A transaction groups database operations into one unit of work. In a bank transfer, for example, the database should not keep the debit while losing the matching credit if an error occurs. ACID helps protect transaction integrity, but the exact guarantees depend on the database engine, its settings, and the rules the application has defined.
What does ACID mean in databases?
ACID describes transaction properties intended to preserve data validity during concurrent activity and through errors or power failures. It is not a separate feature that automatically makes every application rule correct. A database transaction is the unit of work to which these properties apply.
Consider a transfer of $50 from one account to another. The transaction contains two operations: subtract $50 from the sender’s balance and add $50 to the recipient’s balance. Treating them as one transaction helps prevent a failed transfer from leaving the database with only one operation applied.
What are the four ACID properties?
Atomicity: all or nothing
All operations in a transaction take effect together, or none of them do. If the transfer fails after the debit but before the credit, the database should roll back the transaction rather than leave a partial transfer. The caller typically commits the unit of work when it succeeds or rolls it back after failure.

Consistency: preserve defined rules
A successful transaction must leave the database satisfying the constraints and invariants the system has actually defined and checks. For example, a declared constraint might prevent an account balance from falling below zero. Other business rules may need to be implemented in application code if they are not expressed in the database schema.
Consistency does not invent missing rules or turn incorrect logic into correct logic. If the application mistakenly transfers the wrong amount, ACID does not know what amount was intended.

Isolation: control what concurrent work can see
Isolation governs how transactions running at the same time observe one another’s work. The guarantee is not identical across all databases or settings: isolation levels determine which concurrency effects are allowed.
PostgreSQL 18 documents standard phenomena including dirty reads, nonrepeatable reads, phantom reads, and serialization anomalies. Its Read Committed level permits nonrepeatable reads, phantom reads, and serialization anomalies under the standard’s definitions. PostgreSQL’s Repeatable Read implementation also prevents phantom reads, but serialization anomalies can still occur. Serializable prohibits these phenomena under the standard’s definition. See the PostgreSQL 18 transaction isolation documentation.

Serializable does not mean concurrent transactions can never interfere with one another. PostgreSQL may abort a transaction with a serialization failure when concurrent work cannot be reconciled with a serial order. Applications using this level should be prepared to retry the entire transaction.
Durability: committed changes are meant to persist
After a database reports a transaction committed, durability means its changes are intended to survive subsequent failures. PostgreSQL’s transaction tutorial explains that updates are recorded in permanent storage before completion is reported. Read the PostgreSQL 18 transactions tutorial.

Durability is not a promise against every possible disaster, and ACID does not replace backups or recovery planning. Oracle’s MySQL 8.0 InnoDB ACID model documentation notes that durability depends on software features and hardware configuration. Relevant factors include log-flush settings, storage-device write buffers, operating-system support for fsync(), UPS protection, backups, and, for hosted deployments, network and service characteristics.
Is ACID the same as a database transaction?
No. A transaction is a group of operations treated as one unit of work; ACID describes properties that help make such a unit reliable. As PostgreSQL’s tutorial puts it, “The essential point of a transaction is that it bundles multiple steps into a single, all-or-nothing operation.” The ACID properties apply to the transaction, while implementation details determine how those properties behave in practice.

How do database implementations differ?
Do not rely on the label “ACID compliant” alone to predict what happens under concurrency or failure. Compare the specific engine and configuration, especially its supported isolation levels, default level, retry behavior, commit settings, and assumptions about hardware and recovery.
| Database documentation | Isolation details | Durability details |
|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL 18 | Read Committed, Repeatable Read, and Serializable have different anomaly guarantees; Serializable transactions can fail and require an application retry. | The tutorial says updates are recorded in permanent storage before completion is reported. |
| MySQL InnoDB, 26.7 manual | Lists four standard isolation levels and states that Repeatable Read is the default for the documented version. Weaker settings may reduce locking overhead in suitable workloads. | Configuration and environment affect durability; see the MySQL 8.0 ACID model documentation for the listed dependencies. |
These statements are version-scoped: consult the documentation for the version you run. Oracle’s MySQL 26.7 InnoDB transaction isolation documentation describes that manual’s isolation levels and default. Different isolation levels can alter concurrency behavior and performance trade-offs, so choose based on the application’s correctness requirements and workload rather than assuming one setting is best for every database.
Quick Recap
What should you check when evaluating ACID behavior?
- Rules: Which integrity constraints does the database enforce, and which business rules live only in application code?
- Isolation: Which isolation levels does the engine support, what is the default, and which concurrent anomalies can occur at the chosen level?
- Retries: Can transactions be aborted under concurrency, and can the application safely retry the whole unit of work?
- Commit configuration: Which logging and flush settings determine when a successful commit is reported?
- Failure assumptions: How do storage hardware, operating-system behavior, hosting or replication arrangements, and backup and recovery plans affect the failures you need to withstand?
