You cannot prevent architectural drift with a prompt file alone. Treat Cursor and GitHub Copilot like contributors: give them concise, version-controlled project constraints, ask for bounded changes, inspect the complete diff, and run your normal checks before merging. Keep Git recovery available, limit access to sensitive files, and account for files AI review may skip.
Start with the architecture your codebase already has
Before adding assistant instructions, identify how the project is organized today. Find the modules that own key responsibilities, representative implementations the team considers canonical, and the commands used for tests, linting, type checks, and builds. Point the assistant to those examples rather than asking it to invent an architecture.
Write down concrete expectations: which module owns a responsibility, which pattern to follow, what tests a change needs, and what command verifies it. If conventions differ by directory, make the guidance specific to that path instead of imposing one rule across the whole repository.
Choose where instructions live
Both products support repository-based guidance, but their product-specific files have different scopes. Use shared project documentation for conventions that should survive a tool change, then add short product-specific instructions only when a tool needs its own configuration. That avoids maintaining several long, divergent rulebooks; it is a practical approach, not a vendor guarantee.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Approach | Where it lives | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor project rules | .cursor/rules |
Product-specific project guidance. Cursor also documents AGENTS.md support for standing guidance shared across supported agents. Its legacy .cursorrules file is deprecated. Cursor: Rules; Cursor: AGENTS.md; Cursor: Rules for AI. |
| Copilot repository instructions | .github/copilot-instructions.md |
Repository-wide instructions for Copilot. GitHub: Repository custom instructions. |
| Copilot path-specific instructions | .github/instructions/**/*.instructions.md |
Guidance limited to matching paths, useful when directories have different conventions. GitHub: Repository custom instructions. |
Shared AGENTS.md |
Repository guidance file | A portable option documented by both Cursor and GitHub for cross-agent instructions. Exact behavior can depend on current product versions. Cursor: AGENTS.md; GitHub: Repository custom instructions. |
GitHub also documents task-specific skills: reusable workflows invoked when relevant to a task, rather than standing instructions for every change. See GitHub: Creating Copilot skills.
Write rules that change decisions
A useful instruction is specific enough to guide an implementation or review. For example, identify the existing module responsible for a behavior, link or name a representative file, say which layer should not absorb that responsibility, and state the test or command required for a change. Avoid vague requests such as “write clean code” unless they are backed by the project’s actual conventions.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Keep rules concise and add them when a repeated failure shows what is missing. Cursor’s documentation puts it plainly: “Start simple. Add rules only when you notice Agent making the same mistake repeatedly.” Cursor: Rules
Ask for changes small enough to review
- For a substantial feature or refactor, ask for a plan first. Have the assistant name the likely files to change, the existing patterns to preserve, and any behavior or interfaces at risk. Planning helps expose a mismatched approach early; it does not guarantee a sound result.
- Bound the implementation. Request one coherent behavior change at a time. Ask for behavior-preserving refactoring when the task is about structure, rather than mixing cleanup with unrequested behavior changes.
- Inspect the complete diff. Look for new abstractions without a clear need, duplicated logic, misplaced responsibilities, changed public behavior, unrequested files, and generated configuration edits.
- Run the project’s checks. Execute relevant tests, linting, type checks, and builds using the project’s documented commands. Do not treat an assistant’s summary or a successful patch application as verification.
Martin Fowler and Kent Beck’s Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code, Second Edition is a general refactoring reference, not a Cursor or Copilot manual. Fowler describes refactoring as a sequence of small, behavior-preserving transformations intended to reduce error risk. The publisher lists the second edition at 448 pages; its examples use JavaScript, while the techniques apply across languages.

Keep recovery and sensitive-file boundaries in place
Cursor’s agent can edit files in the workspace, and its documentation warns that auto-reload can cause changes to run before a person reviews them. Keep changes in version control and review them before relying on the result. Cursor’s own guidance says: “Always use version control so you can revert changes.” Cursor: Agent Security
Use Cursor’s .cursorignore to block agent access to selected files when appropriate, and use approval controls for sensitive-data-exposure actions. File exclusions and approvals are boundaries, not a substitute for checking what a proposed change does. Cursor: Agent Security

Do not mistake AI review for full coverage
GitHub’s Copilot code review documentation lists file types it excludes, including package.json, Gemfile.lock, logs, and SVGs. If one of those files matters to a change, inspect it yourself or use a separate repository check; a Copilot review cannot establish that every changed file was examined. GitHub: Using Copilot code review
There is no established universal instruction-file layout or quantified reduction in complexity from adding rules. Treat repository instructions as a way to communicate constraints, then rely on code review and the project’s checks to catch drift.
