AVIF support is not documented for the AI Builder image and document workflows covered by Microsoft’s current format lists. The accepted formats differ by feature: prompt inputs list PNG, JPG, JPEG, and PDF; object-detection training lists JPG, PNG, and BMP; and the preview image-description model lists JPG, JPEG, PNG, and BMP. Convert an AVIF image to a format accepted by the specific workflow, then check that workflow’s size and dimension limits.
Can AI Builder upload AVIF images?
Microsoft’s documentation does not include AVIF in the accepted-format lists for the prompt input, object-detection training, image-description, or document-processing paths described here. That means direct AVIF support is not documented for these features; it does not establish a platform-wide rule for every AI Builder model, connector, or future release. AI Builder contains distinct workflows with distinct input requirements, so check the list for the action you plan to use.

Which formats and limits apply to each workflow?

How do you convert an AVIF image for AI Builder?
- Identify the workflow. Decide whether the image will be passed to a prompt, used to train an object-detection model, sent to the image-description model, or used in document processing.
- Export to a listed format. Choose a type accepted by that workflow. PNG or JPEG is a practical choice where listed; for document processing, PDF is also listed. Use an image editor or converter you trust; Microsoft’s format documentation does not endorse a particular third-party converter.
- Check the converted file’s limits. Confirm the file-size and, where applicable, pixel-dimension requirements in the table before uploading or passing it to the model.
- Retry with the converted file. If it still fails, verify that the selected AI Builder feature accepts the chosen format and that the file is within that feature’s limits. For prompt inputs, check the combined size of all files against the total limit.
Why do AI Builder upload requirements differ?
These limits apply to different operations: a prompt consumes input files, object detection uses images to train a custom model, image description is a prebuilt model, and document processing has separate training and flow requirements. A format or size limit listed for one operation should not be treated as a rule for another. In particular, document-processing support for a file type does not add that type to the prompt input list.
