Android’s Notification History can help you recover an alert you accidentally dismissed. On Pixel, turn it on at Settings > Notifications > Notification history; once enabled, it keeps dismissed notifications from the last 24 hours. You must enable the feature before dismissing an alert—turning it on later won’t bring back older notifications. Google’s Pixel instructions explain the feature and how to use it.
Turn on Notification History on your phone
Google Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications > Notification history.
- Turn on Use notification history.
To revisit saved alerts, return to that screen. You can also open the notification shade, scroll to the bottom, and tap History. Tap a listed notification to open the app it came from. Google’s Pixel guide documents this path and behavior.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s published path is Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. Turn on the feature there. It records notifications going forward; if the list is empty, check again after new notifications arrive. Available screens can vary by model, software version, and carrier. See Samsung’s instructions.
Other Android phones
Look under Settings > Notifications, or search Settings for Notification history. Some Android devices do not include this feature, and menu names or locations can vary. Android Help notes these device differences.

What the 24-hour limit means
Google says Pixel phones keep dismissed notifications from the last 24 hours when Notification History is on. In Android’s open-source documentation, 24 hours is the default retention period, but device makers can change it. So the Pixel guidance is specific to Pixel; do not assume every Android phone uses exactly the same retention period.
Notification History is not a recovery tool for alerts dismissed before the feature was enabled. It also does not guarantee that every app’s notification will appear on every device; availability and implementation depend on the phone.

What happens if you turn it off
In the Android Open Source Project implementation, turning Notification History off deletes all saved history and stops logging new notifications. If you want to keep using the feature, leave it enabled. The AOSP page, last updated June 17, 2026, describes the default retention and this behavior: Notification history.
