To turn a picture upside down, rotate it 180° or use Flip Vertical. Don’t choose Flip Horizontal: that mirrors left and right rather than swapping the top and bottom. Use the photo app already on your device, then save or confirm the edit.
Choose the right operation
Use a 180° rotation or vertical flip when the top of the picture should become the bottom. Use a horizontal flip only when you want a left-to-right mirror image. If the picture is merely tilted, use a straighten or angle-rotation control instead of either flip.
- Upside down: rotate 180° or flip vertically.
- Mirror image: flip horizontally.
- Correct a tilt: straighten or rotate by a small angle.
Turn a picture upside down in Windows Photos
- Open the picture in Photos and choose Edit image. Microsoft lists Ctrl+E as a shortcut for entering editing.
- Open the crop and rotation controls. Choose a 180° turn or use the vertical-flip control to exchange the top and bottom.
- Review the result and keep the edit, or use Reset to cancel your changes.
Photos also has horizontal flip and free-rotation controls, so check that you have selected the vertical operation or a half-turn. Microsoft’s instructions for still photos do not establish one universal save-copy workflow; its explicit Save as Copy direction is for video edits. Microsoft’s Windows Photos guide describes the available editing controls.
Turn a picture upside down on iPhone
- Open the photo in the Photos app and tap Edit.
- Tap Crop, then tap the rotate control twice. Each tap rotates the photo 90°, for a total of 180°.
- Tap Done to keep the edit. To abandon it, tap Cancel and discard the changes.
The separate Flip control mirrors the photo horizontally; it is not the control for turning it upside down. See Apple’s iPhone photo editing instructions.

Turn a picture upside down in Mac Photos
- Open the photo’s crop tools.
- Hold Option while clicking Flip. A regular click flips horizontally; Option-click changes the flip to vertical.
- Use Reset to clear crop and straightening changes, or choose Revert to Original or Revert if you do not want to keep the edit.

Turn a picture upside down in Photoshop
- Decide whether the change should affect the entire image, a layer, or a selection, and select the intended target.
- Choose Edit > Transform > Rotate 180° for a half-turn, or choose Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical for a vertical inversion.
- Check the result and save it using the workflow appropriate to your project.
Flip Horizontal mirrors left and right. Photoshop’s transform commands can apply to an image, layer, or selection, so selecting the correct scope matters. See Adobe’s instructions for rotating and flipping images in Photoshop.

Turn a picture upside down in GIMP 3.0
- For the entire image, choose Image > Transform > Flip Vertically.
- For a left-to-right mirror, choose Image > Transform > Flip Horizontally.
- If the change should affect only a layer or selection, use the Flip Tool or the appropriate layer-transform controls instead of the whole-image command.
GIMP’s documented menu commands affect the whole image; the Flip Tool supports more targeted work. See the GIMP 3.0 manual.
Flip a picture inside Word, PowerPoint, or another Office document
- Select the picture or other object in the document.
- Open the Format tab and its Arrange or Rotate controls.
- Choose Flip Vertical to turn it upside down. Choose Flip Horizontal only for a mirror image.
This changes the picture object in the document, not necessarily the source photo file. Microsoft notes that text inside a flipped object may not reverse with it; some Office apps provide a separate 3-D rotation adjustment for that situation. See Microsoft’s Office object rotation and flip guide.

Pick the simplest suitable method

Check the saved result
Before closing the editor, confirm that the picture is upside down rather than mirrored and that you edited the intended image, layer, selection, or document object. Use the app’s save or confirmation control to keep the change. If you do not want it, use the available cancel, reset, or revert command; the exact save and undo behavior varies by app.
