If an AI keeps ignoring your instructions, first find out whether the instruction is unclear, missing context, buried in input, blocked by a higher-priority rule, or dependent on a tool the AI cannot use. Repeating the same request more forcefully is unlikely to fix those causes. Diagnose the failure, revise the prompt for that cause, and test the change on more than one example.
Why is AI ignoring my instructions?
“Ignoring” can describe several different failures: the model misunderstands a vague request, lacks information needed to complete it, treats source text as part of the instruction, or cannot perform an action because a required tool is unavailable. In an API-backed application, a rule may also be placed in a lower-priority message than a conflicting application instruction.
Start by identifying what happened: Did the answer miss a requirement, use the wrong format, contradict a rule, or fail to take an action? The failure points to a different fix. Also check whether the model or version changed if a prompt that previously worked has begun to fail.
How do I get ChatGPT or another AI to follow instructions?
1. Check where the instruction lives
In OpenAI’s API, the instructions parameter provides high-level behavior guidance and takes priority over the input parameter. OpenAI’s prompt-engineering guide also describes developer messages as higher priority than user messages. If an application-level rule conflicts with your request, changing only the user prompt may not resolve it. See OpenAI’s prompt engineering guide for the API-specific details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Exact roles and controls depend on the product or API. A consumer chat interface may not expose the same instruction fields as a developer’s application, so do not assume you can inspect or edit every higher-priority rule.
2. Turn vague intent into a testable request
Specify the action and what a successful result should look like. Include the output format, scope, relevant exclusions, and constraints. If the task has ordered or separate requirements, number them. Words such as “better,” “proper,” and “as needed” leave room for interpretation unless you explain what they mean in this task.
For example, replace “Make this clearer” with “Rewrite the paragraph for a nontechnical reader in no more than 120 words. Preserve the dates and product names, define unavoidable technical terms, and return only the revised paragraph.” Anthropic likewise recommends direct, explicit instructions and specifying output format and constraints in its prompt engineering guide.

3. Add context that changes the answer
Provide the audience, purpose, domain conventions, rubric, source document, or business rules the answer depends on. If a preference might otherwise seem arbitrary, briefly explain why it matters when that reason affects the result. OpenAI notes that context can provide proprietary or otherwise unavailable information and constrain responses to selected resources; Anthropic also recommends context or motivation to help target an answer.
Include relevant material, not every available detail. Extra information that does not bear on the task can make the instruction harder to locate without improving the answer.
4. Separate rules from source material
When a prompt contains both instructions and text to analyze, label the parts—for example, Instructions, Context, and Input. Headings, Markdown, or descriptive XML tags can make those boundaries clearer. This is a structuring aid, not a guarantee that the model will obey every rule.

5. Show the pattern with examples
If you need a recurring format, tone, classification, or edge-case decision, include representative input-and-output examples. Choose examples that resemble the real task and cover meaningful variation. Check that each example agrees with the written rule; an example that contradicts it can teach the wrong pattern.
Anthropic’s general guide recommends 3–5 examples, but that is provider advice, not a universal, independently established success rule for all models. OpenAI also recommends using diverse possible inputs when applying few-shot examples.

A model cannot reliably perform an application action merely because the prompt asks for it: the relevant tool must be enabled and described to the model. Be explicit about whether you want an action or advice. “Suggest edits” can reasonably produce recommendations; “Edit the document using the available document tool and preserve the headings” asks for a change. Tool setup and controls vary by product, so verify them in that product’s current documentation.

How can I tell whether a prompt fix worked?
Keep a small set of representative prompts, including ordinary cases and edge cases. For each, note the qualities or outputs that count as success—such as required fields, preserved facts, or a specific action completed. Change one plausible cause at a time, then compare results across the same cases. This helps reveal whether the revision addressed the problem or merely produced one lucky answer.
OpenAI recommends tests and evaluation suites when iterating on prompts and monitoring behavior across model changes. Its documentation cautions that model output is nondeterministic: “Because the content generated from a model is non-deterministic, prompting to get your desired result is a mix of art and science.” A successful response once is not proof that a prompt will work reliably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if a prompt used to work but now fails?
Check which model and version or snapshot the application is using before rewriting the prompt. Behavior can vary across models and snapshots. For production applications, OpenAI recommends pinning to specific model snapshots and monitoring prompt behavior. Anthropic’s model-specific guidance should likewise be checked against evaluations before techniques are transferred to another model.

If the model changed, test the existing prompt and revised versions against the same representative cases. That separates a wording problem from a change in model behavior and gives you evidence about whether a model-specific adjustment is needed.
Which fix should I try first?
| Likely cause | First fix | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Conflicting higher-priority instruction | Inspect the applicable message or instruction field, if the product exposes it; resolve the conflict at the appropriate level. | Retest the request where the conflict occurred. |
| Vague or incomplete request | Name the action, output, scope, and constraints; number steps if order matters. | Check that each required element appears in the output. |
| Missing information | Supply the relevant audience, source, rubric, or business rule. | Test on a case that depends on that information. |
| Mixed instructions and input | Label and separate instructions, context, examples, and source material. | Check whether the model follows the rule while treating the input as material to analyze. |
| Unclear recurring pattern | Add relevant, varied input/output examples. | Test examples that include meaningful edge cases. |
| Requested action does not happen | Confirm the required tool is enabled and described; distinguish an action request from a request for suggestions. | Verify that the tool action occurred, not just that the response discussed it. |
| Recent change in results | Verify the model or snapshot and compare it with the previous setup if available. | Run the same evaluation cases on the current version. |
No single prompt format is established as best for every model and task. Use the smallest change that addresses the likely cause, then keep it only if it improves results across representative cases.
