DockFlare lets you describe Docker services with labels and use them to manage Cloudflare Tunnel ingress, DNS, and Access rules—so adding or removing a container can update its route without repeating every step in Cloudflare’s dashboard. It is a self-hosted controller, not a replacement for Cloudflare Tunnel: you still need a Cloudflare account, a domain on Cloudflare, an internet-connected host, and a running DockFlare deployment.

How DockFlare manages Docker services

DockFlare watches Docker container events, reads labels on containers you designate for management, and uses the Cloudflare API to apply matching tunnel, DNS, and Access changes. Its dashboard can also manage rules and exceptions. For repeatable container deployments, labels hold the route configuration; for non-Docker services or exceptions, the UI provides a manual path.

When a managed container stops or is removed, DockFlare documents cleanup of its corresponding ingress and related DNS and Access resources if no other service still uses that hostname. Cleanup can have a configured grace period, so removal should not be assumed to happen instantly.

What you need before setting it up

  • A Cloudflare account and a domain on Cloudflare.
  • A Docker host or VM with internet access where Cloudflare Tunnel can run. Cloudflare’s Tunnel setup guide, updated September 30, 2026, lists these as prerequisites and advises checking access to port 7844 if a restrictive firewall is in place.
  • A DockFlare deployment and Cloudflare credentials configured through its setup wizard. The DockFlare Docker Compose quick start walks through setting a UI password, entering Cloudflare account credentials, and configuring an initial tunnel. Its guide lists Tunnel edit and DNS edit permissions for API setup; required permissions can vary with the operations you use, so treat that as the guide’s setup direction rather than a universal minimum-token recipe.

DockFlare is software, not a hardware appliance. An existing suitable server or VM is enough; a mini PC is simply one possible host if you do not already have one.

How to define a route with Docker labels

A basic managed route needs three labels: enable DockFlare management, set the public hostname, and specify the service URL DockFlare should send traffic to. For example:

labels:
  - "dockflare.enable=true"
  - "dockflare.hostname=app.example.com"
  - "dockflare.service=http://my-app:80"

Here, app.example.com is the public hostname and http://my-app:80 is the origin address reachable from the relevant Docker network. Use the current dockflare. label prefix for new configurations. The container labels reference documents optional labels for URL paths, zone overrides, origin TLS verification, and the Host header.

Access settings and multiple routes

Access labels can select public bypass or authentication behavior and configure identity providers or session duration. A container can also define more than one route with indexed labels such as dockflare.0.* and dockflare.1.*; consult the label reference for the exact fields supported by the version you deploy.

DockFlare’s release history notes that the default prefix changed from cloudflare.tunnel. to dockflare.. Existing Compose files using the older prefix are documented as continuing to work, but new examples should use dockflare.. Check the release history for version-specific changes.

What the current Compose setup changes

The current Docker Compose guide uses a socket proxy between DockFlare and Docker, along with supporting services including Redis. It says direct mounting of /var/run/docker.sock is no longer supported in this deployment, so older instructions that tell you to mount the raw socket should not be copied into this setup. Follow the guide for its data-directory permissions and host UID/GID behavior rather than assuming a default that fits every host.

Because DockFlare needs Docker visibility and Cloudflare API credentials, it adds another service to operate and secure. The socket proxy is part of the documented deployment design; it does not eliminate the need to manage DockFlare’s credentials, network access, updates, and backups.

When to use the dashboard instead of labels

The web UI is useful when a route is not backed by a Docker container or when an operator needs an exception to the label-defined configuration. DockFlare’s dashboard lists managed ingress rules, hostnames, internal services, their source (Docker or manual), status, and access mode. It also supports editing a route created from labels; while that UI override is active, the UI change takes precedence until you revert it and let labels control the route again.

  • Use labels for container routes that should be repeatable with the service definition.
  • Use a manual UI rule for a service outside Docker.
  • Use an override for a one-off change, then revert it when the label-defined settings should apply again.

The UI also supports reusable Access groups, wildcard zone policies, and backup and restore. DockFlare’s web UI documentation recommends zone defaults as a safety net against accidentally unprotected subdomains; that is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular deployment is secure. The same documentation warns that disabling password login can expose the API to other containers on the same Docker network, so follow the current setup guidance before changing authentication settings.

What DockFlare does—and does not—replace

DockFlare automates parts of the Cloudflare configuration workflow; it does not remove the need for Cloudflare Tunnel or a reachable origin. Compared with clicking through Cloudflare’s dashboard for each service, its main distinction is that desired route configuration can live alongside a Docker container’s labels, with UI rules available for exceptions.

If you are evaluating it against manual configuration or another ingress manager, check where desired state lives, how routes and associated DNS or Access policies are created and cleaned up, whether non-Docker or multi-host services fit your setup, how Docker access and API credentials are handled, and how overrides, backup, and recovery work. Those details determine whether the reduction in repetitive dashboard work is worth operating another controller.
