When a WebSocket delivers updates faster than a React screen needs to show them, collect messages and publish a batch at most once per animation frame. This requestAnimationFrame (rAF) pattern can reduce redundant UI publications, but it does not slow incoming traffic, guarantee one React render per frame, or make every workload faster.

What rAF buffering changes—and what it does not

A WebSocket message handler runs when data arrives. Several messages may arrive between display repaints, so publishing each one to React-facing state can create work for intermediate values the screen never meaningfully displays. Buffering separates those two rhythms: the handler records or merges incoming data, and one scheduled animation-frame callback publishes a snapshot before a repaint. See the WebSocket API and requestAnimationFrame documentation.

rAF is a one-shot browser scheduling request, generally paced to the display’s refresh rate; it is not a timer that guarantees a fixed interval. React decides how to process updates, so one publication does not promise exactly one component render or one completed paint. The cost depends on the update path, component tree, and work triggered by the new data. React’s rules do not establish a render-count guarantee for this pattern.

Most browsers pause rAF in background tabs and hidden iframes. A queue that waits for an animation frame can therefore grow or remain unflushed while a page is hidden unless the application has a separate policy.

Choose what the buffer is allowed to preserve

The right buffer operation depends on what a message means. Decide this before optimizing the scheduler; a fast UI that silently loses important events is incorrect.

Replaceable values: coalesce to the newest state

For values such as a current sensor reading, cursor position, or status keyed by entity, intermediate updates may be obsolete as soon as a newer one arrives. Keep only the latest value for each key, then publish the resulting snapshot. This limits retained work when messages are frequent, while accepting that the UI will not display every intermediate value.

Required events: preserve order and content

Chat messages, audit records, and transactions are usually events, not replaceable snapshots. Append them in order and publish a batch without dropping required entries. If arrivals outpace processing, rAF alone cannot solve the overload: use an explicit bounded-queue policy, pagination or server-side flow control, as appropriate to the product’s correctness requirements.

Set a queue limit and overload policy

Animation-frame batching controls publication cadence, not incoming message volume or memory use. Define a queue limit and what happens when it is reached. Depending on the data contract, options include coalescing replaceable values, dropping with a visible indication, disconnecting, or requesting a fresh snapshot. A lossless stream needs a retention and recovery plan rather than silent truncation.

Plan for hidden pages

Because browsers commonly pause rAF in hidden pages, decide whether to retain and coalesce data while hidden, stop or reduce upstream delivery, or refresh from a snapshot when the page becomes visible. For a lossless feed, retention must be handled independently of the visual flush schedule.

Implement one pending frame and publish an immutable snapshot

The following is an implementation shape assembled from the documented browser and React APIs, not a benchmarked code sample from React or MDN. Use refs for mutable scheduler bookkeeping and buffers; a ref change does not itself request a React render. Publish visible data through state or a store that React subscribes to.

  1. Set up the connection in an effect. Create or obtain the socket and register its message listener in useEffect. Cleanup should detach the listener and close the socket only if this component owns the connection. See React useEffect.
  2. Keep the buffer and frame ID outside displayed state. Store the mutable queue or keyed latest-value map, plus the pending rAF identifier, in refs or an external store. A ref is suitable for bookkeeping that should not itself trigger rendering; React documents that changing a ref does not trigger a re-render in useRef.
  3. Validate and buffer each message. In the socket listener, parse and validate the payload, then append it or merge it according to the event semantics above. If a frame callback is already pending, leave it alone; otherwise request one with requestAnimationFrame.
  4. Drain once in the callback. Clear the pending frame identifier, take a stable snapshot of the buffered data, and reset or update the buffer. Publish that snapshot once through React state or notify the subscribed store. The snapshot should be immutable from the consumer’s perspective.
  5. Clean up on teardown. Cancel any pending animation frame, remove the message listener, close an owned socket, and release retained buffer references. If the connection is shared, do not close it merely because one subscriber unmounted.

A minimal scheduler has this shape; the buffer operation and publication function must match your application’s data semantics:

let frameId = null;
const pending = [];

function onMessage(event) {
  const message = validateAndParse(event.data);
  pending.push(message); // Replace with keyed coalescing if values are replaceable.

  if (frameId !== null) return;
  frameId = requestAnimationFrame(() => {
    frameId = null;
    const batch = pending.splice(0, pending.length);
    if (batch.length) publishSnapshot(batch);
  });
}

function cleanup() {
  if (frameId !== null) cancelAnimationFrame(frameId);
  frameId = null;
  pending.length = 0;
  socket.removeEventListener("message", onMessage);
  // Close the socket here only if this code owns it.
}

In React, keep the listener and cleanup tied to the effect lifecycle so setup and teardown use the same handler. If the socket or publication function changes, make the effect’s dependencies reflect that lifecycle rather than registering duplicate listeners.

When an external store is a better fit

If many components consume the same live data, an external store can own the buffer and publish snapshots to subscribers rather than lifting every update through a component. With useSyncExternalStore, keep the subscribe function stable, have it return an unsubscribe function, and return a cached immutable snapshot until the store’s data changes. Returning a newly allocated snapshot on every read can make change detection unreliable or cause repeated work. React explains these requirements in useSyncExternalStore.

How this compares with other update strategies

Strategy Publication cadence Useful when Overload and lifecycle considerations
Publish on every message Once per delivered message Each event must be reflected immediately and the arrival rate is manageable. Can trigger more UI-facing updates than the display can show; still requires a plan for excessive input.
rAF buffering At most one scheduled flush per pending animation frame The UI should track visual updates near repaint cadence and intermediate values can be batched or coalesced. Does not apply network backpressure; browser pausing in hidden pages requires a separate policy.
Fixed-interval batching At a chosen timer interval A deliberate cadence independent of display repaint timing is acceptable. Can add latency or run out of sync with painting; choose explicit queue limits and hidden-page behavior.
WebSocketStream Stream-based processing with backpressure in its design You can target environments that support it and need stream backpressure. MDN describes it as non-standard with limited engine support, so it is not a universally available substitute. See the WebSocket API overview.

Standard WebSocket does not provide backpressure: buffering at the UI boundary cannot regulate the rate at which data arrives. If the consumer cannot keep up, the application needs an overload strategy at another layer. A change in visual cadence is not a flow-control mechanism.

Measure the work before claiming a speedup

MDN’s browser-rendering guide gives under 16.67 ms as an example budget for styles, reflow, and paint to support smooth animation. It is a general rendering target, not a result for React/WebSocket buffering. The official documentation cited here gives no comparative throughput, CPU, memory, or React render-count result for this exact pattern.

Profile representative message rates and devices. Separate time spent parsing and validating messages, updating the buffer, notifying the store, rendering React components, and performing layout and paint. Compare the same workload and correctness requirements across strategies, and watch queue size and latency as well as CPU. That tells you whether publication frequency is actually the bottleneck—and whether batching shifts cost into a growing queue.
