A production-ready Django application starts with clear user workflows and deliberate architecture—not just django-admin startproject. Translate requirements into data models, routes, views, and tests; keep project configuration distinct from app responsibilities; and plan production settings, serving, assets, backups, and monitoring before launch. This guide follows Django 6.0 documentation, current as of October 5, 2026. Verify release-specific details against the documentation for the Django version you deploy.
How do you turn requirements into a Django design?
Start by describing what the software must let people do, rather than by choosing a folder structure. This is project-planning advice, not a Django-prescribed requirements method. For each important workflow, identify the user, the action, the data involved, the permission rules, and the expected result. Include operational needs such as handling uploads or protecting authenticated sessions.
Then map those observable behaviors to Django components. A workflow may need a model for persistent data, a URL pattern for its address, a view for request handling, and a form, template, or API response for input and output. Add tests for important rules and request behavior as the design takes shape. Django’s tutorial demonstrates the URL-to-view request path and the relationship between projects and apps (Django tutorial, “Writing your first Django app, part 1”).
What is the difference between a Django project and an app?
A project is the configured website: its settings and the apps assembled to serve that site. An app is a functional component that does something. A project can contain multiple apps, and an app can be reused in more than one project. These definitions come from Django’s tutorial and application reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose app boundaries around coherent responsibilities and likely reuse—not a universal app count or mandatory layout. For example, a site might separate account management from a domain-specific workflow if the responsibilities are distinct. Keep related behavior together where that makes changes easier to understand; avoid splitting a small feature into extra apps merely to increase modularity.
What does the Django project scaffold create?
The startproject command creates a management entry point and a Python package containing the site’s core configuration and server interfaces. The standard files provide useful starting points, but they do not decide your domain model, permissions, production architecture, or operational safeguards.
| Scaffold item | Role |
|---|---|
manage.py |
Command-line utility for operating the project. |
settings.py |
Project configuration. |
urls.py |
Project-level URL declarations. |
wsgi.py |
WSGI server entry point. |
asgi.py |
ASGI server entry point. |
Django’s tutorial describes a project as “a collection of configuration and apps for a particular website” (Django tutorial, part 1). The generated files are a shell on which to build the application, not proof that it is ready to deploy.

How should you organize apps and URL routes?
Keep app responsibilities coherent
The conventional app package generated by Django includes modules such as admin.py, apps.py, models.py, tests.py, and views.py. Use the modules that fit the component’s responsibilities; Django does not require every project to follow one expanded directory layout. Keep domain rules, data ownership, and permissions clear enough that a change to one responsibility does not unexpectedly affect unrelated behavior.
Compose URL patterns
Project URL declarations can include an app’s URL patterns with include(). This keeps routing modular and allows an app’s routes to be mounted under different URL roots. Design paths around stable, user-visible workflows or resource concepts, then connect each pattern to a view that enforces the relevant behavior and permissions. See the tutorial’s URLconf and view explanation.
How should testing influence the design?
Django provides a dedicated testing framework. Write tests as the important behavior becomes concrete, especially where business rules, permissions, or request/response behavior could regress. Tests help keep implementation decisions connected to the requirements; there is no universal coverage threshold that makes a project production-ready.

How do you separate development and production configuration?
A Django settings file is a Python module, and DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE selects which settings module Django uses. Keep environment-specific values—particularly secret and database credentials—out of source control and provide appropriate values to the deployed environment. Development conveniences must not silently carry over into production.
- Use a random, private production
SECRET_KEY, unique to production and not committed to source control. - Set
DEBUG=Falsein production. When debug mode is off, configureALLOWED_HOSTSfor the legitimate hostnames. - Protect database credentials and restrict which systems can connect to the database.
These are among the security requirements in Django’s deployment checklist and settings documentation.
Which interface should you use: WSGI or ASGI?
Django supports both interfaces. WSGI is synchronous; ASGI is asynchronous-friendly. The right fit depends on whether the application needs asynchronous Python and Django capabilities, and on compatibility with the production server and middleware you choose. Neither interface is universally preferable. Django explains the options in How to deploy Django.

| Interface | Useful distinction | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| WSGI | Synchronous interface. | Use when a synchronous application and its selected production server and middleware fit the need. |
| ASGI | Asynchronous-friendly interface. | Consider when the application needs asynchronous capabilities and the chosen server and middleware support the design. |
Hosting provider, database engine, and deployment architecture are separate choices. Django’s deployment overview leaves those decisions to the application’s architecture and business needs; assess operational requirements, team capability, reliability, cost, security controls, and compatibility rather than assuming the framework dictates one provider.

Run Django behind a production server
Django requires a web server interface, but its built-in runserver is only for development. The Django 6.0 deployment documentation states: “The runserver command starts a lightweight development server, which is not suitable for production.” Choose a production server and deployment design compatible with the application’s WSGI or ASGI interface and operational needs; Django does not prescribe one universal hosting provider. See How to deploy Django.
Handle static files and uploads deliberately
Configure STATIC_ROOT for collected static assets and decide which component serves them in the deployed architecture. Do not assume the development server’s asset behavior is a production strategy. User-uploaded media is untrusted: ensure the web server cannot interpret uploaded files as executable content, and include media in backup planning. Django covers these points in its deployment checklist and static-files deployment guide.

Protect authenticated traffic and plan recovery
For sites with logins, enforce HTTPS across the site because session cookies are shared across HTTP and HTTPS. Arrange database backups and control access to the database; plan media backups as well. Review logging and error reporting so failures can be detected and investigated after launch. These are operational requirements, not optional consequences of choosing a particular project layout (Django deployment checklist).
What should you check before launch?
- Provide the production settings and run
python manage.py check --deploywith those settings. Django recommends this deployment check in its checklist. - Confirm production uses
DEBUG=False, a private production secret, and suitableALLOWED_HOSTS. - Verify HTTPS across authenticated pages and that database credentials, access, and backups are handled securely.
- Confirm collected static files and untrusted uploads are served safely, with backups for both database and media.
- Check that logging and error reporting are ready for the deployed environment.
Caching sessions, persistent database connections, and template caching are possible performance measures, not universal launch requirements. The Django checklist presents them as considerations to apply when workload and deployment behavior justify them. Avoid adding configuration without a reason, and verify any release-specific settings in the documentation for the Django version you run.
