Generative coding can help developers make changes, including performance optimizations, but current evidence does not show that it reliably makes production software run faster. The difference matters: a developer can finish a coding task sooner without the resulting program having lower latency, higher throughput, or lower resource use. To know whether software is faster, measure it on the workload that matters and check that it still works correctly.

“Fast” can mean a faster developer or faster software

There are several different clocks in software work. A coding assistant may reduce the time it takes to complete a task. An optimization may reduce a program’s runtime or request latency, increase throughput, or lower memory or CPU use. A team may also deliver a change sooner without changing how quickly the software runs.

These outcomes can influence one another, but none is a substitute for another. A coding assistant that produces code quickly has not demonstrated a runtime improvement. And a shorter or more elegant implementation is not necessarily faster when executed.

  • Task completion time: how long a developer takes to finish a defined change.
  • Runtime and latency: how long a program or request takes under specified conditions.
  • Throughput: how much work the system completes over time.
  • Resource use: how much CPU, memory, storage, or network capacity the workload consumes.
  • Delivery time: how long it takes a team to get a change ready and into use.

When someone says an AI tool makes software “faster,” ask which of these they measured, on what code and workload, and whether correctness was checked.

What current studies actually establish

Evidence about coding-assistant productivity is not the same as evidence about optimized software. The studies below differ in what they measure, so their findings should not be combined into one general speedup claim.

Evidence What it measures or evaluates What it does not establish
Microsoft Research’s 2023 controlled Copilot experiment Participants implementing a JavaScript HTTP server completed the specified task 55.8% faster with Copilot than the control group, according to Microsoft Research. It did not measure whether the server produced by participants ran 55.8% faster, nor does this one task establish the same benefit for other developers or projects.
SWE-Perf, an ICML 2026 benchmark Evaluates language models on software-performance tasks in authentic repository contexts. The benchmark’s existence alone does not show that model-generated optimizations deliver dependable gains in production.
SWE-fficiency, an ICML 2026 benchmark Frames optimization around real-world workloads, runtime reduction, and preserving correctness. It is an evaluation effort, not proof that an assistant will speed up any particular application.
Systematic review published in 2025 Reviews 37 peer-reviewed studies published from January 2014 through December 2024 on developer productivity and related effects. The study count is not a pooled estimate that AI universally makes developers faster; the review reports mixed code-quality findings and concerns including cognitive offloading.
IBM Research’s CHI 2025 study of an internal watsonx Code Assistant deployment Reports surveys across two cohorts totaling 669 participants and usability testing with 15 participants, focused on developer experience and productivity. It is not a controlled benchmark of application runtime performance.

The clearest numerical result here is Microsoft Research’s 55.8% task-completion finding, and its scope is specific: a controlled experiment on a JavaScript HTTP-server coding task. It is evidence about completing that task, not evidence of faster-running output. The repository and workload benchmarks address performance optimization more directly, but their existence should not be presented as a general production speedup.

Why fast software can feel like a forgotten skill

Performance work is less about typing clever code than finding out what is actually slow. A hot function may matter; so may a database query, network round trip, lock, inefficient data structure, serialization step, or workload that overwhelms available resources. Optimizing the wrong part can add complexity without improving the user-visible result.

That makes performance engineering a loop: define the outcome, observe the system, identify a bottleneck, change one thing, then measure again. Generative coding can assist with parts of that loop—such as explaining a profile, suggesting a narrower implementation, or drafting a change—but it cannot make a measurement meaningful if the workload is unrepresentative or the baseline is missing.

Performance analysis also benefits from disciplined profiling, tracing, and benchmarking. Systems Performance, Second Edition by Brendan Gregg is a practical reference for those topics; it is a systems-performance book, not a guide to generative AI coding.

A practical way to use generative coding for optimization

  1. Define the target. State whether the goal is lower p95 request latency, higher throughput, less memory use, or another observable outcome. Specify the workload and operating conditions that matter.
  2. Establish a baseline. Run the relevant benchmark or representative workload before changing code. Record the environment and result so the comparison has a reference point.
  3. Find the bottleneck. Use appropriate profiling or tracing to locate the cost that limits the target. Avoid asking an assistant to optimize a whole codebase when evidence points to one operation or path.
  4. Ask for a scoped proposal. Give the assistant the relevant code and constraints. Ask it to explain the expected effect and trade-offs of a specific change, rather than merely requesting “faster code.”
  5. Review and verify behavior. Inspect the diff for assumptions, edge cases, security implications, and maintainability. Run the relevant tests and correctness checks before treating a performance result as useful.
  6. Compare under the same conditions. Run the same workload against the changed version in a comparable environment. Keep the change only if the result improves the target without breaking required behavior.
  7. Report the result precisely. State what changed, which workload and conditions were used, which metric moved, and whether correctness checks passed. Do not turn one benchmark result into a promise about every deployment.

This is a measurement discipline consistent with how repository-level optimization benchmarks frame runtime and correctness. It is practical guidance, not a claim that this exact workflow has been experimentally proven to produce a particular speedup.

Why coding speed is not only about code generation

Google’s developer-productivity analysis identifies code quality, technical debt, infrastructure and support, team communication, goals and priorities, and organizational change or process as factors linked to perceived productivity in its study context. That is a useful counterweight to the idea that a faster code generator alone determines how quickly a team delivers dependable software.

An assistant may help with a local coding task while unresolved technical debt, slow build systems, unclear priorities, or difficult review processes remain the larger constraint. Conversely, generating a change faster can shift work into review, debugging, or maintenance if the code is difficult to understand. The systematic review’s mixed findings on code quality and discussion of cognitive offloading are reasons to preserve human review and understanding, not reasons to assume every assistant-assisted change is harmful.

So, can generative coding fix slow software?

It can be a useful participant in performance work, and current benchmarks are testing models on optimization in real repositories and workloads. But the evidence described here does not support a blanket claim that generative coding reliably makes production software faster. Treat an assistant’s optimization as a hypothesis: identify the bottleneck, preserve correctness, and accept the change only when a relevant before-and-after measurement supports it.
