For Windows Update for Business reports and Intune’s Windows feature update compatibility reports, devices must send at least Required Windows diagnostic data (formerly Basic). Enhanced on Windows 10 and Optional on Windows 11 are recommended, not required. Intune feature update reports also depend on tenant-level Windows data collection. Device names have a separate privacy control, so enabling diagnostic data does not by itself make names appear.
What Windows update reports show in Intune
Intune’s feature update compatibility reports use Windows diagnostic data to help assess devices before an organization deploys a selected Windows version. They answer different questions:

These insights are specific to the target Windows version. Select the same version the organization intends to deploy; findings for another target may not describe the planned rollout. See Microsoft’s feature update compatibility reports guidance.
Which Windows diagnostic data level is required?
The minimum is Required diagnostic data. Microsoft’s prerequisites say: “At minimum, Windows Update for Business reports requires devices to send diagnostic data at the Required level (previously Basic).” Enhanced on Windows 10 and Optional on Windows 11 are recommended levels, not prerequisites for report operation.

That distinction matters: raising every device to Optional is not necessary just to make reports work. Set the level that meets your organization’s reporting needs and privacy requirements. Microsoft documents the applicable Windows versions and levels in its Windows Update for Business reports prerequisites.
Device names use a separate setting
Even when a device sends the required diagnostic data, its name does not appear unless an administrator separately opts in to device-name collection. Microsoft documents the System/AllowDeviceNameInDiagnosticData CSP and the corresponding Group Policy setting under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Review the privacy implications with your organization before enabling it; do not treat name collection as a requirement for diagnostic reporting.

Set up both the device and tenant prerequisites
Useful reporting depends on more than the endpoint data level. The broader Windows Update for Business reports service requires service enrollment in an Azure subscription, an Azure Log Analytics workspace, and configured clients that send data. Microsoft lists Intune, scripts, and manual configuration as client-configuration methods in its service configuration guidance.
For Intune feature update reporting specifically, Microsoft also identifies tenant-level Windows data collection as a prerequisite, distinct from the diagnostic-data level configured on each device. Check that this tenant setting is enabled for the applicable Intune feature. The exact admin-center navigation and current control label are not specified here, so consult Microsoft’s Intune Windows update reports troubleshooting guidance rather than relying on an assumed menu path.

Generate and read a device readiness report
- In the Intune admin center, go to Reports > Device management > Windows updates > Reports.
- Choose the Windows feature update device readiness report and select the target OS version that matches the planned deployment.
- Choose scope tags and, if useful, refine the report by ownership or readiness status.
- Generate the report. It is on-demand; data is not displayed until a report has been generated.
- Review readiness states and issue counts, then open a device’s details to inspect its reported system, app, or driver issues.
Readiness statuses can include Low risk, Medium risk, High risk, Replace device, Upgraded, and Unknown. Unknown means readiness could not be determined; it is not a finding that the device is compatible or incompatible. Check its diagnostic-data configuration and reporting eligibility.
A generated report is cached per user. Other Intune users do not automatically see the same generated report, so each user may need to generate it in their own session.

Why Windows update reports may show no data or Unknown
For a missing device or an Unknown status, work through these checks in order:
- Confirm device eligibility and join state. The service supports Entra joined and hybrid joined devices; workplace-joined-only devices are unsupported. The prerequisites page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 Professional, Education, Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session editions, but also notes a known issue in which Enterprise multi-session data may not display.
- Verify the device diagnostic-data level. Set it to at least Required. Enhanced on Windows 10 or Optional on Windows 11 is not required merely to meet the reporting minimum.
- Check tenant-level Windows data collection. Intune feature update reports require this in addition to device-level diagnostic data collection.
- Check connectivity and configuration. Confirm the required diagnostic-data service endpoints are reachable. Microsoft also warns that disabling services configuration/OneSettings can lead to incorrect or missing client data; consult the prerequisites and endpoint details.
- Allow time for upload and processing. Devices typically upload diagnostic data once per day, and it is processed in batches. Microsoft states a maximum end-to-end latency of approximately 52 hours for these compatibility reports; this is a documented maximum, not a guarantee that every device will appear at a particular time. Details are in Microsoft’s report documentation.
Applicability limits to check
- Windows Update for Business reports is not a reporting solution for Windows Server, Surface Hub, or IoT devices.
- The service is available in Azure Commercial cloud and is not available for GCC High or US Department of Defense customers.
- Although Enterprise multi-session appears among the listed editions, Microsoft identifies a known issue where its data may not display.
