Is Messenger encrypted? Meta says end-to-end encryption is the default for personal Messenger messages and calls for the vast majority of users, but it has not said that every user or every chat is covered. Check the notice in the specific conversation: an upgraded chat displays that its messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption.
Are Messenger messages end-to-end encrypted?
Meta began rolling out default end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for personal Messenger messages and calls in December 2023. In January 2025, it said the feature had reached the “vast majority” of Messenger users worldwide—not all users. Meta also says chats may be upgraded at different times. That means the best way to check is within the individual conversation, rather than assuming every Messenger chat has the same protection. Meta’s December 2023 rollout announcement, March 2024 explanation and January 2025 privacy update describe the rollout.
What does Messenger’s end-to-end encryption protect?
In an encrypted conversation, Meta says the message and call content is protected from the sender’s device until it reaches the recipient’s device. During delivery, Meta says it cannot see or hear that content. The claim applies to content in an encrypted conversation; it should not be read as a promise that all information about an interaction is hidden from Meta.
- Message content: The text and other content sent in an encrypted conversation is protected between the participating devices.
- Call content: Meta says the same protection applies to calls in that conversation.
- Content in transit: Meta says it cannot see or listen to encrypted content while it is being delivered, unless a user chooses to report a message.
Meta says Messenger’s encryption draws on the Signal Protocol and its own Labyrinth Protocol, and that it has published technical papers about its cryptography and secure storage. Those are Meta’s descriptions of its implementation, not an independent audit or evidence that Messenger is equivalent to Signal. The cited product explanations do not provide a complete current inventory of metadata visible to Meta. Meta’s technical and product explanation sets out its claims about protection and protocols.

Can Meta read my Messenger messages?
For content in an end-to-end encrypted conversation, Meta says it cannot read or listen to messages and calls as they travel between devices. There is an important exception: a participant can report a message. When someone reports content, Meta can review what was reported; Meta also says a report of an edited message can include its previous versions. Encryption therefore does not prevent a recipient from sharing conversation content with Meta through a report.
What encryption does not protect against
- A recipient sharing what they received: E2EE protects content in transit between devices; it cannot make the recipient trustworthy or stop them from disclosing content they can see.
- A compromised or accessible device: The protection described by Meta does not establish that either endpoint device is free of compromise or that nobody with access to it can see its contents.
- A recipient preserving disappearing messages: Meta describes disappearing messages as a feature of encrypted conversations, but disappearance is not a guarantee that a recipient cannot preserve or disclose content.
How to check whether a Messenger chat is encrypted
- Open the specific Messenger conversation. Check the thread itself rather than relying on the general rollout announcement.
- Look for the end-to-end encryption notice. Meta says an upgraded chat displays a notice that messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. Its explanation notes that different chats may be upgraded at different times.
If the notice is not present, the cited Meta materials do not establish that the conversation has been upgraded. Do not infer encryption for that thread from the fact that Messenger is rolling the feature out by default.

Will I lose encrypted messages if I get a new phone?
Changing devices does not by itself guarantee that encrypted history will be available on the new device. Messenger’s secure storage can preserve encrypted chat history for access from other devices. Meta describes a six-digit PIN or storing a key in Google Drive or iCloud as ways to recover or access that history. Without secure storage, messages and media may be permanently lost if the device is lost.
Be careful when deleting secure storage: Meta says doing so permanently deletes the encrypted history in that storage. Its Help Centre says Meta cannot reset the security method or restore that backup. See Messenger Help Centre’s instructions on resetting the security method for the recovery limitation.
