You can query Google through SerpApi from Java without its SDK: send an HTTP GET request with engine=google, your search query, and an API key, then read the JSON response. The example below uses Java’s built-in HTTP client and the Gson JSON library; it is intentionally a short starting point, not a verified 15-line implementation.
What the request does
SerpApi accepts Google search parameters over HTTP and returns structured results. A request has this general shape:
https://serpapi.com/search.json?engine=google&q=Java+HTTP+client&api_key=YOUR_API_KEY
Replace the query and key with your own values. The endpoint returns JSON; a successful response can include an organic_results array, along with other fields. See SerpApi’s Google Search API page for its endpoint example and current parameters.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prerequisites and API key
- Use a Java runtime that includes
java.net.http.HttpClient(Java 11 or later). - Create a SerpApi account and obtain an API key using the official Java integration guide.
- Add Gson to your project to parse JSON. This example uses the library’s
JsonParser; it does not use SerpApi’s SDK.
Set the key in the SERPAPI_KEY environment variable rather than embedding it in source code. SerpApi’s Java repository likewise recommends using an environment variable instead of committing a key.
Make a search with Java’s HTTP client
The code builds and encodes the query string, sends a GET request, checks the HTTP status, then parses and prints the first organic result if one exists. Add Gson to your project through your usual dependency manager before compiling.

public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
String key = System.getenv("SERPAPI_KEY");
if (key == null || key.isBlank()) throw new IllegalStateException("Set SERPAPI_KEY");
String q = URLEncoder.encode("Java HTTP client", StandardCharsets.UTF_8);
String apiKey = URLEncoder.encode(key, StandardCharsets.UTF_8);
URI uri = URI.create("https://serpapi.com/search.json?engine=google&q=" + q + "&api_key=" + apiKey);
HttpRequest request = HttpRequest.newBuilder(uri).GET().build();
HttpResponse<String> response = HttpClient.newHttpClient().send(request, HttpResponse.BodyHandlers.ofString());
if (response.statusCode() < 200 || response.statusCode() >= 300)
throw new IllegalStateException("SerpApi returned HTTP " + response.statusCode() + ": " + response.body());
JsonObject json = JsonParser.parseString(response.body()).getAsJsonObject();
JsonArray results = json.has("organic_results") && json.get("organic_results").isJsonArray()
? json.getAsJsonArray("organic_results") : new JsonArray();
if (results.isEmpty()) {
System.out.println("No organic results returned.");
} else {

System.out.println(first.has("link") ? first.get("link").getAsString() : "Result has no link");
}
}
}
The code reports non-2xx HTTP responses with the response body, which can help diagnose a rejected request. It also handles an absent or empty organic_results array and checks for missing title or link fields. For a production application, consider separating transport, parsing, and error reporting, and handling network exceptions and malformed JSON in ways appropriate to your application.
Adjust the search
Change the value passed to URLEncoder.encode to search for a different phrase. The endpoint’s parameters also support controls such as language, location, and Google domain; parameter names and available options depend on the API. Consult SerpApi’s current parameter documentation before adding them. URL-encode parameter values when building the request, especially values containing spaces or punctuation.

Direct HTTP or the official Java SDK?
Direct HTTP avoids a vendor SDK dependency and gives you control over request construction and JSON parsing, but you own that plumbing and its error handling. SerpApi’s Java integration page documents its official SDK as an alternative. The SDK repository describes Gson-backed structured results and Markdown and raw-HTML accessors, as well as async search and other API methods. Its documented Gradle example uses com.github.serpapi:serpapi-java:1.2.0; the repository says its current branch is built and tested with JDK 21 and releases target Java 21. Check the current docs for version and runtime compatibility before adopting it. The separate google-search-results-java repository is a legacy wrapper; do not treat its dependency instructions as instructions for the current SDK.
Account limits and pricing
SerpApi’s product page displayed a free plan with 250 searches per month when accessed in 2026, alongside paid monthly examples: Starter at $25 for 1,000 searches, Developer at $75 for 5,000, Production at $150 for 15,000, and Big Data at $275 for 30,000.
