If you’re asking which Linux distro is best for a laptop with 4GB of RAM, start with Linux Mint 22.2 for a comfortable everyday desktop, or choose Xubuntu if you want the lighter Xfce desktop. Those recommendations are based on published system requirements—not performance testing on your particular laptop. Neither distro can guarantee smooth browsing or multitasking on every 4GB machine.

At a glance: Mint or Xubuntu?

What matters Linux Mint 22.2 Xubuntu
Best fit A full desktop and a comfortable general-purpose starting point A lighter desktop direction using Xfce
Published memory guidance 2GB minimum; 4GB recommended for comfortable use, according to the Linux Mint FAQ 512MiB minimum for desktop/live use, according to Xfce’s requirements page; this is a minimum, not a promise about modern workloads
Other published requirements 20GB minimum disk space, 100GB recommended, and 1024×768 resolution, according to the Linux Mint FAQ 7.5GB disk space, a 1.0GHz+ PAE-capable CPU, and an 800×600-capable display, according to Xfce’s requirements page
Support information Mint 22.2 was announced on September 4, 2025, with support until 2029, according to the Linux Mint 22.2 announcement Not stated for a specific Xubuntu release in the cited Xfce requirements page

Why Linux Mint 22.2 is the comfortable everyday pick

Mint’s official guidance draws a useful distinction: 2GB is the minimum, while 4GB is recommended for comfortable use. That makes Mint a reasonable first choice if you want a conventional desktop and everyday features without starting from an especially minimal setup. Its FAQ describes Mint as designed for desktop and laptop computers.

“Comfortable” is not a performance guarantee. A browser with many tabs, video calls, large web apps, and several open programs can use substantial memory. Your experience also depends on the processor, storage, graphics, firmware, and the software you run. Mint 22.2 is an LTS release; its official announcement says it is supported until 2029. The Mint FAQ says LTS releases receive five years of support.

Why choose Xubuntu for a lighter desktop

Xubuntu is Ubuntu-based and uses the Xfce desktop. Choose it if a lighter desktop direction matters more to you than visual richness or bundled convenience. Xfce’s published Xubuntu minimums are far below 4GB, but minimum requirements describe a threshold for running the system; they do not predict how a laptop will handle your browser, video calls, or workload.

The Xubuntu 26.04.1 desktop image directory lists a 64-bit image of 4.8G and says you can try the desktop before installing. Check the Xubuntu 26.04.1 image directory for the available image and release details.

Why standard Ubuntu Desktop is not one of these two picks

Do not confuse Xubuntu with the standard Ubuntu Desktop. Canonical’s current Ubuntu Desktop download page lists 6GB of system memory, so standard Ubuntu Desktop is a poor recommendation for a strict 4GB constraint under its published requirement. Xubuntu is a distinct Ubuntu flavor with its own desktop and published requirements.

Try the laptop before installing

A live USB session lets you check whether the operating system works with your laptop before you change its installation. Ubuntu’s installation guidance describes downloading an ISO, writing it to a USB flash drive, and booting from it; Xubuntu’s image directory also says its desktop image can be tried before installation. Use the same approach with the image you plan to install, and check the release’s instructions.

  1. Back up personal files. Do this before changing partitions or installing an operating system.
  2. Create bootable installation media. Follow the chosen distribution’s installation instructions to write its image to a USB flash drive.
  3. Boot from USB and try the desktop. Check Wi-Fi, audio, display resolution and scaling, suspend and resume, webcam, trackpad, graphics, and battery behavior.
  4. Install only after checking what matters to you. If a key device or feature does not work as expected in the live session, pause and investigate before replacing your current system.

How to make the choice

  • Pick Mint 22.2 if you want a full general-purpose desktop and value Mint’s explicit recommendation of 4GB for comfortable use.
  • Pick Xubuntu if you prefer Xfce and are willing to trade some visual richness or bundled convenience for a lighter desktop direction.
  • Try both live if you are unsure. The feel and hardware compatibility on your exact laptop matter more than the minimum RAM figure alone.
