Adaptive mode automatically blends Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency, adjusting how much outside sound you hear as your surroundings change. It gives you a middle ground between blocking noise and letting the world in, and you can tune it to allow more or less ambient sound.
What Adaptive mode does
Apple describes Adaptive as a mode that “blends Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode together to control the level of noise you hear in your headphones based on the changing noise conditions in your environment.” In practice, it adjusts the balance between reducing outside sound and letting it through rather than requiring you to choose only Noise Cancellation or Transparency.
The balance is adjustable: while Adaptive is active, AirPods settings include a control for allowing more or less ambient noise. The exact control label and location can vary with the connected device and its software.
How it differs from other AirPods modes

Adaptive Audio is the broader feature set. Adaptive mode is not the same as Conversation Awareness: the latter responds to your speaking, while Adaptive changes the noise-control balance in response to your surroundings. Conversation Awareness is a separate setting.

Which AirPods support Adaptive Audio
Apple lists these models as supporting Adaptive Audio: AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2. If Adaptive does not appear in your listening-mode choices, first check the exact AirPods model; the feature is not available on every AirPods model.
Apple’s support information does not establish a single minimum software release for every listed model or guarantee identical controls on every non-Apple device. Check the current AirPods settings on the device connected to your headphones.

How to turn on Adaptive mode
- On iPhone or iPad: Connect your supported AirPods, open Control Center, press and hold the volume control, choose Listening Mode, then select Adaptive.
- On Mac: Open Control Center, choose Sound, select your AirPods, then choose Adaptive.
- To adjust how much outside sound comes through: With Adaptive enabled, open the AirPods settings on your connected device and adjust the ambient-noise control. Its exact location and wording depend on the device and software version.
Apple says AirPods settings carry over when the AirPods switch among your devices. Menu labels and available controls can still vary by model and operating-system version, so use the current controls shown for your connected AirPods.

Adaptive is useful when you want the AirPods to manage the balance as environmental noise changes, rather than manually switching between Noise Cancellation and Transparency. You can also choose either of those modes directly, or another mode available for your model. There is no single mode that is best for every listener or situation.
