A useful response tells people what was missing, uncertain, inferred, corrected, or not confirmed, then gives them a clear next step. That matters because a system’s “valid” verdict is not a guarantee that mail or a package will be delivered.
For an address validation API, keep the provider’s structured signals and translate them into clear prompts such as “Add an apartment number” or “Confirm this suggested address.” The right outcome depends on what the system established and how much risk your application can accept.
Why a boolean is not enough
A boolean compresses several materially different outcomes into the same two choices. An address might be complete and confirmed, missing a unit number, corrected by the service, or only verified to a broad geographic area. Treating all of these as simply valid or invalid hides what the user needs to do.
A verdict is useful as a summary, but it is not the whole explanation. Google’s Address Validation API returns a verdict alongside address details, geocode, metadata and, for US and Puerto Rico addresses, USPS data. Google describes the verdict as a baseline summary of address quality. Google’s response guide also describes signals such as possible next action, validation granularity, completeness, and whether components were inferred or unconfirmed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the summary to make a decision, and the accompanying fields to explain it. Google’s documentation cautions against treating individual component confirmation levels as a fixed integration contract; build around the documented response and your own policy rather than assuming every component signal will behave as a permanent standalone rule.

"message": "We corrected the street name. Confirm that this is the address you intended.",
"suggested_address": { "...": "..." },
"signals": { "...": "provider response details" },
"next_action": "confirm_suggested_address"
}
These field names are design suggestions, not a provider’s prescribed schema. Preserve the raw provider signals separately from your reason codes and localized message. That lets the application change its acceptance policy without discarding the evidence used to make the decision.
statusgives the application a compact outcome, such asneeds_input,confirm_suggestion, oraccepted.reasonsrecords stable explanations, such asmissing_subpremise,unconfirmed_component, oraddress_corrected.messagesays plainly what the system found.suggested_addresscarries a normalized or corrected version when one is available.signalsretains supporting details such as completeness, granularity, and applicable postal checks.next_actiontells the interface or user whether to add information, review a suggestion, or continue.
Google’s workflow guidance illustrates the distinction between fixing likely significant issues, adding a missing subpremise, confirming a correction, and accepting a sufficiently strong result. Use that as a design pattern, not as a universal rule: acceptance should reflect the application’s risk tolerance, and it does not promise postal delivery. Google’s validation-logic guide describes these decisions.

Distinguish a missing unit from a wrong address
For US USPS Delivery Point Validation (DPV) results, the codes help distinguish a primary street address from its secondary information. Google documents these meanings:
| DPV code | What it indicates | Useful user-facing direction |
|---|---|---|
Y |
The primary and any secondary numbers were confirmed. | Continue if the rest of the response meets your application’s acceptance policy. |
D |
The primary number matched, but secondary information was missing. | Ask for an apartment, suite, or other unit number if the destination requires one. |
S |
The primary number matched, but the supplied secondary information did not confirm. | Ask the user to check the unit number rather than implying the street address is wrong. |
N |
The primary and any secondary information failed to confirm. | Ask the user to review the address details. |
| No DPV value | No DPV result is present; it is not a confirmed result. | Use the other response fields and do not treat missing data as confirmation. |
These are US-specific USPS signals, not universal postal rules. USPS information in Google’s response applies to US and Puerto Rico addresses, and postal data may be absent. Read a DPV code together with the rest of the response instead of treating it as a complete verdict. Google’s USPS address reference documents the field.

Make corrections and uncertainty visible
If the service inferred, replaced, or spell-corrected an address component, show the proposed change when it could affect the intended destination. A corrected address can be useful, but silently substituting it risks sending something to the wrong place. Ask for confirmation when the change is meaningful; use a more specific prompt when the service identifies a missing or unconfirmed component.
Granularity is another important qualifier. If a provider verifies an address only to a locality or route rather than a premise, it has not established the exact delivery destination. Tell the user what level was confirmed instead of presenting the result as a fully verified street address. Google’s response guide and API reference describe the response fields used to interpret validation detail.

Choose acceptance rules for the application’s risk
Not every workflow needs the same threshold. A low-risk form may let someone continue after a clear warning; a shipment workflow may require a missing unit number or confirmation of a corrected address. Base the decision on the structured signals, the action’s consequences, and whether the provider supplied the relevant evidence.
- Ask for input when a required component is missing or a supplied component is not confirmed.
- Request confirmation when the service proposes a correction or inference that might change the destination.
- Accept only when the result meets the application’s chosen threshold, while avoiding any promise that validation guarantees delivery.
- Handle unavailable signals explicitly rather than interpreting absent postal data as a successful check.
Do not treat a provider’s suggested action as a substitute for application policy. Keep reason codes stable enough for interfaces, logging, and support workflows, while retaining the underlying provider response to support future policy changes.
