agevault adds directory-oriented lock and unlock commands to age, a tool that encrypts files. Its documented workflow creates a passphrase-protected identity file, uses that identity to lock a named directory, and later unlocks it. Keep the generated identity filename unchanged when following the project’s example.
What agevault does
agevault is a command-line tool for locking and unlocking directories using age. The distinction matters: age provides file encryption, while agevault supplies the directory-focused workflow around it. The project documents three commands: keygen, lock, and unlock.
How to encrypt and unlock a directory
The project’s example follows this sequence: generate an identity for the vault, lock the directory, then unlock it when needed. Consult the repository for the current command syntax and installation-specific details; the available documentation does not establish a version-specific command example here.
- Install agevault. The repository lists prebuilt binaries from its latest release, Nix, Go, and Docker as installation routes. Check the current repository and release information for platform support and exact installation instructions.
- Generate an identity. Run agevault’s
keygencommand for the directory workflow and protect the identity with a passphrase. In the project’s example, do not rename the generated identity file. - Lock the directory. Use the
lockcommand with the directory name. The project’s stated design allows a vault to be locked without entering the identity’s passphrase. - Unlock it later. Use the
unlockcommand with the directory name and enter the identity’s passphrase when prompted.
Where the key file fits in
The identity file is a separate part of the workflow: agevault’s example creates a passphrase-protected identity and then uses it to manage the directory. Preserve the generated filename when following that example. Keep the identity file and its passphrase under your control; losing access to the necessary credentials can prevent you from unlocking the vault. The repository describes the role of the identity and passphrase, but does not establish a universal storage location, backup policy, or recovery mechanism.

How age handles directory data
age’s manual describes encrypting or decrypting a single input file, not a directory as a native unit. Its README demonstrates archiving a directory and piping the archive into age. agevault’s purpose is to provide a directory-oriented lock/unlock workflow so users do not have to assemble that file-based process themselves. What the project says about its security design
agevault says it uses a passphrase-encrypted identity. The project gives three reasons for this design: possession of the encrypted identity file alone or the passphrase alone is not enough; a vault can be locked without entering the passphrase; and multiple keys could support multiple users in a future feature. The multiple-key point is a stated future possibility, not a documented current capability.

These are the project’s design explanations, not an independent security assessment. age supplies the file-encryption role, but the security of a complete setup also depends on agevault’s wrapper and operational behavior, as well as how users handle their identity file and passphrase.
Has agevault been security audited?
No formal security audit is reported by the project, and it says none is planned. The agevault README states: “This project has been tested, but has not undergone a formal security audit, and none is planned.” The project encourages users to review its code before relying on it for sensitive data. That caveat concerns agevault; it should not be confused with a claim about age’s cryptography or treated as evidence that the wrapper has been independently assessed.

The available project information does not establish a current supported-platform matrix, a release version or date, or a guarantee that every route works on every operating system.
