To craft one book in Minecraft, combine 3 paper and 1 leather in a crafting grid. You can arrange the ingredients in any open slots; use the in-game recipe book if your crafting interface differs.
What you need to craft a book
- 3 paper
- 1 leather
Minecraft’s official paper guide gives these quantities for the book recipe. Crafting 3 sugar cane produces the 3 paper needed for one book.
How to craft a book, step by step
- Get paper. Place 3 sugar cane in a crafting grid to make 3 paper. Paper can also be found in some shipwrecks, strongholds, and village cartographer chests, according to Minecraft’s paper guide.
- Get 1 leather. Leather is the other ingredient. Its acquisition details can vary with your edition and gameplay; check the in-game recipe guide for current, edition-specific guidance.
- Open a crafting grid. Use the grid in your inventory or at a crafting table. Minecraft’s crafting guide explains that the recipe book can show required ingredients and highlight missing supplies.
- Make the book. Put the 3 paper and 1 leather into the grid, then collect the book from the result slot. The ingredients do not have substitutions, so use the recipe book if the recipe is not appearing.
Use the in-game recipe book if the interface differs
The recipe book is available in your inventory or at a crafting table; Java Edition also makes it available at the furnace and smoker. Select a recipe to see its required supplies in the grid. Missing ingredients are highlighted, which can help distinguish an incomplete recipe from an interface or edition difference. Recipes do not accept substitute ingredients, as Minecraft notes in its crafting guide.
What you can do with a book
Make a book and quill
Combine a book with a feather and ink to make a book and quill. Minecraft says ink is most easily obtained from a squid. Its book and quill article reports different writing limits by edition: Java Edition supports up to 100 pages with 1,023 characters per page; Bedrock Edition supports up to 50 pages with 256 characters per page.

Craft a regular bookshelf
A regular bookshelf requires 6 planks and 3 books. It enhances nearby enchanting tables, according to Minecraft’s bookshelf article.
Use a chiseled bookshelf for storage
A chiseled bookshelf is a different block: it is made from 6 planks and 3 wooden slabs and stores up to 6 books. Unlike a regular bookshelf, it does not increase enchanting-table power. Minecraft’s bookshelf coverage distinguishes the two blocks by their recipes and functions.
