The best publishing stack is the one your writers and maintainers can keep operating. Choose WordPress when you need a flexible CMS and contributor workflow; Ghost when publishing, newsletters, and memberships are central and you want a publishing-oriented product; or Astro when your team prefers content files and code-based builds and can own deployment. The decision is less about a universal winner than where you want the ongoing work—editing, updates, hosting, backups, and releases—to live.

What you are choosing: a workflow and a set of responsibilities

A blog stack determines more than how pages look. It determines how authors prepare and review posts, how content reaches the live site, which features are built in or added, and who handles operational work. Before comparing products, identify the people responsible for writing, publishing, and keeping the site reliable.

  • Writing workflow: Will contributors work in a browser-based CMS, or edit files and submit code changes?
  • Operations: Who owns hosting, software updates, backups, security, and deployment failures?
  • Publishing needs: Do you need editorial roles, scheduled posts, newsletters, memberships, subscriptions, or other audience features?
  • Flexibility: Do you want a broad plugin and theme ecosystem, publishing-specific built-ins, or code-level control?
  • Long-term cost: Account for hosting or managed plans, add-ons, email delivery, backups, maintenance time, and migration—not just the initial setup.

These questions help distinguish a platform that is technically capable from one your team can sustain.

How the three approaches differ

Approach How content is created and published Where it tends to fit Work the operator should expect
WordPress CMS workflow with drafts, scheduled posts, revisions, roles, and media tools Publications needing a familiar CMS, multiple contributors, varied features, or room to extend Choose and manage hosting; govern themes, plugins, updates, and configuration
Ghost Publishing-oriented platform with features its publisher describes as including SEO, newsletters, memberships, and paid subscriptions Teams prioritizing publishing and audience features over a broad, general-purpose site stack With Ghost(Pro), the service handles key infrastructure tasks; with self-hosting, the operator takes on server and maintenance work
Astro or another static-site framework Content can be stored in Markdown collections and published through a code-oriented build and deployment workflow Developer-led teams comfortable managing content as files and owning the build and release path Configure the framework and integrations, run builds, and manage deployment and provider-specific limits

The table describes different operating models, not a feature-for-feature ranking. A team’s editorial habits and available maintenance time can matter more than any individual feature.

WordPress: choose it for a flexible CMS workflow

WordPress.org documents drafts, scheduled posts, revisions, public and private content, media tools, and roles for administrators, editors, authors, contributors, and subscribers. That can suit a technical publication with several contributors, an editorial review process, or a site that needs capabilities beyond a straightforward blog. WordPress also offers themes, plugins, and importers; its documentation says users can own their content and data. See the WordPress features overview.

What you gain

  • A CMS-based publishing workflow with roles and revision history.
  • Options to extend the site with themes and plugins.
  • Import tools that may help when bringing content into WordPress.

What you take on

WordPress.org software does not, by itself, choose or operate your hosting environment. The site operator must make decisions about hosting, configuration, themes, plugins, and updates. Those choices create flexibility, but also ongoing work: decide who reviews extensions, applies updates, checks backups, and handles problems after changes.

WordPress.org licenses its software under the GPL, which permits installation, use, modification, and distribution under that license. Its feature page also displays a “more than 43% of the web” statement without a publication year; it should not be read as a dated current market-share figure.

Ghost: choose it when publishing and audience features are central

Ghost’s own comparison presents the product as focused on publishing, with built-in SEO, newsletters, memberships, and paid subscriptions. That is the vendor’s positioning, not an independent evaluation of how it compares in practice. Ghost describes WordPress as a better fit for users who need a dynamic, complex site or advanced capabilities such as ecommerce and plugin-built customizations. Review the Ghost versus WordPress comparison alongside your own requirements.

Ghost(Pro) and self-hosting move work to different places

Ghost’s official hosting guide says Ghost(Pro) and self-hosted Ghost have identical product features, while their operational responsibilities differ. Ghost(Pro) handles installation, updates, server maintenance, SSL, and backups. Self-hosting provides direct server and database access and more control over the environment, but the operator must handle manual operations and arrange separate services as needed. The distinction is control and responsibility—not a different feature set, according to Ghost’s guide. See Ghost’s hosting guide.

Do not assume self-hosting is automatically cheaper once you include time, backups, maintenance, and any separate services. Likewise, treat Ghost’s price and performance comparisons as vendor-provided and time-sensitive rather than as neutral, independently established results.

Astro: choose a code-driven workflow when your team can own deployment

Astro describes itself as “the web framework for building content-driven websites like blogs, marketing, and e-commerce.” Its documentation highlights Markdown content collections, a default of zero client-side JavaScript, optional UI framework components, and integrations. That combination can work well for developers who want content represented in files and are comfortable building and deploying the site. See Astro’s documentation on why Astro.

Astro documents deployment integrations and targets including Cloudflare, Netlify, Vercel, and GitHub Pages. GitHub Pages is one static-hosting example, not a guarantee that every host offers the same pricing, build limits, or server-side capabilities. Check the terms and technical constraints of the provider you select; GitHub documents its service at About GitHub Pages.

Account for the build and release path

A code-oriented content workflow may suit a team already comfortable with Markdown, version control, and build processes. It can be a poor match if nontechnical writers need a browser editor, if editorial review depends on CMS roles, or if nobody owns failed builds and deployment configuration. Compare frameworks and providers against your team’s familiarity, preview needs, site requirements, and expected build scale. Author-reported build-time comparisons are not general benchmarks and should not decide the choice on their own.

Compare the work, not just the feature lists

Writing and review

WordPress documents roles, revisions, and scheduled publishing, which may support a multi-author editorial workflow. Ghost is oriented toward publishing, while Astro’s documented Markdown collections suit teams prepared to work with content files. Make sure the people who will write and review posts are comfortable with the chosen interface; a technically elegant workflow is not useful if it slows publishing.

Maintenance and reliability

List who will respond when an update causes a problem, a backup needs restoring, or a deployment fails. Managed hosting can transfer some infrastructure tasks to a service; self-hosting and code-driven deployment leave more of those tasks with your team. The responsibility still needs an owner even when a provider handles part of it.

Features and customization

WordPress offers a broad theme and plugin system. Ghost emphasizes publishing-oriented features, as described by its publisher. Astro offers framework-level control and documented integrations. Start with capabilities you actually need—such as paid subscriptions, custom site behavior, or a particular content workflow—rather than selecting a stack for hypothetical future requirements.

Portability and ownership

WordPress documents importers and states that users can own their content and data. That does not, by itself, establish the exact export and migration steps for every source platform or destination. Before committing, verify how you will export posts, media, metadata, and subscriber or membership data where relevant, and whether the destination can use them.

Total cost at your intended scale

Compare the full operating cost, including a managed plan or hosting, paid extensions, email delivery, backups, maintenance time, and migration. Vendor prices and plan limits can change, so check current terms for the specific service and region before budgeting. For a self-hosted option, include the value of whoever will manage it; server rent is only one part of the cost.

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Name the authors and operators. Identify who writes, reviews, publishes, handles updates, and responds to outages. If these are different people, confirm each workflow fits them.
  2. Separate essential features from nice-to-haves. Write down required publishing, audience, and site capabilities. Verify current availability and plan limits instead of assuming a feature is included.
  3. Choose the workflow your team can sustain. Prefer a CMS if contributors need an editorial interface and roles; consider Ghost if publishing and its audience features are the focus; consider Astro if a code-based content and deployment process matches the team.
  4. Assign operational ownership. Decide explicitly who handles hosting, updates, backups, security, and deployment incidents—or what a managed service will handle.
  5. Check portability and provider terms. Confirm export and migration mechanics, hosting limits, and current plan details before moving an existing publication or making a long-term commitment.
  6. Estimate the whole cost. Add services and staff time to the budget, then reassess at the scale you expect to operate.

No one stack is best for every technical blog. WordPress is a strong candidate when an extensible CMS workflow matters; Ghost when publishing and audience features are the priority; Astro when developers want file-based content and can own builds and deployment. The right choice is the one that meets the publication’s needs without leaving essential work unowned.
