Design around each workload’s actual bandwidth, latency, security, reliability, and operational needs; then apply consistent identity, policy, and visibility across cloud boundaries.
What AI changes in a multicloud network
AI workloads can make the network an active part of application behavior rather than just a path between systems. An application may coordinate users, data stores, agents, tools, and model endpoints through several service-to-service calls. Some inference workflows may also cross regions. Those patterns make route selection, service identity, policy enforcement, observability, and failure recovery more consequential.
That does not mean every AI deployment needs a global network or a particular vendor gateway. Treat AI as another workload class: map its actual flows and dependencies, then determine whether existing connectivity and controls meet its requirements.
Google Cloud’s Rob Enns described the network as an integration layer for agentic enterprises in an announcement published April 22, 2026. The same announcement reported that Google’s Cross-Cloud Network was used by 65% of the Fortune 100 and handled up to 27 exabytes of data per month; these are Google-reported figures, not independently audited measurements. Google Cloud’s announcement also described new AI-oriented features, several in preview.

Start with workload flows, not a preferred topology
Google Cloud’s secure networking guidance places network choices within a broader landing zone that includes identity, resource management, security, networking, and monitoring. Applications can use different network patterns while retaining consistent governance across multicloud environments. Google’s hybrid and multicloud secure networking patterns and its design considerations provide Google-specific guidance, not a universal reference design for every provider.
Use a workload-by-workload design sequence:
- Map the application. Identify components, service interfaces, data sources, model endpoints, tools, and external dependencies. Record which flows are synchronous, which can tolerate delay, and what volume or burst behavior is expected.
- Set boundaries. Establish administrative and trust boundaries, and decide where identity-based controls, firewalls, or Layer 7 inspection are needed.
- Select connectivity per flow. Compare options against the workload’s performance, security, cost, reliability, and scaling requirements rather than choosing one transport for everything.
- Assign shared operating responsibilities. Define who owns cross-cloud policy, logging, incident response, and changes to routes or security controls.
- Test recovery. Exercise regional and provider failure scenarios, including dependencies that may prevent a workload from recovering even when its network path is available.
This approach is compatible with different architectural patterns. Google’s enterprise architecture guidance discusses lift-and-shift, hybrid-services, and zero-trust distributed architectures, as well as mirrored, meshed, gated ingress/egress, and handover patterns. Treat these as options to match to application dependencies and trust boundaries, not as a maturity ladder or a required progression. See Google’s architectural approaches for migrating enterprise workloads and its hybrid and multicloud architecture patterns.

Compare connectivity options against the same criteria
Connectivity is a workload decision. Google’s guidance covers internet connectivity, VPN, private Interconnect, Cross-Cloud Interconnect, and Network Connectivity Center (NCC). The service names and capabilities below describe Google Cloud options; equivalent services, locations, and operating models vary by provider.
| Approach | What it offers | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Internet-based connectivity | Uses the public internet; application-layer encryption can protect traffic where appropriate. | Can the workload meet its latency, packet-loss, jitter, and bandwidth requirements over internet paths? Where are encryption and application controls enforced? |
| VPN | Private, encrypted connectivity over the public internet through Cloud VPN or customer-managed VPN gateways. Google’s guidance also mentions partner SD-WAN network virtual appliances. | Does the tunnel design meet throughput and recovery needs? Who operates the gateways, and what happens when a tunnel or internet path fails? |
| Dedicated or Partner Interconnect | Private transport that may suit workloads where more deterministic performance and an SLA matter. | Are the locations, capacity, redundancy, and service terms suitable for the workload and its recovery objectives? |
| Cross-Cloud Interconnect | Private connectivity between Google Cloud and supported cloud providers in specified locations. | Are the required locations supported, and do the architecture and prerequisites match the intended design? Google documents 99.9% and 99.99% availability options for the described service and architecture; verify current terms before treating either as a commitment. |
| Network Connectivity Center | A Google Cloud hub-and-spoke orchestration framework for VPC, router-appliance, and hybrid spokes. | Does a hub-and-spoke management model fit the required routes and failure domains? Which teams operate the hub and connected spokes? |
For every candidate, assess performance, security, cost, reliability and SLA, and scalability. Make the assessment concrete: expected bandwidth and traffic growth; latency, packet loss, and jitter limits; encryption and inspection points; transport and operational costs; failure domains; and the teams responsible for configuration and troubleshooting. Google’s network design guidance discusses these comparison dimensions and connectivity choices.

Extend security and visibility across cloud boundaries
A cloud network should not simply reproduce an on-premises perimeter. Google recommends cloud-first controls, defense in depth, and a unified security posture with visibility across environments. For AI-connected services, make the security design answer practical questions:
- Which identities may invoke each model, agent, or tool, and what context is checked before access?
- Where are traffic inspection and policy enforcement applied, including between services inside a cloud?
- Which logs and telemetry are available to investigate a cross-cloud request, and can teams correlate activity across providers?
- Who approves and implements policy changes, and who leads incident response when a flow crosses organizational or provider boundaries?
These controls should be part of the application lifecycle, not an afterthought added when traffic is already in production. A centralized policy model can help with consistency, but its design must still account for provider-specific identity, routing, and logging capabilities.

Separate architectural needs from vendor features
Google Cloud’s April 22, 2026 announcement described Agent Gateway for agent protocols and centralized governance as a preview capability. It also described multiregion support and predictive latency routing for GKE Inference Gateway as preview capabilities. Ambient networking and its reported resource reduction are Google product claims. These announcements point to possible implementation tools, not prerequisites for a multicloud AI architecture. Check current availability, supported regions, and product status before planning around them. Google Cloud’s announcement is the source for those claims.
Cisco’s June 2, 2026 overview describes Multicloud Fabric features including zero-trust routing, identity-based segmentation, service chaining, and end-to-end visibility. These are Cisco’s product claims, not evidence that a fabric is necessary for every organization. Evaluate any such offer against your workload requirements, existing controls, provider support, operational model, and verified product documentation.
