Gartner’s September 1, 2026 Strategic Cloud Platform Services Magic Quadrant does not identify a public winner between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. Gartner’s public abstract highlights AI capabilities, industry solutions, digital sovereignty, operational efficiency, and hybrid and multicloud needs as factors shaping cloud-provider selection, but it does not disclose the providers’ exact positions or detailed comparative strengths. Treat the Magic Quadrant as a way to frame a shortlist—not as a substitute for comparing your workloads, costs, locations, and operating requirements.

What Gartner’s 2026 edition tells us about AWS vs. Azure

Gartner’s public page identifies the report as the Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services, published September 1, 2026. Its abstract describes selection themes, including AI, industry-specific solutions, digital sovereignty, operational efficiency, and hybrid and multicloud strategies. It does not reveal where AWS or Microsoft Azure appears on the quadrant, or provide the detailed vendor analysis needed to rank them.

That distinction matters: a current report date is not evidence of a current vendor position. Without the full 2026 chart and analysis, it would be misleading to call either provider the 2026 Gartner leader or infer a placement from an older report or a vendor announcement.

How to read a Gartner Magic Quadrant

Gartner describes Magic Quadrants as positioning vendors according to two dimensions: Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. Its methodology can use up to 15 weighted criteria to assess those dimensions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Dimension Factors Gartner says it can include Questions to ask for your cloud decision
Ability to Execute Products and services, viability, sales execution and pricing, responsiveness, customer experience, and operations. Can the provider deliver the services your workloads need in your locations, at a cost and operational standard your organization can sustain?
Completeness of Vision Market and product strategy, innovation, industry strategy, and geographic strategy. Does the provider’s direction fit your technical roadmap, industry requirements, and geographic or sovereignty needs?

The axes are broad evaluations, not a workload-specific price or performance result. Gartner’s Magic Quadrant FAQ says, “Magic Quadrants are a starting point,” and recommends using Critical Capabilities, Peer Insights, and analyst discussions alongside the quadrant. Gartner describes Critical Capabilities as a deeper product and service comparison by use case.

What the available evidence establishes about each provider

The public 2026 abstract does not provide enough detail for a direct ranking. The following evidence can inform questions, but none supplies a current, like-for-like AWS-versus-Azure verdict.

Evidence What it establishes What it does not establish
Gartner’s 2026 public abstract, published September 1, 2026 The report’s publication date and high-level selection themes. AWS’s or Azure’s exact 2026 quadrant placement, relative strengths, price, or performance.
AWS News Blog post by Channy Yun, August 15, 2025 AWS says Gartner named it a Leader for the fifteenth consecutive year in the 2025 report and placed it highest on Ability to Execute. AWS’s 2026 position, or an independently verified 2025 chart comparison. This is AWS’s account of the earlier report.
Gartner’s distributed-cloud abstract, published April 23, 2025 Gartner names AWS Outposts and Microsoft Azure Local as distributed-cloud options. It describes distributed cloud as a hybrid model delivered and operated by public-cloud providers with a consistent control plane. A detailed product comparison, current capabilities by region, or which option better fits a particular organization.

How to make the comparison useful for a real decision

Use the quadrant to identify areas for investigation, then compare the providers against the same requirements and assumptions. A defensible decision depends on the services and regions you need, not an undifferentiated claim that one cloud is best overall.

  1. Define the workloads. List the applications and the compute, data, AI, and industry-specific capabilities each requires. Separate firm requirements from preferences, and identify dependencies that could make a move difficult.
  2. Build equivalent cost models. Request current regional pricing for the same workload and usage pattern from both providers. Include the actual service mix, commitments, support, data movement, and staffing assumptions. Gartner includes pricing and operations among execution criteria, but the material available here contains no like-for-like AWS and Azure quote or benchmark.
  3. Check location and sovereignty requirements. Confirm residency rules, jurisdiction, service availability, support arrangements, and operational constraints for every required location. Gartner’s abstract names digital sovereignty as a selection driver; it does not establish region-by-region legal or service availability.
  4. Evaluate hybrid requirements separately. If workloads must remain on premises or use a provider-operated control plane, compare AWS Outposts and Azure Local against your requirements for connectivity, management, deployment location, and workload constraints. Gartner’s 2025 abstract identifies both options but does not provide detailed comparative findings.
  5. Test operations and fit. Run a representative pilot and assess the services your teams would operate, the skills and support they need, and the customer experience relevant to your environment. Use product documentation, customer references, and Gartner Peer Insights to test assumptions rather than treating quadrant position as proof of fit.
  6. Revisit the full Gartner analysis if you need its ranking. Check the report’s “as of” date, methodology, vendor positions, and detailed analysis. Pair it with use-case-level Critical Capabilities and other evidence; the public abstract alone cannot resolve AWS-versus-Azure placement.

Verdict: the 2026 public summary is not an AWS-versus-Azure ranking

Gartner’s latest identified edition supplies useful selection themes, but its public abstract does not disclose whether AWS or Azure ranks higher. The 2025 AWS statement and Gartner’s distributed-cloud examples add context, not a 2026 winner. For procurement, compare both providers against the same workloads, regional cost assumptions, hybrid needs, sovereignty constraints, and operational requirements—and use Gartner’s detailed tools as supporting evidence rather than the decision itself.
