Yes, a MacBook screen protector can contribute to damage if it interferes with the display’s tightly engineered clearance when the lid closes—but Apple does not say that every screen protector will cause damage. Apple specifically warns that material left on the display, keyboard, or palm rest can interfere with closure. Its guidance does not test every adhered screen protector or establish that a particular one is safe.
Why something between the screen and keyboard can be a problem
Apple says the clearance between a Mac notebook’s display and top case is engineered to tight tolerances. Material left on the display, keyboard, or palm rest may interfere with the display when the computer is closed and cause damage. Apple’s direct instruction is to remove camera, keyboard, and palm-rest covers before closing a Mac notebook. Apple’s Mac notebook camera, keyboard, and palm-rest cover guidance does not make the same specific recommendation about every adhered screen protector.
That distinction matters: a thin film attached to the display is not the same accessory as a loose keyboard cover, a camera shutter, a palm-rest cover, or cloth left inside the closed computer. The general clearance warning makes interference a possibility, not an inevitable result. Apple has not published a model-by-model test of screen protectors, so neither a universal damage claim nor a blanket safety assurance is supported.
What Apple’s 0.1 mm guidance does—and does not—mean
Apple’s workplace guidance says that if a camera cover is required, it should be no thicker than 0.1 mm and should not leave adhesive residue; a thicker camera cover should be removed before closing the display. That measurement is specifically for camera covers. It is not a safe-thickness limit for screen protectors, and it does not establish that a screen protector at or below 0.1 mm is safe.

A camera cover can also interfere with the ambient-light sensor and features such as automatic brightness and True Tone. Apple suggests using the camera indicator and reviewing app permissions as alternatives to covering the camera.
How to assess a screen protector before using it
- Check the exact MacBook model. Confirm that the accessory is intended for your specific model, rather than relying on a general MacBook compatibility claim.
- Consider what remains in the closing area. A protector or accessory that affects how the lid closes raises a concern under Apple’s clearance warning.
- Do not treat thinness as proof of safety. Apple’s 0.1 mm figure applies only to camera covers, not screen protectors.
- Seek product-specific support. Apple’s published guidance does not certify a named screen protector for a named MacBook model. For a stronger safety judgment, look for information from Apple or the accessory maker that addresses that exact combination.
If your goal is simply to remove fingerprints or smudges, routine cleaning may be enough without adding an accessory.

What to do if you see keyboard marks
A mark on the display does not, by itself, identify its cause. Apple’s clearance guidance establishes that material in the closing area can pose a risk, but it does not say keyboard marks are inevitable, explain the cause of a particular mark, or determine whether it can be removed or is permanent. Avoid assuming remotely that a mark is dirt, keyboard transfer, or coating damage.
For ordinary smudges, Apple’s Mac display-cleaning instructions are to shut down and unplug the computer, then wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water. Apple also says a cloth moistened with 70-percent isopropyl alcohol may be used gently for hard-to-remove smudges or fingerprints on a Mac laptop display or enclosure. Check Apple’s current cleaning guidance and the instructions for your exact display type before using a cleaning method.
