findmypylibrary is a Python command-line tool designed to answer a practical question: “I need to do X in Python. Which package?” Its author’s engineering log describes how the project evolved from a metadata search prototype into a locally queried PyPI package finder, and what its tests, data pipeline, and failures did—and did not—establish. The account is a first-person report by vapmail16, published on Dev.to on September 20, 2026 and presented by WPS; project decisions and figures below are attributed to that log, not independently reproduced.

What findmypylibrary is meant to do

The tool accepts a task description such as “fuzzy string matching” and returns a ranked shortlist of PyPI packages. The log says results include download counts and last-release dates, giving users clues about adoption and maintenance rather than presenting a recommendation without context. Its stated aim is to ground suggestions in package data instead of a language model’s remembered knowledge.

The design described in the log has three practical constraints: after a local data snapshot is available, queries run offline; query text stays on the user’s machine; and the tool does not require an API key, an account, or heavy dependencies. The published package listing is available on PyPI.

How the data gets into the local search

From a broad package list to package metadata

The initial plan combined the periodically rebuilt hugovk/top-pypi-packages dataset, a list of highly downloaded packages, with package summaries and release dates from PyPI’s JSON API. The log says an attempt to retrieve the dataset through one route returned HTML after a redirect, so the author switched to its raw GitHub URL. The implementation stored data in SQLite and fetched package metadata asynchronously with bounded concurrency.

A 15,000-row package list implied 15,000 metadata requests for a full crawl. In the first full run, the author reports retrieving metadata for 14,999 of the 15,000 packages; one package had been delisted and returned a genuine 404. For that crawl, the log says an async semaphore capped requests at 25 concurrent connections. These are figures from the project’s account, not a current inventory of PyPI or a measurement reproduced independently.

Why the project moved to a shared snapshot

Having each user perform the full crawl would mean many clients independently making a large set of requests to a public service. The log says the author replaced that as the routine path with a centrally built snapshot, published as a GitHub Release asset by a scheduled GitHub Actions workflow. A normal refresh downloads the snapshot; --build-locally is the opt-in route for building from the package list directly.

Refresh route What it does Trade-off described in the log
Download the published snapshot Fetches a centrally built database for local use. Reduces routine crawl requests from each user, but the snapshot depends on the publisher’s build and release schedule.
--build-locally Crawls package metadata on the user’s machine. Gives the user direct control over building the data, at the cost of a large number of requests and a slower full crawl.

The log also describes a 45-day staleness warning as a safeguard and notes that scheduled GitHub workflows may pause after 60 days without repository activity. Those details matter because a shared snapshot is efficient only while its build and publication pipeline remains active. The author says the normal workflow should make the initial data acquisition easy, but does not claim that the snapshot is always current.

How the search and ranking changed

First ranking: combine relevance, popularity, and recency

The first ranker used pure-Python BM25 over package names, summaries, and keywords. It then blended relevance with popularity and recency using min-max normalized component scores:

score = 0.60 * relevance + 0.25 * popularity + 0.15 * recency

The log says early examples looked successful, but ordinary natural-language task queries exposed a weakness: a popular package with keyword-heavy metadata could outrank a better semantic match. The equation also risks making a high popularity or recency score compensate for weak relevance.

Relevance gating to control popular false matches

The next approach treated relevance as a gate. It kept candidates within 50% of the best relevance match, then primarily sorted those survivors by popularity. That design made popularity useful for ordering plausible candidates without letting it rescue an otherwise poor text match. It can, however, favor common choices among the candidates that pass the gate, so the quality of the lexical match still determines which packages are eligible.

FTS5 and richer searchable text

The later design used SQLite FTS5 with Porter stemming and Unicode tokenization. Instead of relying only on package names, summaries, and keywords, it indexed topics and cleaned README excerpts as well. The log says README text was kept contentless in the FTS table to limit storage, while core package fields were scored separately from description text to reduce noise from incidental README wording.

Search design What it adds Important trade-off
Pure-Python BM25 Search across package name, summary, and keywords with a lightweight implementation. Has a narrow text scope and the initial blended ranking could let popularity or recency inflate weak matches.
SQLite FTS5 Stemming and Unicode-aware indexing across core metadata, topics, and cleaned README excerpts. README text expands recall but can introduce irrelevant matches; the log says core fields and README descriptions were scored separately to contain that effect.

The log reports that a broad rule for adjacent-word compounds reduced the permanent query suite from 89 of 95 passing to 84 of 95, so the author rejected it and retained a curated set of four compounds. That is a useful example of resisting a seemingly general text-processing improvement when it worsened the measured query set.

What the query tests show—and what they do not

The author’s evaluation grew as the search changed. The FTS baseline reportedly passed 37 of 40 everyday “golden” queries. The author later added 25 fresh validation queries and ultimately described a permanent suite of 95 queries, with 90 passing. Of 55 queries not used for tuning, 49 reportedly passed on their first validation run. The log says this untouched-query figure—about 89%—is more representative than the overall tuned score.

Reported evaluation Result in vapmail16’s 2026 engineering log How to read it
Initial FTS golden set 37 of 40 queries passed Baseline after adding the FTS index.
Final permanent query set 90 of 95 queries passed Includes queries used while iterating on the system.
Previously untuned queries 49 of 55 passed on first run A better indication of generalization within this author-created query corpus, but still a small, project-specific evaluation.

These pass rates are the author’s reported results, not an independent benchmark or proof that the tool will find the package a particular user considers correct. The log acknowledges a lexical-matching limitation: for example, numpy may not appear for the query “linear algebra.” The author estimates that roughly one in ten searches might fail to show a package a user would consider right, but that estimate belongs to this project account, not a measured rate for all PyPI searches.

Testing, safeguards, and the boundaries of verification

Tests and platform coverage

At the end of the log, the author reports 135 tests and 97% code coverage. The account also describes testing on unseen queries, multiple operating systems, and multiple Python versions as part of the iterative process. These figures and testing statements are project-reported; they do not establish that every real-world query, platform, or future release behaves identically.

Rate limits and live-service caution

The author says handling of HTTP 429 rate-limit responses was tested with mocks, not by forcing a real PyPI rate limit. That restraint avoids deliberately provoking a public service, but leaves live 429 behavior unverified in the described testing. The first crawl’s one 404 is a different case: the log identifies it as a delisted package, not a rate-limit failure.

Cache protection and publishing safeguards

The account recounts a reviewer running a refresh command against the real cache despite an instruction not to, with no lasting data loss reported. The lesson the author draws is operational: instructions are not a security boundary. If a resource must be protected, isolate it so the program or reviewer cannot reach it, rather than relying on a warning alone.

The same engineering-log theme appears in the project’s publishing safeguards: workflows should be tested rather than assumed to work, and snapshot replacement should not put the existing usable data at risk. The log summarizes one lesson as “A workflow you edited and did not run is an untested program.” That is the author’s phrasing and experience, not an independently audited incident report.

Reported performance and currentness limits

The log’s closing summary describes a snapshot of 14,999 packages with a download size of 10.8 MB. It also reports reducing invocation time from 0.30 seconds to about 0.15 seconds by lazily importing the HTTP stack. Those are figures reported by vapmail16 in 2026; the account does not specify a standardized benchmark setup, and they should not be treated as reproducible guarantees for another machine or later version.

Package popularity and last-release dates are time-sensitive metadata, and the example values in the engineering account are snapshots rather than current measurements. The article does not establish the present freshness of the released snapshot, the current status of the scheduled workflow, or the accuracy of every package record. A user should interpret the tool’s results as a useful shortlist grounded in its downloaded data, not as a definitive or continuously live catalog.

What the engineering log demonstrates

The project account is most useful as a case study in turning a narrow command-line idea into a system with explicit data and ranking trade-offs. The notable decisions are concrete: replace repetitive full crawls with a shared snapshot; separate relevance from popularity when sorting; expand search text cautiously; and compare tuned queries with an untouched set. Its reported pass rates show both progress and a remaining miss rate, while its acknowledged lexical limitation explains why a package finder built on text matching can fail even when the right library exists.

For readers considering the package, the design promises a local, offline query experience after data download, but the results depend on the package snapshot and lexical index. For developers building similar tools, the account’s strongest lesson is methodological: define user-visible expectations, validate on queries not used during tuning, and treat operational safeguards and live-service behavior as separate from passing unit tests.
