What changed in the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s finishes?
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with Black, Silver, Glacier, and an all-new Burgundy finish. Apple says the back glass is color-matched. In its September 2026 review, Tom’s Guide also noted that the camera plateau and back glass are more closely matched than on the previous generation. That makes the rear surface read as a more coordinated design, though the appearance still depends on lighting and viewing conditions.
The Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display; the smaller iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch display. Apple’s official names apply to both models, but this comparison is about the Pro Max.

The descriptions below are preference cues, not a durability, resale, or popularity ranking. Apple confirms the finish names; the more specific color impressions are subjective.

Which iPhone 18 Pro Max color should you buy?
For a neutral look, choose between Black and Silver: Black is the darker option, while Silver is the lighter one. If you want a more distinctive finish, consider Glacier or Burgundy. That grouping is an editorial way to frame the choices from their names and descriptions, not a measured buyer-preference result.
If you expect to keep the phone in an opaque case, the back finish will be less visible in everyday use. A clear case leaves more of the phone’s color on show; a colored case changes the overall look. Apple announced color-coordinated MagSafe cases for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but check the exact model compatibility and current availability before buying an accessory.

How to compare the colors fairly
Photos and display previews can help narrow your choices, but they are not a dependable color-accuracy test. Lighting, camera settings, image processing, screen calibration, and the display you are using can all affect how a finish appears. If you can see the phone in person, look at it under more than one kind of light.
- Compare all four finishes in the same scene and lighting, rather than relying on photos taken under different conditions.
- Look at both the back glass and camera plateau to judge how their tones work together.
- Check whether an image is an Apple render, a reviewer’s photo, or a buyer’s own photo; promotional images and edited pictures should not be treated as color standards.
- Consider the case you plan to use. A clear case shows more of the finish; an opaque one obscures it.

At announcement on September 9, 2026, Apple listed the iPhone 18 Pro Max at a U.S. starting price of $1,299, with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage configurations.
