As of a March 2017 report, the Pentagon’s Wi-Fi project team had installed 1,500 access points—but that historical figure is not a current count. The deployment was not simply a matter of placing routers around a large building: the team had to navigate the Pentagon, win approval for wireless service, and provide different access and monitoring arrangements in a security-sensitive workplace.
How many Wi-Fi access points were reported at the Pentagon?
Network World reported on March 1, 2017, that the project team had installed 1,500 access points. Its account quoted Brendan DeBow, a Defense Engineering, Inc. program manager identified as charged with the project. The figure describes the installation as reported at that time; it is not a verified current total, nor does it establish that every part of the Pentagon received the same Wi-Fi coverage.
The report described the Pentagon as covering 6.5 million square feet. That scale helps explain the challenge, but the building’s area should not be read as a claim that wireless service was available uniformly throughout it. Network World’s March 1, 2017 account is the source for these project details.
Why did installation take so long?
Navigating the building was part of the work
DeBow said it took two years to install 68 access points, describing that pace as an indication of how difficult it could be to navigate the site. The figure is a project manager’s reported example from the interview, not a general installation rate or an independently audited measure.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Approval and acceptance mattered too
DeBow said decision-makers initially associated Wi-Fi with home use and considered it insecure. He argued for bringing wireless use under controlled network management rather than leaving unmanaged wireless activity outside the architecture. That is his rationale as reported in the interview, not an independent security assessment of the system.
How did the design account for security?
Different users could have different levels of access
DeBow described four or five service capability levels and four authentication protocol types. The reporting does not spell out what each level or protocol provided, so the figures should not be treated as a complete description of the network’s security policy.

The system was supplied by Aruba, and the account says ClearPass enabled user segmentation into granular access levels with fewer additional SSIDs. DeBow cautioned that 15 separate SSIDs could impose physical limitations and constrain throughput, affecting user experience. The article does not identify access-point models, detailed specifications, or a current equipment list.
Some access points monitored areas where service was prohibited
Wi-Fi service was not permitted in many sensitive areas, according to the report. In many of those locations, access points configured for wireless intrusion detection (WIDS) were used to detect rogue access points and other wireless attackers. Monitoring coverage and user Wi-Fi service are distinct: the presence of a WIDS-configured access point does not mean ordinary Wi-Fi was enabled in those spaces.

What the Pentagon example can—and cannot—show
The 2017 account illustrates several design questions that also matter to large organizations: how to segment access and authenticate users, where wireless service is allowed, where monitoring is needed instead, and how the number of SSIDs affects capacity and usability. It does not establish that the same vendor or architecture is right for every organization, or that the Pentagon’s reported design remains in use.
CIO Dive summarized the same reporting on March 2, 2017, including the figures for service levels and authentication types. Because it summarizes the Network World account rather than providing an independent current status check, it is corroboration of what was reported then—not evidence of today’s Pentagon network. CIO Dive’s March 2, 2017 summary provides that contemporaneous recap.

Is the Pentagon still using this Wi-Fi system?
The two cited reports are from March 2017. They do not establish whether the Pentagon still uses the described Aruba and ClearPass system, whether it has since been upgraded, or how many access points are installed now. A current count or system description should not be inferred from the 2017 account.
