This beginner walkthrough focuses on the web editor and mobile app; controls can differ between them.
Choose where to edit
Picsart offers editing on mobile, desktop, and the web. Use whichever you already have access to; you do not need to buy a new device. The steps below identify mobile-specific controls where they differ. If a button is not where this guide describes, check the live interface in your app or browser, since controls can vary by platform and app version. Picsart’s editor overview describes its available platforms and tools.
Make a first edit and save it
- Open a photo. In the editor, upload or select the image you want to work on.
- Choose one goal. Try a crop or resize, add text, or apply a filter. Picsart’s editor includes these kinds of tools, alongside other editing options.
- Review the result. Make any adjustments you want before exporting. AI enhancement is optional—not a required part of a basic edit.
- Export or save. Use the editor’s export or save control to keep the edited image.
Many editing tools are available free, while some tools and content require a subscription. The free-versus-premium boundary can change or differ by feature, so check the prompt shown in your account before relying on a particular tool. Picsart’s editor page outlines its free and premium offering.
Remove a photo background in Picsart
Background removal is useful when you want to isolate a person or object. Picsart Help Center says the tool works best when there is strong contrast between the subject and background. The removal creates a new editable layer, leaving the original image unaffected. Picsart’s Remove BG instructions cover the process.

On mobile
- Open the Picsart app and tap the plus sign to add a photo.
- Choose Remove BG.
- Inspect the cutout. For fine edges, use Erase and Restore to refine what is removed or kept.
In the web editor
- Open a photo in the web editor.
- Select Remove BG.
- Review the cutout and use the available erase or restore adjustments for edges that need correction.
Hair and other intricate outlines may need manual refinement. A clear contrast between the subject and its original background can help the tool distinguish them.
Choose a replacement background—or keep it transparent
Once the background is removed, choose an output that fits how you plan to use the image:

- Transparent: Keep the cutout without a visible background for overlays or compositing.
- Solid color: Add a simple, uniform replacement.
- Stock image: Use an available photo as the new setting.
- AI-generated scene: Describe a setting or choose a suggested prompt, then generate a background. Picsart advises using a specific prompt. See the Help Center’s AI Background instructions.
These are different options for different uses, not a ranked list of which produces the best result.
Use AI Enhance only if the photo needs it
AI Enhance is an optional tool that Picsart says can sharpen detail, address blur, and balance color. It cannot be assumed to fix every image. Picsart Help Center identifies AI Enhance as a premium feature; it says an active subscription is required to apply and save the high-resolution version. Check your account’s current access before starting. Picsart’s AI Enhance instructions list these requirements.

On mobile
- Open the photo in Picsart.
- Choose Tools, then AI Enhance.
- Wait for processing, review the result, and choose Apply if you want to keep it; then save.
On the web
- Start a new project and upload a photo.
- Select AI Enhance in the toolbar.
- Review the result and follow the available apply and save prompts.
Is Picsart suitable for a beginner?
Picsart’s official FAQ says its editor is designed for all experience levels. For a first project, keep the workflow simple: make one edit, inspect it, and save. Add background removal or enhancement only when it serves the result you want.
