Feature flags let teams deploy code separately from releasing it, but each flag can leave another branch, test condition, fallback, and maintenance decision behind. Give every temporary flag an owner and an expiry or review date. Treat that date as a prompt to inspect and decide—not as an automatic deletion command.

Why an unreviewed flag becomes technical debt

A flag is a decision point in the application: code may behave one way when it is on and another when it is off. That separation is useful during a staged release or experiment, but the conditional path remains after the immediate task is finished unless someone removes or deliberately maintains it. More paths mean more code to understand and test, and old fallback logic can complicate maintenance. Unleash also warns that stale or conflicting flags can contribute to unexpected behavior and may unintentionally expose sensitive features or data; these are risks, not inevitable outcomes of every old flag. Unleash describes flag lifetimes and lifecycle states, while its technical-debt guidance discusses the risks of unmanaged flags.

There is no reliable universal statistic for how prevalent this problem is or how much it costs. The practical point is simpler: a flag with no owner or next review date can remain in code because nobody knows whether it is still needed.

Which flags should expire—and which may remain

Most release and experiment flags are temporary: they help control a rollout or compare behavior, then should be removed after the decision is made. Interoperability-testing flags may also be temporary. Other flags can serve an enduring purpose, such as permissions or entitlements, load shedding, custom branding, accessibility settings, kill switches, or internal debugging and observability controls. Those are candidates for permanent classification, not exemptions from review. LaunchDarkly distinguishes temporary and permanent flag uses; Unleash documents flag types and their lifetimes.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Unleash’s 2026 documentation sets default expected lifetimes of 40 days for Release flags, 40 days for Experiment flags, 7 days for Operational flags, and 90 days for Sunset flags. Kill switch and Permission flags have a default expected lifetime of “Permanent.” These are Unleash product defaults, not industry-wide standards; teams should set dates to match their own release cadence and risk.

A permanent flag still needs an owner and periodic review. The product requirement, safety rationale, or operational need that justified it can change. Record why it is permanent so a later maintainer can distinguish an intentional control from forgotten temporary work.

Set the review point when creating the flag

Do not wait for a dashboard to reveal an old flag. At creation, make its purpose and eventual cleanup part of the work item:

  • Purpose: what behavior the flag controls and what outcome completes the rollout or experiment.
  • Owner: a person or team responsible for the decision and cleanup.
  • Classification: temporary, with an expected expiry date, or permanent, with a reason and next review date.
  • Cleanup task: where the code removal and any archive action will be tracked.

Unleash recommends expiration dates and planning cleanup as part of sprint or project work. Its guidance is to use expiration to track flags that may no longer be needed, not to let old flags disappear without review. Unleash’s best-practices page covers expiration dates and cleanup planning.

What an expiry date should trigger

When the date arrives, review the flag rather than deleting it blindly. First determine whether the rollout or experiment is complete and whether the intended behavior is now the permanent product behavior. Then inspect the places that can change the decision:

  1. Check relevant environments. Confirm the flag’s state and usage in every environment that matters, including critical production environments. A flag can be active in one environment and inactive in another.
  2. Find code references. Identify the conditional branches and related tests. A dashboard status alone may not tell you whether code still depends on the flag.
  3. Inspect prerequisites and dependencies. Another flag or system may rely on this one, and prerequisite relationships can affect whether evaluations occur.
  4. Verify fallback behavior. Decide what the application should do after the conditional is removed, and check that the remaining path is correct.
  5. Choose the outcome. Remove the temporary flag and its obsolete code path, or document why the flag is still needed and assign a new review date.

Unleash describes a lifecycle in which exceeding a type’s expected lifetime makes a flag potentially stale; a stale marker signals review and can generate an integration event, but does not itself change application behavior. In that vendor’s workflow, a completed feature may enter Cleanup while production usage remains. Unleash says that when production usage metrics have been absent for at least two days, it is likely safe to archive. That is a vendor-specific indication—not a universal safe-to-delete rule. See Unleash’s lifecycle documentation.

Remove code before archiving the flag

Removal and archiving are separate actions. Remove obsolete conditionals, tests, and related code first; then archive the flag in the management system if the team no longer needs it active. Archiving alone can leave the application’s old branches behind. Conversely, deleting a flag before understanding its references or dependencies can break behavior.

Keep history when it helps explain a rollout or decision. The objective is not to erase the record; it is to stop carrying unnecessary decision logic in active code while retaining useful operational context.

Vendor lifecycle indicators are aids, not universal rules

LaunchDarkly documents example readiness criteria rather than a rule that applies to every team. Its default criteria include a temporary flag at least 30 days old, launched in all critical environments, with code references, and not a prerequisite as potentially ready for code removal. A different case—at least 30 days old, inactive in all critical environments, without code references, and not a prerequisite—can be ready to archive. LaunchDarkly defines “inactive” in this context as no evaluation for at least seven days, and notes that statuses are environment-specific and prerequisites can affect evaluations. These product criteria still call for team action; a status is not itself permission to delete. LaunchDarkly explains its flag statuses and lifecycle stages.

When evaluating any flag-management system, check whether it supports explicit lifetimes by flag type, what happens when a flag becomes potentially stale, whether it can reveal code references and prerequisites, whether it separates code removal from archiving, and whether checks cover the environments your team relies on. Product lifecycle labels and thresholds differ; do not assume one vendor’s workflow describes another’s.
