In Morgan Ma’s example, after four pushes into a four-slot ring, both cursor residues are zero: the equality test mistakes a full lap for no data.
Why a full ring can look empty
Ma’s DEV Community article, “The Empty Check Passed on a Full Ring”, describes a ring buffer that keeps monotonically increasing read (r) and write (w) cursors, then maps them to slots with modulo four. Its faulty empty check compares the mapped positions:
empty = (w % 4) == (r % 4)Starting with both cursors at zero, four pushes advance the write cursor to four while the read cursor stays at zero. The ring has four occupied slots, but w % 4 and r % 4 are both zero. The check reports empty; the article’s illustrative program prints empty=true and then popped=0.
The underlying issue is state aliasing: modulo arithmetic discards the lap count. Equal slot positions tell you where the cursors point, but not whether they have met after zero movement or after the writer has completed a full lap. The article presents this as a logical invariant error, not as an invalid-memory-access diagnosis.

What state distinguishes empty from full?
For a sequential ring where the read cursor does not outrun the write cursor, the article uses the difference w - r as the occupancy oracle. That gives the states distinct meanings:
w - r == 0: empty.w - r == capacity: full.0 < w - r < capacity: partially occupied.
In the article’s four-slot example, four pushes produce occupancy four even though the cursor residues match. Its proposed sketch defines occupied() as w - r, defines full() by comparing occupancy with capacity, defines empty() by checking for zero, and refuses a push when full. This is an illustrative sequential approach, not a universal production fix: cursor wrap and concurrent access still require deliberate treatment.

How to reproduce and inspect the boundary
Ma recommends making the capacity small so the collision happens quickly, then comparing cursor state with the visible number of items. Use the sequence as a debugging workflow, not as a claim that a particular implementation has been tested here:
- Set the ring capacity to four or eight slots.
- Run sequentially and try push counts of
capacity - 1,capacity, andcapacity + 1. Confirm the intended behavior when a push reaches a full ring and when another push is attempted. - Record the raw read and write cursor values after every operation, along with their residues modulo capacity.
- At each boundary, compare
w - rwith the number of items that should be present. Investigate any disagreement between that occupancy and the empty/full predicates.
For the four-slot failure, the revealing state is raw cursors r = 0 and w = 4, residues 0 and 0, and expected occupancy four. Looking only at the residues hides precisely the information needed to tell full from empty.

Why memory sanitizers do not settle this question
The article distinguishes a logical state-machine bug from a memory-safety bug. A sanitizer may help find its own class of defects, but a clean run does not establish that the ring’s full and empty rules are correct. First check the sequential invariant and the cap-minus-one, cap, and cap-plus-one cases. Ma places thread testing afterward: ThreadSanitizer addresses a different failure mode, such as races, rather than proving that the sequential occupancy protocol is sound.

Ma describes the boundary tests as proposed examples, not a production incident dump. The article does not establish that the example is a concurrency solution or a proof of wait-free behavior, and it supplies no performance benchmark comparing ring-buffer designs.

The author also flags two assumptions that matter when adapting the occupancy idea: finite-width cursors can wrap during long runs, and subtraction assumes the read cursor never advances beyond the write cursor. Those conditions need to be handled by the implementation’s own invariants and synchronization model; the example alone does not resolve them.
The article discloses that it was prepared as part of MonkeyCode product outreach. Ma says free model access and a free server option were used to draft boundary tests and compile throwaway variants, while candidate outputs were compiled locally. The article warns that a remote compile is not a sanitizer run. This disclosure is not independent validation of the product or a recommendation. Ma’s concise principle for the bug is: “Cheap predicates still need an occupancy oracle.”
