For U.S. buyers comparing Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, the PS5 Digital Edition costs $50 less. It is the better fit if you buy games digitally and do not need disc playback. Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you own or expect to buy PS5 or PS4 game discs, want compatible movie-disc playback, or prefer having both buying options.
PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition: the key differences
The main practical difference is the optical disc drive. The standard PS5 includes one; the Digital Edition does not. Sony says performance is identical apart from the drive, so the disc model is not a faster gaming console. The current CFI-21XX manual does, however, list different nominal SSD capacities.

The prices are Sony’s U.S. recommended retail prices, not live quotes; retailer pricing, bundles and inventory can differ. Sony’s announcement lists U.K. RRPs of £569.99 and £519.99, Europe RRPs of €649.99 and €599.99, and Japan RRPs of ¥97,980 and ¥89,980, respectively. The storage figures are nominal installed capacities, not the amount guaranteed to be available for games; the system reserves some storage for its own use. Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual lists the capacities and hardware specifications.

Which PS5 should you buy?
Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you buy games digitally
If you get games from PlayStation Store or access them through subscriptions and do not need physical media, the Digital Edition saves $50 at the cited U.S. RRPs. Digital games are obtained through PlayStation Store or game subscriptions. A subscription does not mean every included game becomes permanently owned; access depends on the applicable service and its terms.
Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you own or want physical games
The drive-equipped PS5 plays PS5 game discs and compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs. If your PS4 library includes discs, the Digital Edition cannot use them as sold. Sony’s 2020 FAQ said more than 99% of 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on either PS5 model; that is Sony’s launch-era statement, not a current independent compatibility audit. Choose the disc model if you want movie-disc playback
Sony lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD support for a PS5 with a disc drive. The Digital Edition, as sold without a drive, cannot play those discs. Sony’s PS5 FAQ describes the drive as the distinction between the models; its current CFI-21XX manual is relevant for the newer model’s storage difference.
Can you add a disc drive to PS5 Digital Edition?
Some current no-drive PS5 models support a separately sold Sony disc drive. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual gives directions for attaching and removing a drive. That does not establish that every older Digital Edition accepts the same accessory: check the console’s exact CFI model and Sony’s current compatibility guidance before buying a drive. If you are comparing a Digital Edition plus an add-on drive with the standard PS5, compare the total price of the console and compatible drive—not just the console’s lower starting price. Also weigh the different nominal SSD capacities.
Does Sony’s 2028 disc announcement change the decision?
Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting in January 2028. Sony said the change does not affect games already released, or games releasing before January 2028, in disc format. Verdict: which is the better buy?
The Digital Edition is the value pick for a committed digital buyer who does not need a disc drive. The standard PS5 is the safer all-options choice if you own physical PS4 or PS5 games, want disc-based movies, or are not sure you will stay digital. The $50 U.S. MSRP gap is the starting comparison; your own needs for discs, storage and any compatible add-on drive determine which offers better value.
