But a change in your results is worth investigating: Gemini models and product routing change, and a new model, prompt, setting, or answer style can feel like a decline. “Dumber” is not a standardized measure. To establish model drift, you need to compare performance on the same tasks over time using a consistent method.
What does “model drift” mean?
Model drift is a measured change in a model’s output quality or behavior over time on a defined set of tasks. It is not simply the impression that a few recent answers were worse. A useful comparison holds the test cases, prompts, settings, scoring rubric, and model identity or version constant wherever possible.
Google’s July 31, 2026 announcement about evaluations in Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform emphasizes consistent scoring between local experiments and live traffic: “When you use consistent quality scoring on local experiments and live traffic, a drift in production points to a problem with the agent rather than with the way it was measured.” That guidance concerns measurement in that platform; it does not establish whether the consumer Gemini app has or has not drifted. Why might Gemini feel different?
The model or routing may have changed
Google’s Gemini API release notes record dated releases and updates. For example, the page notes that Gemini 3.5 Flash became generally available on May 19, 2026, and became the model behind the gemini-flash-latest alias. An alias that follows the latest model can therefore refer to a different model over time. That is a reason comparisons across dates may not be like-for-like—not evidence that quality declined.

Google’s Gemini deprecation schedule lists lifecycle dates and suggested replacements. Deprecation means support is scheduled to end and the model will later be shut down; a replacement may complicate comparisons across dates, but a lifecycle change alone does not demonstrate a decline.
In the consumer app, you may not be able to identify the exact model that produced a particular response. If there is no stable model identifier available to you, you cannot confidently claim that the same backend model got worse.

Your task, prompt, or settings may differ
A model can perform unevenly across writing, coding, reasoning, image understanding, and other tasks. A changed prompt, setting, or available tool can also alter the result. One disappointing answer is a useful signal to check, but it cannot establish a system-wide regression.
Answer length can change the experience
In a September 2024 announcement, Google reported that some updated Gemini models produced default outputs roughly 5–20% shorter than prior models for certain use cases. A shorter response may feel less thorough even if performance on a particular benchmark or task measure improves. This is a plausible explanation for a changed impression, not proof of what caused any one person’s experience. Google Developers Blog

What do published Gemini benchmarks show?
Benchmarks answer bounded questions about particular model versions and test sets. They do not directly measure every person’s open-ended experience in the Gemini app. Vendor-reported improvements are evidence about the comparisons the vendor describes, not independent proof of broad quality trends.

Google’s original Gemini paper describes the model family and its multimodal evaluations. It is useful historical background, not a measure of current app quality.

You can investigate a recurring problem without treating a handful of examples as proof. For a meaningful comparison:

- Define the task. Record the kind of work you care about, such as summarizing a fixed passage or solving a particular class of coding problem. Evaluate separate task categories rather than relying on one catch-all “smartness” score.
- Keep test cases and prompts fixed. Use the same inputs and instructions in each comparison. Note any changes in settings or tool access.
- Record model identity when available. Compare a model against itself to test for drift. If comparing versions, label that as a version comparison. If the app does not disclose a stable model identifier, state that limitation rather than guessing which model served the answer.
- Score with the same rubric. Decide in advance what counts as correct, useful, complete, or a failure, and apply those criteria consistently to old and new outputs.
- Look for a pattern across tasks. Sort failures by category and examine repeated examples. A decline confined to one task is different from a consistent decline across the tasks you tested.
This approach can make a personal comparison more informative, but it does not turn an informal test into a representative study of all Gemini users.
So, is Gemini getting dumber?
The reviewed sources do not establish a general decline in Gemini’s quality, nor do they prove that quality has remained unchanged. Google documents frequent releases and model lifecycle changes, publishes results for specific model-and-benchmark comparisons, and recommends consistent evaluation to detect drift. Those facts make version and measurement differences important to check; they do not settle whether the experience has worsened for everyone.
