For most electronics purchases, don’t add an extended warranty automatically. First check the product’s included warranty and your payment card’s current benefits; then compare the service contract’s full cost and coverage with the repair risk. If you decline the plan, the Federal Trade Commission suggests setting the money aside in savings for a possible repair. A plan can still make sense when it adds clear protection against a loss you could not comfortably absorb.

What to do instead of buying the plan at checkout

  1. Read the included warranty. Find out how long it lasts, what failures it covers, what remedy the seller or manufacturer offers, and whether you would pay for shipping or service. Keep the warranty with your receipt. The FTC explains what to look for in its warranty guide.
  2. Check the exact credit card’s benefit guide. Some cards may extend a manufacturer’s warranty, but coverage depends on the card and purchase. Confirm the current terms for the card you used rather than assuming the benefit applies. Consumer Reports discusses this potential benefit in its extended-warranty guidance and laptop warranty article.
  3. Put the would-be plan cost in a repair fund. The FTC identifies a savings account as an alternative to a service contract. Keeping the money available gives you something to draw on if a repair is needed; it does not guarantee that the fund will cover every large or sudden loss.
  4. Evaluate any plan using its written terms. Buy only if it adds meaningful protection beyond what you already have, the fees and limits are understandable, and you accept how claims are handled.

This is a practical default, not a rule that every service contract is a bad deal. The FTC notes that separately sold plans can overlap with product warranties, but the available sources do not establish a current electronics-wide break-even rate.

What an extended warranty actually adds

An extended warranty or service contract is sold separately from the product’s included warranty. It may cover some of the same repairs during some of the same period, so the label “extended” does not by itself tell you when added protection starts or what it covers. Compare the actual contract with the product warranty before paying. The FTC’s guide to extended warranties and service contracts explains the distinction and recommends checking the terms before purchase.

Also consider protections that may apply without the add-on. The product’s written warranty is the place to start. Implied-warranty rules vary by state; the FTC notes that in some states they may last as long as four years, but that is not a nationwide guarantee. Check the rules that apply where you live rather than treating that duration as universal.

How to judge a service contract’s real value

Read the contract before purchase. The FTC advises that warranty terms be available to review before you buy and says to assume a repair is not covered if it is not listed. Use these questions to compare the written plan with the protection you already have.

Coverage dates and covered failures

  • When does the plan begin, and does it overlap the manufacturer’s warranty?
  • Which failures and remedies are covered? Check whether the plan repairs, replaces, or reimburses, and whether it sets a maximum reimbursement.
  • Are accidental damage, wear, batteries, cosmetic damage, software, data loss, pre-existing faults, or required maintenance addressed? These are examples to check in the specific contract, not universal exclusions.

Total cost and fees

  • Add the plan price to any deductible, service or diagnostic fee, shipping expense, or other charge you may owe per claim.
  • Compare that total and any reimbursement cap with a plausible repair or replacement cost. A low checkout price can still offer little value if fees or limits reduce what you can recover.

Claims and repair process

  • Identify the company administering the contract and how to submit a claim.
  • Check where repairs happen, whether you must ship the device, what records or proof are required, and how reimbursement works.
  • Consider whether the process and provider are clear enough that you would actually use the plan.

These are contract-specific checks, not claims that every plan has the same exclusions, fees, or process. A service contract may be worth considering if its written coverage addresses a consequential risk that existing protections do not, and its cost, limits, and claim process are acceptable to you.

When to decline—and when to consider paying

Decline the add-on when it largely duplicates the included warranty, excludes the failure you most want covered, has fees or limits that undermine its value, or leaves the claims process unclear. Consider it when the added protection is specific and meaningful, the provider and process are understandable, and paying for a major repair yourself would be difficult. Your ability to absorb a loss matters: a repair fund may be practical for one buyer but inadequate for another facing a large expense.

Warranty terms and your ability to repair

Read the warranty’s repair requirements and keep a copy. In July 2024, FTC staff said the agency sent warning letters to eight companies over practices it said could interfere with consumers’ ability to get products repaired. The release discussed concerns including requirements to use specified parts or service providers and certain “warranty void if removed” stickers. It records that warning-letter context; it is not a general ruling on every warranty or repair dispute. FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said at the time, “These warning letters put companies on notice that restricting consumers’ right to repair violates the law,” and added that the Commission would continue efforts to protect consumers’ repair rights and independent dealers’ ability to compete. Read the FTC’s July 2024 release for the agency’s description of the warnings.
