Add a digital multimeter only if someone in the household knows how to use it safely. The test for every item is simple: it should be identifiable, undamaged, useful, and compatible with something you still have.
1. A safe, compatible USB charger
An extra wall charger is worth keeping when it comes from a reputable source, is in good condition, and suits a device you still use. USB-A and USB-C are different connector types; compatible USB-C devices and chargers can negotiate an appropriate power level. Check the charger and plug for cracks, burn marks, swelling, unusual heat, sparking, smoke, or an odd smell. Stop using a charger that is damaged or shows warning signs, and do not open or try to repair it. Electrical Safety First’s charger guidance covers UK consumer and regulatory context; its legal details should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
2. A known-good charging cable
Keep a small set of cables matched to current devices and the jobs you need them to do. Labeling a cable with its connector and purpose can prevent confusion. Charging and data support are not identical: a cable may be charge-only, and USB-C cables do not all support the same data speeds or power. The U.S. EPA recommends replacing damaged cables and connectors in its equipment-life guidance. Discard or recycle a cable that is frayed, hot, intermittent, or otherwise unsafe rather than keeping it just in case. Although iFixit’s repair guide shows that some cable faults may be repairable, that is not a reason to retain a hazardous cable.
3. A digital multimeter—if someone can use it safely
A multimeter can help with basic electrical troubleshooting, including checking voltage, resistance, and continuity. It is a specialized tool, not a universal household essential. The Klein Tools MM320 kit page lists AC/DC voltage, current, resistance, battery, diode, and continuity functions for that particular kit; features differ by instrument.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before measuring anything, read the manual for your meter and check its safety rating and limits. A multimeter is not casual permission to probe household mains wiring. If you do not know how to select the correct setting and use the leads safely, leave the meter stored and unused—or pass it to someone qualified.
4. A working flashlight
A flashlight has a practical role whether or not you use it for electronics repair. Keep one where it is easy to find, and check its charge or batteries periodically. Rechargeable and battery-powered models have different upkeep needs, so follow the instructions for the one you own. Energizer describes its 3500XT-R flashlight as USB-C rechargeable, with multiple modes and a USB power-bank function. Those are manufacturer claims about that model, not independent test results or a reason to buy a new flashlight if yours works.

When a USB tester is useful
A USB tester can help someone who regularly troubleshoots charging faults, but it is an optional specialist tool—not one of the four broadly useful drawer keepers. Gardner Bender describes its USB tester as a way to identify issues involving ports, phones, chargers, and cables. If charging problems are rare in your household, a tester may add little value.

What to clear out—and how to dispose of it
- Pass on or donate working electronics. If an item no longer suits your household but still works, reuse or donation may extend its life. The U.S. EPA says donating operating electronics extends the lives of valuable products and keeps them out of the waste stream longer. See its electronics reuse and recycling guidance.
- Use local electronics collection for end-of-life devices. Recycling rules and accepted items vary by location; check your local electronics or household hazardous-waste collection program rather than putting unwanted electronics in the trash by default.
- Keep loose rechargeable batteries out of household trash and curbside recycling. The U.S. EPA advises against putting lithium-ion batteries in either. To reduce fire risk, tape the terminals or place each battery in its own plastic bag, then follow local collection instructions. Damaged batteries require careful handling; seek guidance from the manufacturer or local authorities. Do not try to repack or modify batteries yourself—iFixit’s battery-conversion guide warns that modification can be dangerous. The EPA’s used household battery guidance has further handling advice.
