To benchmark a Ryzen VDS reliably, run fixed CPU and storage workloads several times, record the full guest and test configuration, and report the spread and latency distribution—not just the best score. A guest-side benchmark measures what the virtual machine experienced during that run; without host telemetry, it cannot establish the physical CPU, placement, scheduler policy, storage hardware, or the cause of a slowdown.
What a Ryzen VDS benchmark can—and cannot—tell you
A benchmark is an observation of a particular guest environment under a particular workload. Its result is meaningful only alongside the settings that produced it: workload, duration, concurrency, software version, and relevant system configuration. The fio 3.42 documentation provides controls for timed runs, ramp time, latency distributions, and CPU reporting that help make storage results more interpretable.
Guest-only measurements do not reveal the whole host. For example, Linux’s documentation on the AMD Hardware Feedback Interface describes host/platform capability information that the kernel or a userspace policy daemon can use for task placement. That is not proof that a guest can inspect where its vCPUs run. Likewise, the amd-pstate driver documentation describes CPU performance scaling support, not a guest control or diagnostic interface for the provider’s frequency policy.
- A changing score could reflect scheduling, co-tenancy, frequency behavior, thermal or power policy, virtual CPU placement, background guest work, or measurement noise.
- Those are possible explanations, not diagnoses you can confirm from a guest score alone.
- A short run describes only its measurement interval; it does not establish sustained performance, an SLA, or behavior at other times.
Record the environment before testing
Capture enough detail that you—or someone else—can repeat the same test and understand what changed. Keep the test path and file size consistent across repeats.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Provider and plan name, region, and test date and time.
- Guest operating system and kernel version; reported CPU model and topology; allocated vCPUs and memory.
- Provider’s public wording about CPU allocation, copied exactly and labeled as provider-stated information.
- Filesystem, mount options, test path, and whether the test uses a file or a raw device.
- fio version and the complete command or job file for every storage test.
A displayed CPU model or provider label is not independent verification of the physical host. Run file-based tests in a disposable file or directory on the filesystem you intend to assess. Avoid destructive raw-device tests on a rented instance unless the device is explicitly disposable and you understand the risk of data loss. The fio documentation describes a configurable workload tool; it does not prescribe one universal command for every VDS.
Benchmark CPU performance separately
Keep the workload fixed
Choose a CPU workload that fits your real question, then keep its implementation, duration, and worker-thread count unchanged between runs. Record the exact command or source code, compiler or runtime version where applicable, number of threads, and guest-visible CPU affinity. Run it multiple times under otherwise unchanged conditions, retaining every result rather than selecting the fastest.

Separate idle and contention runs
Start with a light-load baseline. If you want to see how the guest behaves under contention, run a separate, clearly labeled concurrent-load test. Do not blend the two conditions into one score: they answer different questions. If scores vary, report the variation and avoid claiming that the guest has identified the host-level cause.
Design storage tests around distinct questions
Storage throughput, IOPS, and latency are not interchangeable scores. Use separate fio jobs for separate questions—for example, sequential throughput, random-I/O latency at low queue depth, and IOPS under higher concurrency. Do not combine them into an overall winner unless you explain the workload weighting.

For each job, disclose the settings that determine what it measures:
- fio version and complete job file or command;
- target path, filesystem, file size or working set, and whether the test is file-based;
- read/write pattern and mix, block size, I/O engine, direct-I/O setting, queue depth, and job count;
- ramp-up and measurement duration;
- bandwidth or IOPS, completion-latency percentiles, and run-to-run spread;
- whether the guest was otherwise idle or was tested with a separately specified concurrent workload.
AMD’s EPYC 9005 Tuning Guide illustrates why setup details such as CPU assignment, core type, memory bandwidth, and job concurrency can matter in server NVMe testing. Its system and results are specific to the guide’s EPYC test setup; they are not a recipe or expected-performance baseline for an unspecified Ryzen VDS. The same qualification applies to AMD’s EPYC 9004 Tuning Guide.

Interpret cache and fio output carefully
Direct I/O is a setting to report, not a guarantee that every cache or virtualization effect has disappeared. Explain the setting used and identify the guest filesystem and virtual disk path; the behavior of a particular provider’s storage stack is not established by the guest setting alone.
Choose output metrics that match the job. The fio documentation describes completion-latency distributions and CPU reporting that includes user and system time, context switches, and page faults. These can help characterize the workload and benchmark overhead, but do not expose host-wide CPU placement or provider-side contention telemetry. Fio also states, “For file and directory operation engines, bw is meaningless.” That statement is specifically about those engines; it does not mean bandwidth is meaningless for block-storage tests.

Repeat runs and report the results honestly
- Run each defined workload more than once, preserving the individual outputs.
- When using ramp time, separate the ramp interval from the measured interval in your report.
- List each run or summarize the median and spread; do not publish only the best run or an average without variation.
- Note whether results changed materially across time or between idle and separately labeled concurrent-load conditions.
A timed fio run is an observation over that interval, not proof of long-term capacity. Repeating the same workload helps show whether results are consistent, but does not turn a guest measurement into an SLA or explain a change’s host-side cause.
Compare VDS runs without inventing a winner
For a comparison, hold the guest OS, tool version, workload, file size, and procedure constant as far as practical. Identify any differences you could not control, such as region or provider-stated CPU allocation. Compare results on separate, useful axes:
- CPU performance under the identical fixed workload;
- low-queue-depth storage latency distribution;
- throughput or IOPS at the stated concurrency;
- variation across repeat runs and separately labeled load conditions;
- what each provider discloses about vCPU allocation, storage, and region.
There is no generalizable Ryzen VDS score in the cited materials, and AMD’s EPYC tuning-guide results describe specific server systems rather than a population of Ryzen virtual servers. Without current plan details and like-for-like tests, a ranked provider comparison or expected-score table would be misleading.
