Permetra is an announced open-source project intended to help answer a difficult Supabase security question: Who can access what in your application, and why? Project author Oussama Larhnimi describes an interactive graph for exploring access relationships, but says the first version is still being built. The announcement does not establish a public release, repository, license, or working detection coverage.
What Permetra aims to do
In an announcement dated September 20, 2026, Larhnimi describes Permetra as a security tool for making Supabase access relationships easier to inspect. His concern is that relevant facts can be spread across users, roles, tenants, database grants, tables, functions, and Row Level Security (RLS) policies, obscuring the overall picture. He proposes a BloodHound-inspired interactive graph to explore how those pieces connect. Read the announcement by Oussama Larhnimi.
The author lists these goals:
- Visualize users, roles, tenants, tables, policies, and permissions.
- Explain why a user can access a particular resource.
- Help reveal unexpected access paths and review tenant isolation and authorization.
- Make Supabase security relationships easier to understand.
These are proposed capabilities, not verified features. Larhnimi writes, “I’m still building the first version and would love feedback from Supabase developers, security engineers, and open-source contributors.” His request for ideas about which detections to build first indicates that detection priorities were still being solicited; it does not show that any specific detector exists.
Why Supabase access is more than a list of roles
An access graph would need to distinguish several layers that answer different questions. Database permissions, application-level row policies, API credentials, and Supabase Dashboard membership are related, but they are not interchangeable.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Postgres roles and grants
Postgres roles and grants define database-level permissions. Grants can apply to objects such as tables, views, functions, and triggers, and roles can inherit permissions from parent roles. Supabase recommends RLS for application access and describes role-based access control as something that can be implemented on top of RLS. Its built-in roles include anon for unauthenticated API access, authenticated for signed-in access, and service_role for elevated API access that bypasses RLS. The authenticator role validates a JWT and switches into a role selected through JWT verification. Supabase’s Postgres Roles documentation explains these database concepts.
RLS and signed-in identity
RLS policies determine which rows a database role can access under the conditions defined by the policy. A role label alone therefore does not explain every outcome: the policy and the identity or claims available to it matter too. Supabase distinguishes the application component making a request from the human user signed in through Supabase Auth. An access explanation would need to make those distinctions visible rather than treating “user,” “role,” and “key” as synonyms.

API keys and privileged paths
Supabase says API keys identify what is accessing a project, while Auth identifies who is accessing it when signed in. Publishable keys are low privilege and intended for public application components. Secret keys are elevated, intended for backend components with their own authorization checks, and bypass RLS. Supabase also lists the legacy anon and service_role keys. These elevated routes are important to account for when assessing access: a review limited to user-facing RLS policies could miss a privileged backend path. See Supabase’s API keys guidance.
Organization and project membership
Supabase platform membership is a separate access-control dimension from permissions inside an application’s database. Supabase lists Owner, Administrator, Developer, and Read-Only organization or project roles. Read-Only and project-scoped roles are available on Team and Enterprise plans. Organization-scoped roles apply across current and future projects, whereas project-scoped members are limited to assigned projects and cannot see other projects in the Dashboard. These roles govern platform access; they are not Postgres roles or RLS policies. Details are in Supabase’s Access Control documentation.

Management API token scope
Supabase personal access tokens can grant read or read-write access to specified resource classes. A Management API request fails when its token lacks the required permission; for example, the permissions needed for supabase link differ from those needed for database commands. Token scope would matter when evaluating an integration that reads project configuration, but the Permetra announcement does not say that the project uses these tokens. Consult Supabase’s Personal Access Tokens guide.
What to verify before treating Permetra as a usable tool
The announcement presents a project concept and an early build, not evidence of a released product. It does not establish a public repository, license, implementation details, test results, or current detection coverage. Nor does it specify what credential Permetra would need, what data it would collect, or how it would protect elevated secrets. Those details should be checked before connecting any real Supabase project.

For a future integration, useful questions include which configuration sources it reads, whether an access-path explanation is backed by inspectable evidence, whether findings are validated against runtime behavior, what credential scope and secret-handling practices it uses, how it is deployed, and whether it is actively maintained. These are evaluation questions, not features confirmed for Permetra.

Larhnimi’s announcement invites feedback from Supabase developers, security engineers, and open-source contributors, and asks which detections readers would want first. Readers interested in helping can respond through the project announcement. Because the first version is still under construction, treat descriptions of the graph and its goals as plans until a release and its capabilities are documented.
