On WordPress, you can publish it by uploading a file to your site root or by using a plugin that generates and serves it. It does not replace robots.txt or a sitemap, and publishing it does not guarantee that an AI system will read or cite your site.
What is llms.txt?
The llms.txt proposal describes a Markdown file placed at a site or content path’s root. It is meant to help a language model or other agent understand a site by providing a concise summary and links to useful material.
It serves a different purpose from other site files:
robots.txtcommunicates crawler access preferences.- A sitemap helps crawlers discover URLs across a site.
llms.txtoffers a curated, human-readable overview for an agent that chooses to consult it.
It is a proposal, not a universal requirement or established ranking signal. Project LLMs.txt’s WordPress plugin listing says: “No major search engine or LLM provider has officially announced that they seek out llms.txt files.” Publishing the file therefore cannot guarantee crawler access, AI visibility, rankings, or citations.

Choose how to publish it on WordPress

For WordPress.com, the documented manual feature is available on Business and Commerce plans, according to its support page last reviewed August 12, 2026. The page also points to SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math as alternatives, with setup instructions supplied by each plugin.
Option 1: Create and upload llms.txt manually
This is a good fit if you want direct control over the exact links and descriptions and have SFTP access to the site root.

- Choose the pages. Select public, high-value destinations such as product or service pages, About, documentation, policies, and important articles. Prefer a focused list over an exhaustive catalog.
- Write the file. In a text editor, add a site heading, a brief summary, Markdown section headings, and full URLs with short, accurate descriptions. Useful groups might include Products, Company, Documentation, and Optional.
- Upload it. Connect to the WordPress.com site with SFTP and place the file in the site root, shown as
htdocsin WordPress.com’s guide. Name it exactlyllms.txt, in lowercase. - Check the public address. Visit
https://your-domain/llms.txtin a browser and confirm the intended text appears.
For a self-hosted WordPress site, the exact hosting panel and root-directory name depend on the host. The WordPress.com SFTP path above applies to its documented setup, not every hosting provider.
Option 2: Generate it with a WordPress plugin
Plugins can automate file creation, but their installation requirements, exclusions, and serving methods are not interchangeable. Check current plugin documentation before enabling one.

Project LLMs.txt
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Project LLMs.txt, install it, and activate it.
- Review the site and content-type settings so the output includes only the material you intend to expose.
- Select Generate Now, then check the public
/llms.txtaddress.
The plugin’s listing states requirements of WordPress 6.4 or later and PHP 8.1 or later. Those are requirements for this plugin, not for every llms.txt generator. Its physical-file mode needs permission to write to the WordPress root; its Live Endpoint mode uses WordPress rewrite rules when root writing is unavailable.
Website LLMs.txt
The Website LLMs.txt documentation describes automatic generation from published content, with immediate, daily, or weekly updates. It says the plugin excludes content unavailable to anonymous visitors and can exclude pages marked noindex or nofollow by supported SEO plugins. If the generated /llms.txt URL returns a 404, its suggested fixes are to clear plugin caches or resave permalinks.

What should llms.txt contain?
Keep the file useful to someone arriving without prior context: explain briefly what the site covers, then link to the pages that best represent it. Group links by a reader-friendly topic and describe each destination accurately. Avoid adding private, access-controlled, outdated, or low-value URLs simply to make the file longer.
If a plugin builds the file automatically, inspect its content-type settings, exclusions, and output before relying on it. A generated index can include more than you intended if its scope is not reviewed.

How to verify the file after publishing
- Open the exact public root address, normally
https://your-domain/llms.txt, and confirm it loads rather than returning an error. - Check that the summary and links match the site and that each destination is current.
- Review the output for private or access-controlled content; the file should not expose material unavailable to anonymous visitors.
- If a plugin’s physical-file mode cannot write to the root, check whether it offers a live endpoint or another documented serving method.
Is llms-full.txt required?
No. Some tools offer llms-full.txt as an optional companion containing full Markdown content. LLMs.txt Curator’s documentation describes that expanded file and says llms.txt alone is sufficient. Do not treat the companion as a required part of the core proposal.
Will llms.txt improve AI visibility?
There is no established guarantee that publishing the file will improve search rankings or cause an AI product to use or cite your pages. The proposal describes an intended format; implementation depends on whether a particular crawler or model chooses to request and use it. A plugin listing likewise cautions that use does not guarantee a model will immediately use the file. Treat it as an optional, curated aid—not a substitute for making useful public content accessible and well organized.
