If the Windows 11 Widgets panel will not open, first check whether its taskbar button is simply hidden. If the panel opens but cards or Discover content do not load, check Windows component updates and Microsoft Edge instead. Work through these seven checks in order; they are diagnostic steps, not a guaranteed fix for every cause.
First, identify what is not working
A missing taskbar button is different from a panel that will not launch. Likewise, a panel that opens with blank or stale cards points to a different problem than an unexpected Discover feed. Use the check that matches your symptom rather than treating every content issue as an access problem.
- Button missing: Check taskbar visibility.
- Panel will not open: Try the keyboard shortcut.
- Panel opens, but cards or Discover fail: Check Windows app updates and Edge.
- Content is unexpected or changes: Review the Discover context below; personalization is not the same as a launch failure.
1. Turn on the Widgets taskbar button
Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings. Under Taskbar items, turn on Widgets. Microsoft documents this setting for showing or hiding the taskbar entry: Stay up to date with Widgets in Windows and Customize the Taskbar in Windows.
If the button was hidden, this restores the taskbar access point; it does not establish whether a separate panel or content issue is also present.

2. Open Widgets with the keyboard shortcut
Press Windows key+W. You can also open the board from the taskbar Widgets area; on supported devices, swiping in from the side of the screen may open it. These alternate access methods are documented by Microsoft Support.
If Windows key+W opens the board while the taskbar button is absent, focus on taskbar visibility or access behavior. If the shortcut does not open it either, continue with the update checks.

3. Update Windows Web Experience Pack
Microsoft says Widgets and Discover need current versions of both Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App to work as expected. To check the pack:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find Windows Web Experience Pack and select Update if that option is shown.

4. Check for a Start Experiences App update
The same Microsoft guidance says the Start Experiences App also needs to be current for Widgets and Discover to work as expected. Check Microsoft Store’s available app updates and install an update if one is offered. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not provide a separate, specific listing sequence for this app, so its appearance or exact route may vary.
5. Make sure Microsoft Store app updates are enabled
Microsoft Store normally updates Windows Web Experience Pack in the background. If updates appear stuck, open Microsoft Store settings and confirm App updates is on. This allows Store app updates to happen automatically; it does not guarantee that a particular update is available or resolve every Widgets problem.

6. Check Microsoft Edge for feed or widget problems
Some widgets and the News Feed depend on Microsoft Edge. Microsoft says Edge-backed widgets stop working if Edge is uninstalled, and recommends keeping Edge installed and updated. If the board launches but a relevant widget or feed content fails, check Edge rather than removing it as a troubleshooting step. See Apps and widgets that depend on Microsoft Edge.

Widgets behavior can differ by Windows release. Microsoft’s June 23, 2026 preview release notes describe Widgets changes for OS builds 26200.8737 and 26100.8737; those build-specific notes are not a general repair instruction, and the preview is not a recommended fix for every PC. Check Windows Update for applicable updates, then note your Windows version and build. If the issue remains, tell Microsoft Support whether the board fails to open or opens with content problems; that distinction helps describe the failure clearly.
If Widgets opens but Discover looks wrong
A feed that differs from what you expect is not necessarily a panel malfunction. Microsoft says the display language and Country or region affect Discover content by default, and the feed changes as new items meet personalization settings. Review those settings if the board works but Discover content is unexpected; this is separate from repairing a panel that will not launch.
