaced guide describes a streaming AI chatbot and a generated domain after deployment. Configure the app, environment variables, build or image settings, and port expectations for the provider. Confirm its current requirements in the provider’s documentation.
Self-managed remote Docker host Control over the server and its Docker deployment. Configure remote access, host ports, process restart behavior, logs, DNS for a custom domain, and HTTPS routing.

These routes are not directly comparable on cost or capacity from the available figures: no comparable price or scaling benchmark is established here. The practical distinction is operational responsibility. A managed service may provide a generated domain, while a self-managed host leaves server, routing, and domain configuration to you.

Deploy through a managed platform

Use the provider’s current deployment guide for its supported way to build or select the image, set runtime variables, and expose the application port. Railway’s guide is specifically relevant to a chatbot with streaming responses and describes a generated domain, but provider-specific UI labels and setup steps should be checked in its current documentation rather than assumed. After deployment, use the generated domain to test the app from outside your development machine.

Deploy to a remote Docker host

Docker documents using a remote Docker endpoint by setting DOCKER_HOST, DOCKER_TLS_VERIFY, and DOCKER_CERT_PATH before running regular Compose commands. Configure these for your host’s connection details and certificates; do not treat the example variable names as credentials or expose certificate material. Remote Docker access is separate from making the app publicly reachable: the server still needs an inbound route to the application, and a domain and HTTPS require their own configuration.

Set production behavior separately from development

Docker’s Compose guidance supports layering a production-specific file over the base Compose file, so the production differences need not replace the development setup. For example:

Depending on the application and host, a production override can remove source-code volume bindings, change host-port bindings and environment variables, set a restart policy, or add logging services. Those are options to evaluate, not universal required settings. In particular, a development source mount can make local editing convenient but may not be the desired way to run a deployed image.

Connect a public domain and HTTPS on a self-managed host

The container port is not the public URL. For a self-managed domain, create the appropriate DNS record pointing to the Docker server’s public address, then route incoming web traffic to the app through an HTTPS-capable reverse proxy. Rocket.Chat’s Docker deployment guide uses this general pattern and describes Traefik or Nginx for HTTPS termination; that example illustrates the roles of DNS and proxy, not a required stack for this chatbot.

Keep the responsibilities distinct: the app serves on its configured port, the host or proxy routes requests to that port, DNS directs the domain to the server, and the proxy handles HTTPS. Use the chosen proxy’s current documentation for secure TLS and routing configuration rather than publishing an unverified configuration snippet.

Verify streaming through the deployed route

Streaming is an end-to-end behavior: the browser, app server, platform, and any reverse proxy must allow incremental delivery. The described tutorial example reads response chunks in the browser with fetch; that is a streaming response pattern, not necessarily Server-Sent Events (SSE). Docker Agent’s documentation describes its own agent endpoints as SSE and demonstrates curl -N, but that does not mean every chatbot uses SSE. Test the protocol your app actually implements.

  • Open the deployed URL from a device or network outside the server and confirm the page and chat endpoint are reachable.
  • Send a prompt that produces a visible response, and watch whether output arrives progressively in the browser.
  • If the page works but output arrives only at the end, inspect the app’s response handling and each platform or proxy layer for behavior that buffers the response.
  • If the domain fails but a direct host route works, check DNS and the proxy or host routing configuration. If neither route works, check that the container is running, the app is listening on the expected interface and port, and the host exposes the intended service.

Do not expose a development or administrative API just because it is listening on a network interface. Docker Agent’s API-server documentation specifically warns that a network-reachable API server should use --auth-token and recommends constraining session working directories for multi-user or network-exposed deployments. Those are Docker Agent-specific cautions, not automatic requirements or authentication instructions for the Node.js chatbot described by the tutorial.

Redeploy after changing the code

For a Compose service named web, Docker’s production guidance gives this example to rebuild the image and recreate that service:

docker compose build web
docker compose up --no-deps -d web

Use the actual service name from your Compose file. After a redeploy, repeat the external browser and progressive-response checks: an updated container that starts correctly can still have a routing or streaming issue along the deployed path.
