Cisco’s September 25, 2025 announcement introduced three quantum-networking software research prototypes: a compiler for distributing quantum circuits, an application demo for detecting interception, and a demo for coordinating decisions across locations. They are pieces of a proposed software stack for entanglement-based networks—not evidence of commercially available products or independently validated production systems.

What Cisco announced

Cisco Quantum Labs and Outshift by Cisco presented the three offerings as a software prototype for controlling, managing and monitoring entanglement-based quantum networks. Cisco says the design is intended to work with different quantum-computing technologies, including superconducting, trapped-ion and photonic systems, and to support both quantum and classical applications. The announcement describes prototypes and demonstrations, rather than a released product lineup. Cisco’s announcement

Quantum Sync Decision coordination Application demo

What each prototype is designed to do

Quantum Compiler: split work across networked processors

Cisco describes Quantum Compiler as a network-aware compiler for distributed quantum circuits. Its software is intended to partition a circuit among processors, schedule the generation and distribution of entanglement, and facilitate quantum-state transfer between processors. Cisco also says the design supports distributed quantum error correction and is intended for heterogeneous computing technologies.

Cisco characterized it as the first compiler designed for distributed quantum computing across networked processors. That is the company’s claim, not an independently established comparison with other systems. The announcement does not supply independent performance results for the compiler.

Quantum Alert: flag attempted interception

Quantum Alert is a Cisco-described demonstration in which an attempt to intercept entangled photons changes their quantum properties and triggers an alarm. Cisco says the concept is meant to operate alongside existing encryption, including post-quantum cryptography, rather than replace it.

The announcement presents a demo, not an audited security control or a production-ready product. It does not report independent security validation or customer deployments for Quantum Alert.

Quantum Sync: coordinate decisions at different locations

Cisco describes Quantum Sync as a demonstration that uses entanglement to correlate decisions at distributed locations without sending messages between them. The announcement uses high-frequency trading as an illustrative scenario, not as evidence of a live trading deployment or a measured financial benefit.

Cisco says the demo ran on a quantum-network simulator using real protocols. The announcement reports no measured trading outcome.

How the software stack is organized

Cisco’s announced architecture has three layers. Its purpose is to connect applications to network-control software and the devices that make up a quantum network.

  • Applications: The layer for software that uses network capabilities, including the Alert and Sync demonstrations.
  • Network control: Protocols, algorithms, and northbound and southbound APIs for managing network behavior and connecting software layers.
  • Devices: An SDK, APIs for physical devices, and support for emulated and simulated devices.

Cisco’s broader research program describes its goal as a stack of hardware, software and applications for scalable, interoperable quantum networks. Its future-networking vision includes distributing entanglement to connect quantum computers and sensing devices, network switching, software-driven protocols and control, and a network digital twin. These are research goals, not a statement that the complete network is already deployed. Cisco Research’s quantum program and Quantum Networks of the Future

Where the prototypes fit in Cisco’s later quantum-networking work

On April 23, 2026, Cisco introduced the Universal Quantum Switch as a working research prototype intended to route quantum information between systems. Cisco placed it alongside the entanglement chip and compiler in a broader stack. The announcement does not establish that the switch, Quantum Compiler, Quantum Alert or Quantum Sync is commercially available. Cisco’s Universal Quantum Switch announcement

Cisco reported these proof-of-concept results for its switch prototype; they are company-reported figures, not independent benchmarks:

  • Less than 4% degradation in encoding and entanglement fidelity.
  • Switching reconfiguration in as little as 1 nanosecond.
  • Power consumption below 1 milliwatt.

Cisco said polarization encoding had been experimentally validated, while validation of time-bin and frequency-bin support was ongoing. Its announcement said full findings were expected in a forthcoming arXiv paper; it does not establish whether that paper has since appeared. The same release names IBM, Qunnect and Atom Computing as strategic collaborators in Cisco’s broader quantum-networking effort.

The 2025 software announcement also cited Cisco’s earlier entanglement chip as generating more than 200 million entangled photon pairs per second. That is a Cisco-reported chip figure, not a performance measurement of Quantum Compiler, Alert or Sync.

Availability and what the evidence supports

Cisco’s 2025 post said the Quantum Compiler prototype would be available for download at the Cisco Quantum Summit, held September 30–October 1, 2025. That dated plan does not establish current download access as of October 4, 2026. The announcement does not provide comparable download plans for Quantum Alert or Quantum Sync. Check Cisco’s own channels for current access rather than assuming the prototypes can be downloaded, bought or deployed.

For readers assessing maturity, the key distinction is between Cisco’s stated prototype capabilities and independently demonstrated outcomes. The cited announcements describe the compiler’s intended functions, two application demos, and company-reported switch results. They do not report independent trials or commercial benefits for Quantum Alert or Quantum Sync.

Bottom line

Cisco’s three software prototypes address different parts of a future quantum network: distributing computation, demonstrating an interception alert, and coordinating decisions. They show the shape of Cisco’s research software stack, but the announcements do not establish production readiness, independent validation of the application demos, or current product availability.
