To install an APK, open the file on your Android device, allow the app that opened it to install apps if prompted, then review and confirm Android’s installer prompt. Whether it succeeds depends on the APK and your device—not just on granting permission. Check the file’s source before proceeding: the install prompt does not certify that an APK is safe.
What happens when you install an APK?
An APK is an Android application package file. A developer may distribute one through a website or send it directly to a user. When you open the file on your phone or tablet, Android starts the system installation flow. The app that opened the file—such as a browser or file manager—acts as the installation source, and Android may require you to authorize that source first.
Android’s package installer checks the package against the device and may ask you to confirm the installation. The process can succeed, require further user action, or fail because of a compatibility, package, policy, verification, or storage issue. A source permission lets an app request an installation; it is not a general approval of every APK that app opens. Android’s alternative distribution guidance describes the opt-in model, while the PackageInstaller API reference documents installation results and failure categories.
How to install an APK on Android
- Obtain the APK from a source you trust. Prefer the app developer or a distribution channel you have independently verified. Check that the app name and publisher are the ones you expect.
- Open the APK on your device. Tap the downloaded file in your browser’s downloads list or open it from a file manager. The exact labels and screens vary by Android version and device maker.
- Allow installation for the source app if Android asks. On Android 8.0 and later, the prompt or settings link applies to the app you used to open the APK. If you arrived in Settings, enable permission for that source app, then return to the installation flow.
- Review Android’s installer screen. Confirm the app shown is the one you intended to install. If the source, app identity, or requested access seems unexpected, cancel rather than proceeding.
- Confirm the installation. Wait for Android to report success or show an error. If it fails, use the specific error and the troubleshooting section below; granting source permission does not fix package incompatibility or other installation failures.
- Revoke the source permission when you no longer need it. You can change the setting later. Restricting it again reduces the chance of an unintended install request from that source.
Why Android says you can’t install unknown apps
Android uses an opt-in because installation from outside trusted app stores can be inadvertent. The setting controls whether a particular source app may request an installation; it does not verify the APK’s publisher, contents, or behavior.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Android 8.0 (API 26) and later
Allow the app opening the APK—not every app on the device—to install apps. Android calls the relevant settings screen “Install unknown apps.” If you downloaded the file in a browser, authorize that browser; if you opened it from a file manager, authorize that file manager. You can later change the permission for that source.
Android 7.1.1 (API 25) and earlier
Older Android versions use the device-wide “Unknown sources” setting, traditionally found under Settings > Security, or may show a one-time approval for a particular installation. Device makers can arrange or label these controls differently, so follow the prompt on your device rather than assuming every phone has the same menu.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Why an APK may not install
If Android already lets the source request an installation, the remaining problem may have nothing to do with unknown-app permission. Android documents several distinct failure categories; the exact wording can vary by device and installer.
| Error or condition | What it can mean | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid package | The APK may be malformed, corrupted, incorrectly signed, or not the intended package. | Remove the questionable download and obtain the intended file again from the publisher. Do not treat a repeated failure as a reason to bypass system checks. |
| Blocked | A device policy, package verifier, or system protection may have blocked installation. | Read the device’s full message and check whether the device is managed or a protection feature has intervened. Do not try to evade a policy block. |
| Package conflict | An installed package may conflict with the APK, including because the signing certificates are incompatible. | Check that the APK comes from the app’s legitimate publisher and is intended for the installed app. Avoid replacing an installed app with a file from an unrelated source. |
| Incompatible app | The device may lack a required hardware feature, the APK’s native code may not support its processor ABI, or the app may require a newer Android SDK. | Check the app’s device and Android-version requirements and obtain a build intended for your device. |
| Android 15 target-SDK restriction | Android 15 refuses new installations of apps targeting below API 24. | Look for a current build from the publisher. Apps already installed when a device upgrades to Android 15 remain installed; this restriction concerns new installations. See Android 15’s all-app behavior changes. |
| Storage or media problem | There may not be enough available space, or external media may be unavailable. | Check available device storage and whether the file or destination media can be accessed. |
| Confirmation pending or declined | The installation may need user confirmation, or a confirmation step may have been declined or abandoned. | Return to the installer flow and respond to its prompt if you still intend to install the app. |
Android’s installer also documents an important architecture nuance: beginning with Android 14 (API 34), a device that supports both 64-bit and 32-bit ABIs can install an app containing only 32-bit native code, though Android displays a warning when the app launches. That warning is not, by itself, the same as an installation failure. The documented categories are diagnostic clues rather than a complete explanation of every manufacturer-specific message; consult the exact error shown on your device. PackageInstaller’s API reference describes these result categories.

Is it safe to install an APK?
There is no general safety verdict in Android’s installation prompt. The prompt means Android is asking you to authorize or confirm an installation; it does not mean Android has certified the file as trustworthy. Android’s distribution documentation explains the opt-in boundary, not a blanket safety guarantee for manually installed APKs.
- Get the file from the app developer or a distribution channel you have independently verified.
- Check that the app name and publisher match what you intended to obtain.
- Stop if the source is unexpected, the identity does not match, or the access requested seems out of place.
- After installation, remove the source app’s install permission if you no longer need it.
These checks reduce avoidable risk but cannot guarantee that an APK is safe: visual inspection alone cannot establish everything a file will do. Conversely, APK files are not inherently malicious; their trustworthiness depends on the particular file and its source.

Marketplace installation versus getting an APK directly
| Route | Who distributes the app | Install-source permission | Services and verification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trusted app marketplace | The marketplace distributes the app through its own app and policies. | The separate unknown-app source permission described above is for installation from outside trusted first-party stores; marketplace flows are distinct. | Marketplace services may provide features such as Google Play in-app billing and app licensing. Those services are not provided by website distribution. |
| APK from a website or other direct source | The developer or other distributor provides the package directly, such as through a website or by sending it to the user. | Android requires user opt-in for an outside source; on Android 8.0 and later this permission is specific to the app opening the APK. | Google’s developer guidance notes that website distribution does not provide Google Play in-app billing or app licensing services. Assess the source and publisher yourself; the installer prompt is not a safety certification. |
Android’s alternative distribution guidance explains website distribution and the source opt-in. The right route depends on where the publisher makes the app available and which distribution services it uses; a direct APK is not automatically unsafe, and a successful installation is not proof of safety.
