There is no single best Linux app format. Choose Flatpak for repository-managed desktop apps with shared runtimes and sandbox permissions, Snap for apps managed by snapd with automatic refreshes by default, or AppImage when you want to download and run a standalone file without a conventional installation. The right choice depends on the app’s availability, your distribution, and how you want updates and desktop access handled.

How the three formats differ

Decision point Flatpak Snap AppImage
How you get an app Install from a configured remote; required runtimes can be installed as dependencies. Install and manage through snapd. Download an application file, make it executable, and run it.
Dependencies Apps use runtimes for basic dependencies; multiple runtime versions can coexist, and apps may bundle additional libraries. Uses a self-contained package model; snapd can install dependencies alongside an app. Distributed as a standalone image; exact packaging depends on the publisher.
Updates Managed through Flatpak remotes and commands such as flatpak update. Automatic refreshes are the default; snapd settings can schedule or hold updates. The cited AppImage documentation does not establish a universal update mechanism. Optional management tools are available.
Isolation and access Apps run in sandboxes; permissions and portals can mediate access to selected host resources. Confinement is the default absent custom flags or interface connections. Interfaces control access beyond confinement, and portals can provide specific access such as a file chooser. The cited documentation establishes execution and optional integration, not an equivalent default sandbox model.
Desktop integration Apps can export desktop files and icons; portals support interaction with the host. GUI apps can integrate with the desktop and use portals for specific access. Runs directly; optional helper tools can add launcher entries and management features.
Management model Managed installation, with per-user or system-wide options. Centralized management by snapd, with configurable refresh behavior. A file-based approach suited to keeping and launching a standalone image.

Choose Flatpak for repository-managed desktop apps

Flatpak installs applications from configured remotes, such as Flathub, and can install the runtime an app needs. Runtimes provide a base set of dependencies, and multiple runtime versions can exist side by side. That model can reduce the need for each app to carry every common dependency, though applications may still include extra libraries.

Flatpak apps run in sandboxes. Permissions determine what an app can access, while portals let it request selected access through user-facing mechanisms—for example, choosing a file rather than granting broad access to files on the host. These mechanisms provide controls, but they do not by themselves establish that every Flatpak package is trustworthy or perfectly isolated.

Install an app from a configured remote with flatpak install; update installed apps and runtimes with flatpak update. The official Flatpak usage documentation describes these commands and workflows. Flatpak is a sensible choice if you prefer repository-based management, shared runtime handling, and explicit sandbox permissions, and the app is available from a remote you trust.

Choose Snap if snapd-managed updates suit you

Snap packages are installed and managed by the snapd daemon, which handles installation, confinement, and updates. Automatic refresh is the default; snapd settings let users schedule refreshes or hold them. See the Snap refresh documentation for the available controls.

Snaps use confinement and interfaces to govern access to resources outside the app’s confinement. Portals can provide a standard way to request certain access, such as opening a file chooser. This is a different mechanism from Flatpak’s runtime-and-remote model, even though both formats include sandbox-related controls. Snap’s confinement documentation and interfaces documentation explain the relevant concepts.

Snap can be a good fit if your distribution supports snapd and you are comfortable with its managed lifecycle and default automatic refreshes, or want to configure when refreshes happen. Snapcraft describes support across distributions and platforms, but that does not mean every distribution enables Snap by default or that every app is offered as a Snap. Check the Snapcraft documentation and your distribution’s support information.

Choose AppImage for a standalone file

An AppImage is an application file you can download, mark executable, and run without a conventional package installation. The project’s quickstart describes that workflow. This can be convenient if you want to keep an app as a file and launch it directly.

AppImage does not imply one universal update workflow: the cited documentation does not establish that every AppImage self-updates or that none can update. Publishers and optional management helpers may handle updates or integration differently. You may also need a helper tool if you want a launcher entry or a more managed desktop experience. The documentation cited here does not establish an AppImage sandbox equivalent to Flatpak’s or Snap’s default confinement mechanisms.

Check these points before installing

  • App availability: Check the application publisher’s page to see which formats it actually offers, and whether the build is maintained.
  • Distribution support: Verify that your Linux distribution supports the format and that any required service or tooling is available.
  • Publisher and version: Confirm who supplies the package and which app version it contains; the format alone does not certify package quality or trustworthiness.
  • Permissions: Review the access an app requests and the controls your chosen format and desktop provide.
  • Update handling: Decide whether you want Flatpak’s remote-based updates, Snap’s automatic refresh default with configurable timing, or the app-specific approach used for an AppImage.
  • Integration: Consider whether you need desktop launchers and icons or prefer to run a standalone file directly.

What the formats do not tell you

Project documentation explains the intended mechanisms and workflows; it does not provide a head-to-head security audit, a package-by-package quality assessment, or comparative measurements of speed, resource use, and disk footprint. Do not assume one format is universally faster, lighter, or more secure. Package quality and maintenance depend on the specific app and publisher, and available formats vary by application and distribution. Flatpak’s documentation describes distribution-agnostic runtimes, while the Flathub about page describes Flathub as community-run; neither fact is a guarantee about an individual package.
