Desktop users generally sign in to a Malwarebytes account and verify by email; mobile users either sign in or restore the purchase through Google Play or Apple’s App Store. Existing license keys must be linked to an account before desktop activation, while an MB Code can activate another device.
Before you install
- Check Malwarebytes’ current system requirements and any regional restrictions for the product you plan to use.
- Know where your subscription was purchased: Malwarebytes’ online store, Google Play, or Apple’s App Store. The purchase channel determines how you activate or restore it.
- For the standard desktop activation flow, have access to the email address on your Malwarebytes account so you can enter the verification code.
The app must be installed before you activate the app or VPN. Some Malwarebytes products, including Identity Theft Protection and Personal Data Remover, are account-based rather than app installations. See Malwarebytes’ product installation overview for the distinction. If you do not have an account, follow Malwarebytes’ account setup guidance.
Install and activate Malwarebytes on Windows
- Download the Windows installer from Malwarebytes’ official download page, or install the app from the Microsoft Store.
- Open MBsetup.exe. Approve the installer if Windows asks, select Install, and choose Personal when prompted.
- When installation finishes, open Malwarebytes and select Activate now.
- Sign in to the Malwarebytes account associated with your subscription.
- Retrieve the verification code sent to your email, enter it in the app, and continue to the dashboard.
If the installer or activation displays an error, note the exact error message or code before contacting Malwarebytes support. The vendor’s Windows and Mac Quick Start Guide has the illustrated first-install steps.
Install and activate Malwarebytes on Mac
- Download the Mac installer from Malwarebytes’ official download page, then open the downloaded installer from Downloads.
- Follow the installer through Introduction and Read Me, review and accept the license agreement, and confirm installation.
- When prompted, authenticate with your Mac username and password or Touch ID.
- Open Malwarebytes, sign in to your account, and enter the email verification code.
- Grant Full Disk Access and any other requested permissions to finish setup. Follow the prompts shown by the app and macOS.
Permission prompts are part of completing Mac setup; signing in alone may not finish configuration. The official Quick Start Guide covers the installer flow.

Activate an app that is already installed
On Windows or Mac, open Malwarebytes and go to My subscription. Open the menu on the subscription card, select Activate subscription, then choose Sign in. Sign in to the associated Malwarebytes account and complete email verification. These are the desktop steps in Malwarebytes’ subscription activation instructions.
Activate on Android or iPhone
- Install Malwarebytes from Google Play or the Apple App Store, then open the app.
- Go to Settings > My Subscriptions.
- Choose the option matching your purchase channel:
- Malwarebytes online-store subscription: On Android, select I have a subscription; on iOS, select Already have a Subscription, then sign in to your Malwarebytes account.
- Google Play subscription: On Android, choose Restore Google Play purchase.
- Apple App Store subscription: On iOS, choose Restore purchase.
- After activation or restoration succeeds, check My Subscriptions for the subscription type and expiration date.
If a store purchase does not restore, use the recovery guidance linked from Malwarebytes’ Android and iOS activation article for the relevant store.

Link an existing license key or key and ID
If you already have a Malwarebytes license key, or a key and ID, link it to a Malwarebytes account before using the current desktop sign-in activation flow. Then activate the app by signing in as described above. Follow the account-linking directions in Malwarebytes’ subscription activation instructions; do not treat the old key as a substitute for completing account activation.
Activate another device with an MB Code
An MB Code lets you use an available device slot on your subscription to activate another device. Generate one either from your Malwarebytes account or from an already activated mobile app.

Generate a code from your Malwarebytes account
- Sign in to your Malwarebytes account and choose Share with another device or person.
- Select Send Invitation, then Create code.
- Choose the new device type and generate the code.
Generate a code from an activated phone or tablet
- In the activated Android or iOS app, open Settings > My Subscriptions.
- Select Generate MB code.
Enter the code in the new device’s activation flow. Each MB Code works once and expires after 90 seconds. If it expires or has already been used, generate a fresh one. The account must have an available device slot. See Malwarebytes’ MB Code instructions.
Choose the activation route that matches your purchase

What if I only want to scan for malware?
Malwarebytes describes its free mobile app as allowing scans, while some other features require a paid subscription. Its product page distinguishes free cleanup from paid ongoing protection; those are Malwarebytes’ descriptions, not an independent assessment of protection effectiveness. Check the current Malwarebytes Premium product page and the app’s subscription screen for the features available to your edition and region.
