Check entitlement inside the Forge resolver, before it reads or changes protected data, and base that decision on trusted resolver-side context and the app’s actual entitlement policy. Then test an unentitled request and assert the app’s real denial behavior or that the protected operation was never called. A useful regression test must fail if the authorization gate is removed.

Where the entitlement check belongs

Forge resolvers are backend functions called by UI Kit or Custom UI. Their documented callback receives a request containing payload and context. Put the authorization decision in that backend path, before protected reads, writes, external calls, or other side effects. A hidden button or disabled UI control is not a substitute for server-side enforcement.

First identify the entitlement source and policy the app already uses. Do not decide entitlement from client-supplied payload, UI visibility, or browser-modifiable context. The resolver should use trusted server-side information and the app’s real policy to determine whether the caller may perform the operation.

Choose trustworthy entitlement evidence

Custom UI resolver context

Atlassian’s App context security guidance says that context parameters in each resolver function are secure, unalterable, and valid for authorization. This statement is specifically given for Custom UI resolver context. The same guidance warns against using contextual information from the bridge getContext API for authorization because browser code can modify it.

Forge license context is not a universal entitlement check

The Forge resolver reference documents accountId, accountType, and an optional license field in resolver context. It says license is present only for paid apps in production; it is undefined for free apps, apps not listed on the Marketplace, and development or staging environments. Do not treat its presence as guaranteed, or assume it fully represents the app’s feature-level entitlement policy. Use it only if it is actually the correct input to that policy.

Types do not enforce access control

Type-safe resolver definitions can catch some interface mistakes during development, but they do not validate authorization at runtime. Atlassian explicitly warns that type safety is not a security mechanism, including when another part of the application or a third-party library uses type overrides such as any. Validate sensitive data and enforce entitlement separately.

Implement the gate before protected behavior

The authorization branch should be the first meaningful decision in the resolver for a protected action. Return the project’s established denial result—or use its established error behavior—when the caller is not entitled. Only the permitted branch should reach the protected operation.

  1. Find the app’s existing entitlement source and determine which resolver operation it governs.
  2. Read the caller and other required authorization inputs from trusted resolver-side context and the app’s entitlement service or policy—not from client-controlled fields.
  3. Evaluate entitlement before protected data access, mutation, external requests, or side effects.
  4. For an unentitled caller, return the denial behavior the app already documents or expects. Avoid revealing protected data in the denial path.
  5. Allow the protected operation only after the entitlement check succeeds.

The exact return value, exception type, or status is app-specific; neither the resolver reference nor the title establishes a universal denial contract. Preserve the app’s existing contract rather than inventing a new one in the test.

Test the resolver’s security property

A regression test should invoke the resolver path with an unentitled caller and demonstrate both the intended denial and, where practical, that protected behavior did not occur. The assertion must be tied to the real denial contract or to a spy/mock around the protected operation. A test that merely checks an unrelated response or confirms the resolver ran does not prove the gate works.

Exercise the entry point when practical

An example in the Atlassian Developer Community discussion about resolver tests invokes a handler with a functionKey and context:

await handler({ call: { functionKey: 'getText' }, context: req });

Adapt that shape to the resolver version and test runner installed in the project. Calling the registered handler exercises more of the resolver entry path. If the harness makes that impractical, export the resolver function and test its authorization and protected-operation behavior directly.

Assert denial and absence of protected work

Use the denial assertion that matches the app. If it returns a value, compare that value with the established response; if it rejects or throws, assert the established error behavior. Also verify the protected operation was not called, especially when a response alone could be produced by code that still performed the protected action.

// Illustrative structure: substitute the app's real context, denial contract, and operation mock.
const result = await invokeResolverWith(unentitledContext);

expect(result).toEqual(expectedDenial);
expect(protectedOperation).not.toHaveBeenCalled();

This is pseudocode, not a framework-specific drop-in test. Match the project’s actual harness, context shape, denial contract, and mock strategy. If the app’s contract is an exception rather than a returned denial, assert that exception and still verify the operation was not reached.

Make sure the regression test catches a missing gate

Check the test’s logic against the failure it is meant to prevent: if the entitlement check were removed or bypassed, would the unentitled request reach the protected operation or fail the denial assertion? If not, the test does not guard the gate. A useful suite also retains a permitted-caller test when the project already covers the success path, so the authorization change does not accidentally block entitled use.

  • Use an explicitly unentitled test fixture; do not rely on a client-hidden control to create the condition.
  • Assert the app’s actual denial behavior, not an invented universal Forge response.
  • Verify the protected operation is not called for the unentitled case.
  • Where present, keep a permitted-caller test that proves the protected operation still runs on the allowed path.

What the sources establish—and what the app must decide

Atlassian’s documentation establishes the resolver request’s payload and context, the Custom UI resolver context trust guidance, the limits of the optional license field, and the fact that type safety is not security enforcement. The community example offers a direct handler-testing pattern. None establishes this app’s entitlement provider, denial response, resolver module version, or test framework. Those specifics must come from the project’s implementation and policy.
