cpuunits (sometimes written cpu.units) is Proxmox’s relative CPU scheduling weight for a VM or container. Raising the etcd guest’s weight can improve its share of CPU when runnable guests compete on the same host, but it does not reserve cores, cap other guests, or guarantee lower etcd latency. A missed-heartbeat warning is a reason to investigate CPU, disk, and peer-network behavior—not proof that this setting is too low.
What Proxmox cpuunits means
Proxmox describes cpuunits as a relative weight used by the kernel scheduler when workloads compete for CPU. It affects how the available processing time is divided among competing runnable guests; it does not create additional CPU capacity or guarantee a fixed amount of time. Proxmox documents the VM option in its QEMU option synopsis and describes the corresponding container setting in its container documentation.
The practical implication is conditional: a higher weight for an etcd guest is worth considering when measurements show CPU contention on its host and other runnable guests are consuming CPU. If there is spare CPU capacity and no competing demand, changing relative weights may do little. This is a consequence of the documented scheduling behavior, not a guaranteed performance result for every workload.
Defaults depend on cgroup version
In the current Proxmox QEMU synopsis, the cgroup v2 default is 100, and the documented cgroup v2 range is 1–10000. The legacy cgroup v1 default is 1024. Proxmox’s container documentation also records 100 as the cgroup v2 default. These numbers are not directly interchangeable without identifying the cgroup version. Proxmox VE 9.0 removed cgroup v1, so do not apply its legacy default to a current VE 9 host. Check the installed Proxmox release and the guest’s actual configuration; the Proxmox documentation index lists the current administration guide at Proxmox VE documentation.

cpuunits versus cpulimit
These controls answer different questions. Proxmox maps cpuunits to the systemd concept CPUWeight and cpulimit to CPUQuota, as clarified in Proxmox project documentation.
| Control | Intent | When host CPU is idle | When workloads compete |
|---|---|---|---|
cpuunits / CPUWeight |
Set relative scheduling weight, or priority, among competing workloads. | Does not reserve unused CPU for the guest. | Influences the guest’s relative share of available CPU. |
cpulimit / CPUQuota |
Limit how much CPU the guest may consume. | The guest remains subject to its configured ceiling. | Caps the guest rather than giving it a larger relative claim on contested CPU. |
Choose a weight when the problem is an unfair share under contention. Choose a limit when the goal is to constrain a guest’s CPU consumption. Neither setting binds etcd to a dedicated core.

Why etcd can miss a heartbeat
etcd needs timely communication among cluster members to make progress. Its FAQ identifies CPU starvation as one possible contributor to long apply latency and missed-heartbeat warnings, but also points to large requests, slow disks, network latency, and packet loss. Consensus depends on a majority of members participating, so a warning does not identify which part of the path is slow. The relevant troubleshooting entry appears in the etcd v3.8 FAQ, which is marked as draft documentation.
etcd’s hardware guidance gives two to four cores as a typical starting point and eight to sixteen dedicated cores for heavily loaded deployments. These are guidelines, not workload-independent guarantees; the project recommends testing a simulated workload before production. See the etcd hardware recommendations.

Diagnose the delay before changing weights
- Confirm the setup. Record the Proxmox release, whether the etcd member runs in a QEMU VM or LXC container, cgroup version, assigned vCPUs, and configured
cpuunits. Compare the configured value with the documentation for that guest type and cgroup version. - Observe CPU during the symptom. Check host and guest CPU utilization and scheduling contention while the warning or elevated latency occurs. Look for runnable competing guests that are consuming CPU. If no such demand is present, a higher relative weight may have little effect.
- Check storage latency and contention. The etcd v3.8 FAQ recommends examining
backend_commit_duration_seconds(p99 below 25 ms) when diagnosing slow apply warnings andwal_fsync_duration_seconds(p99 below 10 ms) for heartbeat warnings. Treat these as diagnostic guidance from a draft-version FAQ, not universal service-level objectives. - Check the peer network. Measure member round-trip time and look for packet loss. A congested or unreliable network can delay consensus even when CPU is available.
- Change one control at a time. If evidence points to CPU contention, adjust the relevant weight, then compare behavior under a representative workload. Avoid changing CPU weight, storage, and etcd timeout settings together; doing so makes it harder to tell which change affected the result.
Use etcd timing settings in the context of measured RTT
The stable etcd v3.7 tuning guide gives defaults of a 100 ms heartbeat interval and a 1000 ms election timeout. It recommends setting the heartbeat interval around 0.5–1.5 times the average member RTT and the election timeout to at least ten times RTT to allow for variance. All members in one cluster should use the same heartbeat interval and election timeout. These values are not a substitute for correcting slow storage, packet loss, or CPU starvation. The guide also notes that etcd is latency-sensitive and that, on Linux, setting the CPU governor to performance or conservative mode can further optimize performance. See etcd v3.7 tuning.
Do not shorten heartbeat intervals simply to make warnings disappear. The etcd guide notes that shorter intervals increase CPU and network use; settings that are too aggressive can add load rather than resolve the underlying delay.

When raising cpuunits is a sensible step
- CPU contention is visible on the host while etcd latency or heartbeat warnings occur.
- Other runnable guests are competing for that CPU capacity.
- Disk latency, peer RTT, and packet loss have been checked rather than assumed healthy.
- You can evaluate the change with a representative workload and monitor the same symptoms afterward.
If those conditions are not met, changing cpuunits is a guess, not a diagnosis. The available documentation describes the scheduling control, but does not establish a universal performance gain from changing it for etcd on Proxmox.
