Start with three keys: press Windows to open Start, Windows+I to open Settings, and Windows+E to open File Explorer. From there, you can find apps and files, make the desktop more comfortable, protect the PC, and decide what to back up. Windows 11 labels and available features can vary by update, device, region, or organization policy; if a menu looks different, search for the setting in Settings.
Find your way around Windows 11
The centered taskbar and Start menu may feel unfamiliar if you are coming from an earlier Windows version or another operating system. These first steps cover the quickest ways to reach apps, controls, and files. For Microsoft’s overview of the desktop and navigation, see Meet Windows 11: The Basics.
1. Open Start with the Windows key
Press the Windows-logo key on your keyboard, or select the Start button on the taskbar. Start gives you access to apps, settings, and files, including items you have pinned. It is a useful first stop when you are unsure where to go.
2. Search from Start
Open Start and begin typing the name of an app, file, or setting. Select a result to open it. Searching is often faster than browsing through menus, especially when you know what you want but not where Windows keeps it.

3. Pin frequently used apps
To keep an app close at hand, search for it in Start, right-click its result, and choose Pin to Start if that option is available. You can also pin apps to the taskbar for one-click access. Pin only the items you use often; the arrangement is personal, not a required setup.
4. Group related pins into folders
In Start’s pinned area, drag one app pin onto another to create a folder, then give the group a useful name if prompted. A folder can keep related tools together—for example, work apps or creative apps—without filling the pinned area with individual icons.
5. Adjust the taskbar to suit you
Right-click an empty part of the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings. Use the available controls to adjust alignment and choose which taskbar items appear. The precise options may vary with the Windows version. Microsoft’s instructions for pins, folders, and alignment are in Customize the Windows Start Menu.
Make common controls easier to reach
6. Open Settings with Windows+I
Settings is the main place to change how Windows and connected devices work. Press Windows+I, or open Start and select Settings. Categories include System, Bluetooth & devices, Personalization, Apps, Accounts, Accessibility, Privacy & security, and Windows Update. Microsoft’s guide describes the app as “a centralized hub to manage and customize device preferences.” Read Exploring Windows Settings for an overview.

7. Search Settings when a control is hard to find
Use the search field inside Settings and enter the name of the feature you want, such as “display,” “printer,” or “notifications.” Menu organization and labels can change between Windows updates, so Settings search is a practical fallback when a path in a guide does not match your screen.
8. Use Quick Settings for everyday toggles
Select the network, volume, or battery area on the right side of the taskbar to open Quick Settings. Depending on your device, this panel may offer controls such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, volume, and display brightness. Select a control to change it; what appears depends on the hardware and available Windows features.
Work with files and multiple windows
9. Open File Explorer with Windows+E
Press Windows+E to open File Explorer. Use its navigation pane to browse folders and drives, or select a location such as Documents or Downloads. This is the main built-in place to view and manage files stored on the PC.
10. Create folders and handle files deliberately
In File Explorer, open the location where you want a folder, select New and then Folder, and give it a descriptive name. To organize an existing file, select it and use the toolbar or right-click menu to copy, move, rename, or delete it. Before deleting, check that you have selected the right item; deleting the wrong file can remove work you still need.

11. Search File Explorer by file name
Open the folder or drive where you expect the file to be, then type a name or part of a name into File Explorer’s search box. If you do not know the exact name, try a distinctive word from it. Starting in the likely folder can make it easier to narrow the results.
12. Put two windows side by side with Snap
Drag a window to the left or right edge of the screen until the Snap outline appears, then release it. Select another open window to fill the remaining space. This is handy when comparing a webpage with a document or following instructions while working in another app.
13. Try a different Snap layout for more room
Hover over a window’s maximize button to see available Snap layouts, or use the Snap controls available on your device. Choose a layout and select which open apps should fill its spaces. Layout choices depend on screen size and current Windows behavior. Microsoft explains layouts, Snap Assist, and Snap Groups in Snap Your Windows; it describes Snap as a way to “quickly resize and position application windows for efficient multitasking.”
Use shortcuts and accessibility features
14. Learn a small set of keyboard shortcuts
Start with these three: Windows opens Start, Windows+I opens Settings, and Windows+E opens File Explorer. You can use them alongside the mouse or touchscreen rather than trying to memorize a long list. Microsoft’s broader reference is Keyboard shortcuts in Windows.

15. Explore accessibility controls for comfort
Open Settings > Accessibility and browse the options for vision, hearing, interaction, and focus. Depending on what you need, adjustments may make text easier to read, audio easier to follow, or input more manageable. These features can help anyone tailor the computer to their preferences, not only people with a diagnosed disability. Availability varies by device and Windows version. See Microsoft’s Discover Windows accessibility features.
16. Review app permissions when privacy matters
Go to Settings > Privacy & security and look for permissions such as location, camera, or microphone. Review which apps can use a permission and change access if appropriate. Options and controls can differ by app, device, and policy; changing a permission may prevent an app feature from working.

17. Know where to find a quick security scan
Open Windows Security from Start and select Virus & threat protection. Choose Quick scan to check common locations for threats. Windows Security includes built-in protections such as Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows Firewall. Microsoft’s Stay protected with the Windows Security app explains its tools. A quick scan is not the same as a guarantee that every possible threat has been found.
18. Get apps from trusted sources and keep them updated
Download software from sources you trust, such as the software maker’s official site or an app store, and install updates for Windows, browsers, and apps. Avoid disabling built-in protections as a routine way to speed up a PC. Microsoft outlines safer software practices in Protect your PC from unwanted software.

19. Check Windows Update and follow restart prompts
Open Settings > Windows Update to check for available updates and review their status. Some updates require a restart to finish installing, so save your work before restarting when prompted. Security intelligence updates are delivered through Windows Update; Microsoft also documents a manual check in Windows Security under Virus & threat protection. See Virus and Threat Protection in the Windows Security App.
Choose what Windows backs up
20. Review Windows Backup’s folder and settings choices
Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup to review the available backup options. Windows Backup can let you choose folders such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music for OneDrive backup, and can back up selected settings and preferences. Folder selection determines what is included; this is not a complete image backup of the PC, and it does not automatically mean every file is covered.
Some options require signing in to a Microsoft account and having sufficient OneDrive storage available. Before relying on backup, check which folders and settings are selected and where their copies are stored. Microsoft’s explanation of scope and restore options is at Back up and restore with Windows Backup.
