For a histogram directly in a terminal, start with plotext: it supports histogram plots and provides a command-line interface that can draw plots without putting Python code in a script. If you already use gnuplot, its dumb terminal can render plots as text, but its documented histograms style arranges data columns into grouped or stacked bars; it is not, by itself, automatic binning of raw observations.
Choose a tool based on your data and workflow
| Option | Best fit | Input and output to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| plotext CLI | You want a terminal-oriented plot and prefer to issue plot commands without writing them into a Python script. | Its documentation establishes terminal plotting in colored text and includes histogram support. Check the command-line reference for method and parameter syntax and invocation examples. |
gnuplot with dumb terminal |
You already work in gnuplot or want its plotting workflow to emit text. | The dumb driver draws an ASCII text block and offers controls for output dimensions, aspect, and fill character. The documented histogram styles use parallel data columns for bar arrangements. |
The key distinction is the data you have. Raw numeric observations need to be counted into bins to form a frequency histogram. Precomputed bin counts, or parallel columns of values intended for comparison, represent a different input shape. Do not assume that selecting a program’s “histograms” plotting style performs the raw-data binning step.
Plot with plotext from the command line
Plotext is the direct option when you want a histogram rendered in the terminal without building a Python plotting script. Its documentation describes terminal plots as colored text and documents both histogram support and a CLI. The user guide covers plotting, while the CLI reference explains command syntax and parameters.
Use the reference’s examples to match the command to your data and desired histogram settings; the documentation cited here does not establish one universal command line for every input format. If your values are still raw observations, confirm how the chosen histogram command accepts them rather than passing bin-count columns as if they were unprocessed samples.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Render gnuplot output as text
Gnuplot’s dumb terminal turns a plot into a text block. Its driver has configurable size, aspect ratio, and fill character, along with ANSI-related modes. The precise appearance of colors or character modes can depend on the terminal displaying the output, so do not assume every environment will render them identically.
Understand gnuplot’s histogram data layout
In gnuplot’s documented histograms style, “histograms” refers to bar layouts built from data columns. Available arrangements include clustered bars, error bars, row-stacked bars, and column-stacked bars; clustered is the default. These layouts compare or stack values organized in parallel columns. They should not be mistaken for taking an arbitrary list of observations and automatically computing frequency bins.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
If you need a frequency distribution from raw observations, prepare the bins and their counts in a suitable data form before using a column-based bar layout. If your data already consists of categories or bins with one or more series of values, the documented histogram arrangements may fit that shape.

Check the data before choosing the command
- Raw observations: You have individual measurements and need a frequency count for ranges. Identify how the selected tool expects observations and handles binning.
- Bin/count pairs: You have already calculated a count for each interval. Choose a plotting method that accepts those prepared values.
- Parallel series: You have corresponding values in multiple columns and want clustered or stacked bars. Gnuplot’s documented histogram styles address these column-based arrangements.
- Terminal appearance: Choose plotext for its documented colored-text terminal plots, or gnuplot’s dumb driver for text-block output with layout controls. Actual rendering can vary with terminal capabilities.
