Check the rating used in the market where you are buying the game, read its content descriptors, and separately review online features, spending options, and parental controls. The age mark is a starting point—not a complete description of everything a game contains or lets players do.
What PEGI and ESRB ratings tell you
PEGI (Pan European Game Information) and ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) assign age-guidance labels and provide information about content. A label is intended to help consumers make a suitability decision; it does not measure how difficult a game is, whether a particular child will enjoy it, or whether every family will consider its content acceptable.
PEGI says its system is used and recognized throughout Europe. ESRB labels appear on physical games as well as digital games and apps. Digital storefronts may use a ratings process administered by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), of which ESRB is a founding rating authority. The rating a shopper encounters therefore depends in part on the market and format: check the package or storefront listing for the game you are considering. PEGI explains its labels here; ESRB provides its ratings guide here; and IARC describes its digital-ratings system here.
How the age categories compare
The systems use different category names and criteria. Similar-looking age numbers can be a rough prompt to investigate further, but they do not make two ratings interchangeable. There is no reliable one-to-one conversion such as “PEGI 12 equals ESRB Teen.”

| System | Age categories | How to read them |
|---|---|---|
| PEGI | PEGI 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18 | Each label indicates the minimum age category PEGI considers appropriate, based on its criteria and the game’s content. |
| ESRB | Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature 17+ and Adults Only 18+ | These categories give age guidance under ESRB’s criteria. Rating Pending is a temporary promotional notice, not a final category. |
PEGI describes PEGI 3 as suitable for all ages. PEGI 7 may allow potentially frightening material or very mild violence. PEGI 12 can include somewhat more graphic fantasy or non-realistic violence and mild sexual innuendo. PEGI 16 covers violence or sexual activity approaching real-life depiction and can include stronger language or substance use. PEGI 18 is for adult-level material such as gross violence, glamorized illegal drugs, simulated gambling, or explicit sexual activity. These are broad descriptions, not an exhaustive checklist for every title. See PEGI’s explanations of its age labels.
ESRB defines Everyone as generally suitable for all ages, Everyone 10+ for ages 10 and up, Teen for ages 13 and up, Mature for ages 17 and up, and Adults Only for ages 18 and up. Rating Pending means a final ESRB rating has not yet been assigned. ESRB limits that mark to promotional contexts for a physical game expected to receive an ESRB rating; it should not be treated as an age recommendation. The definitions are in the ESRB Ratings Guide.

How to use content descriptors
The age category is a summary signal. Descriptors explain content that may have contributed to the rating or may matter to consumers, but they are not guaranteed to inventory every element in a game. Read the definitions from the system that issued the label: the same descriptor word does not necessarily mean the same threshold or rating outcome in PEGI and ESRB.
PEGI descriptors
PEGI uses descriptors for topics including violence, bad language, fear or horror, gambling, sex, drugs, and discrimination. The meaning depends on the age category and context. For example, PEGI distinguishes gambling themes, which may appear at PEGI 12, from simulated casino-style gambling, which is associated with PEGI 18. PEGI’s descriptor explanations give more context.

ESRB descriptors
ESRB’s descriptors include terms such as Violence, Blood, Blood and Gore, Fantasy Violence, Intense Violence, Language, Strong Language, Gambling Themes, Real Gambling, Simulated Gambling, Sexual Content, Sexual Violence, Suggestive Themes, and substance references or use. Their application is relative to the assigned category, and ESRB cautions that descriptors are not intended as a complete listing of content. For definitions, consult the ESRB guide.
Online features and spending need a separate check
A game’s age category does not by itself tell you everything about online communication, player-created content, or purchases. The systems handle these features differently, so do not treat their labels as a shared scale.

ESRB Interactive Elements
ESRB uses separate Interactive Elements notices for features such as in-game purchases (including random items), interaction between users, location sharing, and unrestricted internet access. ESRB says these notices highlight features that may interest or concern consumers but do not influence the rating assignment. See the ESRB Ratings Guide.
PEGI interactive risks and recent purchase rules
PEGI describes interactive-risk information including in-game purchases, paid random items, time-limited offers, cryptocurrency-related features, pressure to play, and unrestricted communication. Its official page says certain purchase and communication features affect age ratings under rules effective since June 2026. For submissions since that date, PEGI describes paid random items as PEGI 16, or PEGI 18 for social casino games; time-limited offers can result in PEGI 12, with a stated parental-control condition allowing PEGI 7; and unrestricted communication without blocking or muting and moderation is rated PEGI 18. These are recent, specific rules—not a general conversion to ESRB. Check PEGI’s current label guidance when evaluating a particular title.

A practical checklist for choosing a game
- Identify the local rating. Use the label shown on the package or in the storefront for the market where you are buying or downloading the game.
- Use the age category as a first screen. Treat it as age-suitability guidance, not a difficulty rating or a promise that the content will suit every child.
- Read each descriptor. Look up unfamiliar terms in the issuing system’s guide. Where available, read the detailed rating summary; ESRB provides summaries for many physical games.
- Check interactive features separately. Look for online communication, user-generated content, location sharing, unrestricted internet access, in-game purchases, and any random-item or time-limited purchase mechanics.
- Set platform or device controls to match your family’s needs. Rating labels inform the decision; parental controls can help manage access and play features. PEGI provides parental-control information, while ESRB’s guide explains its labels and summaries.
Ratings are about content, not difficulty
An age-appropriate game can still be too challenging for a younger player, while a simple game can carry an adult rating because of its content. PEGI explicitly says its rating considers age suitability, not the level of difficulty. Consider gameplay complexity separately from the age label.
How much weight should you give the ratings?
Ratings are most useful as a consistent first filter, followed by the specific content details and interactive features that matter to your household. In the United States, ESRB reports that 83% of parents with children who play video games are aware of ESRB ratings and 77% regularly check them before buying, citing Hart Research Associates in 2025. Those are ESRB-reported U.S. figures; they are not a comparison with PEGI and do not establish how often European parents use PEGI. ESRB’s 2025 figures are published here.
