Yes—if your old Echo still connects to the internet and responds, it may remain useful as an Alexa speaker, Bluetooth audio device, or controller for compatible smart-home products. Some models also work in specific Fire TV home-theater setups. The exact options depend on the Echo generation and the accessories you want to use.
Start by identifying your Echo
Check the model and generation before deciding what it can do. Amazon lists Echo generations separately in its Echo identification guide. An Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus, and Echo Show are different product lines; their ports, built-in smart-home features, and compatibility are not interchangeable.
An old model appearing on Amazon’s software version page is evidence that Amazon documents software for it—not a guarantee of future updates or continued access to every Alexa feature. The UK support page lists software versions for Echo (1st Generation) and Echo (2nd Generation), and says Alexa devices update automatically when connected to the internet.
What an old Echo can still do
Play Alexa-requested audio and answer questions
Amazon describes Echo as a hands-free speaker for voice-controlled music, questions, calls, news, sports scores, and weather. Those are useful things to try if the speaker is online and responsive, but the product-family description does not guarantee that every specific service works on every generation today. Availability can depend on the model and the service.

Work as a Bluetooth speaker
You may be able to pair a phone or another Bluetooth device with the Echo for audio playback. Amazon maintains Echo Bluetooth pairing and troubleshooting instructions; follow the directions for your exact model. If pairing fails, check that Bluetooth is enabled on the other device and consult Amazon’s troubleshooting steps rather than assuming all Echo generations use the same process.
Control compatible smart-home products
An old Echo may control smart lights, plugs, or other devices when the product and Echo support a shared connection method. Amazon documents setup through compatible skills and the Alexa app, as well as certain direct connections. Check the smart-home manufacturer’s Alexa compatibility instructions and the Echo’s capabilities before buying or configuring anything. For Bluetooth smart-home devices, Amazon says to keep the device within 30 ft (9 m) during setup.

Join a supported Fire TV home-theater setup
Some Echo speakers can be paired with specific Fire TV devices for home-theater audio, but support depends on the exact combination. Check Amazon’s Fire TV home-theater compatibility guide before trying to configure it; this is not a universal feature of old Echo speakers.
Know what an older Echo may not support
Alexa+ and newer features
Eligibility for newer Alexa features varies by generation. In an Amazon staff forum response dated March 28, 2026, Amazon’s Alexa+ FAQ was cited as saying the Echo (1st Generation) continues to use original Alexa. Check Amazon’s current eligibility information for the precise model before expecting it to support Alexa+ or other newer features.

BLE-mesh device discovery
Amazon’s list of devices that support BLE-mesh discovery and setup excludes the first-generation Echo. If a smart-home product relies on that process, verify that your Echo is supported before troubleshooting setup or assuming the device is faulty.
Troubleshoot before giving up
- Confirm the model. Use Amazon’s identification guide so you can follow instructions for the right generation and product line.
- Check that it is online and responsive. Alexa devices update automatically when online, according to Amazon’s software version page. A software listing alone does not promise that a particular feature or service remains available.
- Restart it before resetting it. For a first-generation Echo, Amazon’s restart and reset instructions recommend unplugging the device for 10 seconds to restart it.
- Check compatibility for the feature that is failing. Use the relevant Bluetooth, smart-home, or Fire TV instructions and confirm that both the Echo model and the other device support the connection.
- Factory-reset only if needed. A reset erases personal information and device and smart-home connections. Follow Amazon’s model-specific instructions, and expect to set the Echo up again afterward.
Decide whether to keep, replace, or pass it on
Keep it if it completes setup, stays connected, responds reliably enough for your needs, and supports the services or accessories you actually use. Consider a replacement if a required feature or connection is unsupported, or the device cannot complete setup or remain responsive. Available support information does not establish a universal end-of-support date, remaining lifespan, or performance level for old Echoes, so those decisions depend on the individual device and your intended use.

If you pass the Echo on, deregister it or factory-reset it first so your personal information and connected settings are removed. Amazon’s reset documentation explains the reset and points owners to deregistration.
