Windows Server 2008 R2 is a legacy Microsoft server operating system from the Windows Server 2008 generation. Windows Server 2008 R2 was a Microsoft Windows Server release that continued the Windows Server 2008 generation. Microsoft’s period technical overview presents it as a continuation and describes virtualization as one of its technical investment areas. That is useful historical context, not a claim about present-day suitability or performance.
It is distinct from Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, which Microsoft lists on a separate product lifecycle page. The Windows Server 2008 R2 lifecycle information below concerns the Windows Server operating system and its listed editions, not that separate product.
Which editions did Microsoft document?
Microsoft’s lifecycle page lists six Windows Server 2008 R2 editions. Its installation article identifies four as the main editions and explains that editions were intended for different server and workload needs. The sources do not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison, so an edition name alone is not enough to determine whether a particular workload was supported.

What do IIS 7.5 and Server Core mean?
IIS 7.5 for web workloads
Microsoft’s installation documentation says Windows Server 2008 R2 included Internet Information Services 7.5 (IIS 7.5). Microsoft describes IIS 7 and 7.5 as componentized and as providing management and diagnostic capabilities. This identifies the web-server role available in the release; it does not establish that an IIS 7.5 deployment is suitable or secure for exposure today.

Server Core for a minimal installation
Server Core is a minimal installation option rather than the usual full Windows interface. Microsoft says the traditional interface is not installed and configuration is performed from the command prompt. Some modules that rely on the .NET Framework or managed code cannot be installed in this mode. That means administrators need to check application and management-tool requirements before choosing it; a smaller installation does not guarantee that a particular role or workflow will work.
Is Windows Server 2008 R2 still supported?
No. Microsoft’s Lifecycle page says, “Support for this product has ended.” Its table displays January 15, 2020 as the extended-support end date, with dates presented in Pacific Time. In a post published January 16, 2020, the Microsoft Windows Server Team said Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 went out of support on January 14, 2020, and that security updates would no longer be available to those workloads. The dates reflect the sources’ distinct presentation; both place the end of support in January 2020.

Microsoft lists an Azure-only fourth year of Extended Security Updates ending January 10, 2024. That historical extension has also ended. It is not evidence of current ESU coverage.

What should an organization do if it still runs it?
Do not treat an unsupported server as a normal, covered production platform. Start by identifying what it runs and what depends on it, then plan a supported destination using current Microsoft guidance. The 2020 Microsoft post discussed Azure migration with extended security updates, upgrading to a later Windows Server version, and remaining on-premises while connecting to Azure through Windows Admin Center. Those were options described at that time, not current recommendations or confirmation that a particular path remains available. Check present-day Microsoft guidance before planning a migration.

- Contain any interim use. If the system cannot be moved immediately, assess its exposure and limit access in line with your organization’s security controls while migration is under way. Isolation reduces exposure but does not restore vendor support or security updates.
