Potentially, but not by making every iPhone battery a simple do-it-yourself part. EU rules already applying to covered phones set battery-replacement and spare-part requirements, while a separate Batteries Regulation rule requiring portable batteries to be removable and replaceable by end-users applies from 18 February 2027. The result depends on the regulation, the phone model and the compliance route used.
What the EU rules mean for iPhone batteries
There are two relevant sets of rules, and they should not be treated as one universal design mandate. The general Batteries Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, says that portable batteries incorporated in products placed on the EU market must be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user during the product’s lifetime, subject to exceptions. That obligation applies from 18 February 2027. It concerns the whole battery, not individual cells. Read Article 11 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.
Smartphones are also covered by separate ecodesign rules in Regulation (EU) 2023/1670, which apply from 20 June 2025. Those requirements allow more than one way for a phone to meet the battery-replacement criteria. Will you be able to replace an iPhone battery yourself?
Possibly, depending on the model and the compliance route it uses. The smartphone ecodesign rules include a route under which a layman can replace the battery in a use environment, using no tools, tools supplied with the product, or basic tools. They also provide an alternative route based on more demanding repair-process criteria and applicable battery-durability requirements. These are regulatory options, not a promise that every covered phone will use the same construction.

For batteries subject to Article 11 of the Batteries Regulation, “readily removable” is tied to the tools and process needed for removal. The regulation rules out requirements for specialized tools unless supplied free with the product, proprietary tools, thermal energy or solvents. Manufacturers must also provide instructions and safety information, with that information permanently available online. These provisions do not establish that an existing iPhone will be redesigned or that every repair will be suitable for an inexperienced owner.

The two dates matter: the phone-specific ecodesign requirements have applied since 2025, while the general end-user removability rule begins in 2027.

Does this apply to every iPhone, including older models?
No blanket conclusion follows from these regulations. Their requirements concern covered products placed on the EU market, and how the smartphone ecodesign provisions apply is model-specific. The rules do not establish that every iPhone model will get the same battery design, nor do they say that existing phones must all be redesigned. They also do not mean that a battery must be a snap-out component: the phone ecodesign routes allow different approaches to replacement.
Will replacement batteries and repair information be available?
Both sets of rules address access to repair or replacement. The Batteries Regulation separately requires covered batteries to be available as spare parts for at least five years after the last unit of a model is placed on the market. Smartphone ecodesign requirements also address the availability of batteries as spare parts. The Commission’s guidance describes the interaction of those provisions for relevant phones and tablets. This is a regulatory availability requirement, not evidence that a particular battery is currently in stock or that a specific repair provider serves your location.

Are there exceptions to the end-user replacement rule?
Yes. Article 11 provides exceptions for certain products where battery removal and replacement may be performed by independent professionals. It also provides an exception where a permanent battery connection is necessary for continuity of power, safety or data integrity in products whose main function is data collection and supply. The Commission can add further exceptions by delegated act.
A Commission document dated 14 July 2026, C(2026)5031, proposes additional categories, including some wearable devices and specified safety-sensitive categories. Its text says it enters into force on the twentieth day after publication in the Official Journal.
