1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse dagster-otel when you want to add OpenTelemetry tracing to selected Dagster definitions while keeping their native @op and @asset decorators. Its explicit @traced() decorator sits beneath Dagster’s decorator, so the approach does not require monkeypatching Dagster internals. If you want zero-code, automatic instrumentation instead, a separate launcher package is available—but it uses framework patching.
Choose explicit tracing or automatic instrumentation
| Approach | What you change | Dagster decorators and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
dagster-otel explicit instrumentation |
Add @traced() to each selected definition and configure OpenTelemetry export. |
Keeps @op and @asset in place without monkeypatching; requires editing the definitions you want traced. Project page |
opentelemetry-instrumentation-dagster launcher |
Install the package, configure OpenTelemetry environment variables, and prefix the Dagster command with opentelemetry-instrument. |
Definitions need no changes, but automatic coverage is achieved by patching the framework. The project page classifies it as Alpha. Project page |
For the title’s specific requirement—tracing without monkeypatching or giving up Dagster’s decorators—the explicit dagster-otel route is the direct fit. The launcher is a different trade-off, not a way to get zero-code coverage without patching.
Add @traced() while retaining Dagster decorators
Place Dagster’s decorator outside @traced(). The resulting definition remains a Dagster op or asset, while the tracing decorator wraps the function Dagster receives. This abbreviated pattern illustrates decorator placement; consult the current package README for supported arguments and exporter configuration.
from dagster import asset, op
from dagster_otel import traced
@op
@traced()
def upstream_op(context) -> int:
...
@asset
@traced()
def downstream_asset(context):
...
The package author describes the first traced step in a run as the trace root and says trace context is propagated through Dagster run storage when steps execute in separate processes. Those are maintainer claims; deployment behavior should be checked against the package’s documented executor guidance rather than assumed from the decorator example.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When the launcher approach is a better fit
The separate opentelemetry-instrumentation-dagster package targets automatic instrumentation without changing definitions. Its PyPI page, checked September 22, 2026, lists version 0.2.0, Python 3.10 or later, Dagster 1.5 or later, and Alpha development status. The page says the package has not been independently version-matrix-tested beyond the coverage of dagster-otel; treat its compatibility details as project-stated and verify them for your environment.
Documented quick-start shape
- Install
opentelemetry-instrumentation-dagsterin the environment used to run Dagster. - Start an OTLP-compatible receiver, such as the local Jaeger instance in the package’s example.
- Set
OTEL_SERVICE_NAMEandOTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINTfor the process. The package says an endpoint—or a traces-specific endpoint—is needed for a real exporter to attach. Its documented default protocol isgrpc;http/protobufis another option. - Run the Dagster entry point with the instrumentation prefix, for example
opentelemetry-instrument dagster dev. The package describes the prefix as usable withdagster job execute,dagster-webserver,dagster-daemon, and other Dagster entry points. Use the exact command appropriate to your deployment.
Set OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true if you need to disable export, as documented by the package. Check its current setup instructions for the exact environment and command details.

Coverage and stated gaps
@op,@asset, and@multi_assetare listed as covered, including bare and named forms of@opand@asset.@asset_checkis listed as covered whendagster-otel0.4.0 or later is used. The project reports a realmaterialize()check, but says it has not independently re-verified this under multiprocess or Kubernetes execution.@dbt_assetsis covered through its use ofmulti_asset, with one span per dbt run. The project says end-to-end verification against a real dbt project remained outstanding.@graph_assetis deliberately excluded because, according to the package, its decorated function does not receive runtime context. The project says tracing the ops it composes covers executed work.
Account for separate processes and Kubernetes pods
Instrumentation must be present wherever traced work actually runs. The launcher’s maintainers report that its instrumentation is inherited by fresh Python subprocesses under Dagster’s multiprocess executor and say they verified it with a real run. For k8s_job_executor, each step runs in a separate pod, so prefixing a command in a different process does not by itself instrument those pods. The package recommends baking instrumentation into the image; its example is copying OpenTelemetry’s sitecustomize.py into the environment’s site-packages. The project reports testing this on a real kind cluster. These are maintainer-reported checks, not independent compatibility tests.
Dagster-native context and other approaches
Dagster documents assets built with @asset and describes the platform as a data orchestrator with integrated lineage and observability. A request for a globally available OpenTelemetry telemetry provider, analogous to the default logger, was opened on December 16, 2022; the accessed issue page remains open and shows no assignee, milestone, or linked development. That status applies to this specific feature request, not to every Dagster version or third-party tracing option. Dagster feature request

A December 2025 community discussion demonstrates another resource-and-decorator pattern: constructing a SpanContext from the Dagster run ID. Its later note reports a local test on Dagster 1.11.16 covering decorator forms and resource setup with a local span stub. It did not verify Logfire export or multiprocess propagation, so it is an example of decorator mechanics rather than evidence of a complete production tracing design. Community discussion
